Dannii Minogue discussions

i have to agree... sadly. there are most definitely parts in the book where she doesn't give the full story, you can just tell she's hiding the while truth in the way it's written.

maybe we've seen the best of dannii already....... but then just when you think that's the case...........

I remember the Minogues from when they were little, and Dannii -- in my opinion -- was always the more talented, but Kylie had that intangible x-factor.

I can only imagine it wouldn't have been easy for Dannii, who'd performed musically much of her life, to see her sister become an international phenomenon on the back of a handful of catchy tunes.

It feels like Dannii's been trying to find herself since. I thought she had in recent years with appearances as a panelist on several shows, etc. She'd made a name for herself in her own right.

Her book felt like she was convincing herself of her own worth and refusing to admit any imperfections or foul-ups. Her marriage breakdown to Julian McMahon, for instance, was just skimmed over. Then she got her implants (apparently) due to low self-esteem. She then had a passage where somebody (can't remember who -- manager or stylist or somebody) wanted to feel her implants, and somebody walked in as they were doing so. That was something she gave time and details to -- again, just that little bit of shock value.

Have read a lot of bios over the years, and I understand lots of them are bubbly and superficial. This one seemed more so. Compare it to, say, Andre Agassi's bio, which is in-your-face, honest, and raw.

i must have skimmed over that bit myself.. have to drag the book out now and have a look-see...!!!

I think it was her gay stylist.

The bit I was really disappointed she glossed over was one of her tours, where she alluded they got up to all sorts of stuff, but she refused to divulge it.

On both points:

1. it's a really small passage in the book.

2. should rename it 'The Minogue Discussion Thread', since Kylie's also getting a bit of a working over.

she say's she was set up by the club owner, who deliberately made sure they got sat in an area where he had already repositioned cameras..... though it was a west london club that the lesbian 'incident' happened inside as i recall.... while she was with one of her female best friends, and a male friend.

to be honest, this is one part of the book (yes, i know some would say one of many) where i feel she kind of didn't tell the whole truth about what happened.

Yep. Another thing she glossed over as just a harmless girls night. Can't remember her exact words, but they were something to that effect. Mentioned the club manager set her up and put her under the cameras.

A lot of the book (as I've gone on ad nauseam) is like that, though.

Read the book ages ago, and it didn't make much of an imprint on me, but here are a handful of things which I think were underdeveloped:

- her marriage break-up to Julian McMahon. Barely touched upon. Think she just put it down to conflicting careers and time spent apart.
- the decision to get implants. Would seem a huge decision to make for mine, but she put it down to low self-esteem and flat boobs after losing weight following the break-up.
- no mention of her cheesecake calendars, (am talking about the ones where she went topless and see-through -- would seem a cry for attention).
- posing for Playboy -- she put it down purely to a financial thing. That she to this day says she would pose again suggests to me there was additional motivations for posing.
- the stripper thing. I recall reading at the time reports from eyewitnesses who said it was very risque. She just dismisses it as harmless and, as aforementioned, blames the club manager. (The club manager might've put her under a camera, but he didn't force any contact between her and the stripper).
- one of her tours where she says she got up to no good (as in excessive partying), but says nothing about it. Think she said something like, 'We swore we'd never talk about it'. (Then why write the damn book?)

I work in editing, and understand that a lot of bios are press-kits. But given she always tries to play-up some bad girl image, thought she might tell-all. Wouldn't be surprised if she's committed infidelity or had some homosexual tryst or posed naked in an attempt to get more notoriety than Kylie. I imagine it would burn that Dannii worked really hard to get any recognition, and then Kylie wears a pair of little gold hotpants and gains worldwide fame.

But Dannii just glosses over everything. Don't know if she just wants to deny those truths from the public or whether she hasn't even admitted a lot of that stuff to herself.

Of course, she might be a perfectly balanced, capable woman, and I'm reading way too much into it, but have always thought she comes across as insecure and needy, trying to emerge from her sister's shadow and make a name and identity for herself, (which she's finally done, but more so as a judge on crappy shows).

One other thing since I'm rambling on, I like both Kylie and Dannii (as in they're freaking hot), but I'm not a huge fan of their music.

I can see why Kylie's made it huge, but she has only a handful of songs (Confide in Me, Red-Blooded Woman, maybe On a Night Like This and Get Outta My Way) which have had any lasting appeal for me, as in I get a buzz when they come on the radio.

Don't know any of Dannii's music and living in Australia, I'm not aware of her being musically recognised with any real popularity or appeal.

Going back to when they were young, Kylie monotoned her songs, while Dannii had a booming voice and was a ripping talent, but it exploded for Kylie while it didn't for Dannii, (or at least nowhere near the same level).

I've always wondered how she's reconciled that. In the book, she talks about having all these club hits in Europe, but surely it'd be human nature for her to yearn for her sister's appeal.

Have mentioned elsewhere through this thread that it seems she's tried to make up for it with shock appeal (e.g. being risque in interviews, posing for Playboy, cheesecake calendars) in an attempt to bridge that chasm.
