After the passing of my mother in 2006 a song from the Silent Hill 3 video game soundtrack always made me think of her and the tears would start even now.

Songs that have meaning in your life
Hi there everyone.
I was just writing to ask if you have any songs in your life that have meaning.. Mine would be.... O Mio Babbino Caro....my dad loved this song and when i hear this song it reminds me of him. Wind Beneath my Wings....played at a close cousins funeral... Beautiful Stranger....it was played all the time when me and my ex traveled around europe... I am interested in knowing the songs that invoke memories and feelings in other people... |

For me this is more about songs that invoke eras than specific songs. There are two eras of my life which were especially fantastic and songs from those eras bring back so many good memories.

Into My Arms by Nick Cave - the most perfect love song I've ever heard (though Sinatra's Under My Skin comes mighty close). Beautiful video too, but I couldn't find a hi-res version. Still....

"Cool Change" by the Little River Band - for me it meant the relationship was on the rocks and it was time to move forward.

To coin a hackneyed phrase; music is the soundtrack of your life and so I guess every piece of music you hear has some significance. Not a fan of many 80s bands for example (Spandau, Duran etc) however when I hear them on the radio or TV it takes me back to the time where I would shout at the radio to play something decent Hard to pinpoint a specific song but many songs from 1988 remind me of finishing a relationship with the original ladette and then meeting a real lady. Remember when females were feminine rather than girly?? 1988 would have been Yazz, Bomb The Bass, S-Express etc.

For me, it's Little Jeannie, by Elton John.
It was released in mid-1980, one month before I was discharged from the US Navy (after serving 4 years). I was in my early 20s, and one chapter of my life was ending, and a new one was beginning. Whenever I hear Little Jeannie, I'm reminded of that wonderful time, when the future seemed limitless. |

The Great Escape
I guess I'm in a maudlin mood...
Although I'd seen it many times, and even kept a copy on VHS, it was only about 15 years or so ago that my Mum told me that this was my father's favourite film. I don't know why she waited so long to mention it. My father (Dad seems such an alien term to me) was killed when I was 2 years old, so I have only two memories of him. 1. Being picked up by flat hands under the armpits, and lifted over the chain link fence at my childhood home. 2. Sitting on his lap, steering the car (a Lotus Cortina!) while he worked the gears and the pedals. Not bad for a 2 year old. I had thought these memories were of my Mum, but when I talked to her about them she said that could only have been my father. She also said that I was so like him that if he'd lived we'd have fought like cat and dog. Anyway, I then saw this film in a new light. As if in some way by watching it I might get to know him in some way. I know that sounds silly, but I always watch it when it's on the telly. There's not much point posting a YouTube vid, as I'm sure you've all seen it, but I recall this observational comedy by Punt and Dennis that really hits the nail on the head when it comes to British WW2 films. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHGYd...feature=colike I hope now that my Mum has gone too they can pick up where they left off.
