I think my oldest one is about 15 years. I also have several old TV series I got from IOffer that are rips and they still play fine. Maybe I am just lucky
I have gone through 3-4 players over the years with out a problem. Currently I am using two Blu ray players and have no problem with either one.

To be honest: at my age I don't need stuff like 'Force Feedback' Joysticks anymore .... I tremble myself - even with my 'joy stick'!

Good luck with your mouse (and the little alien inside). I'll stay with 'classical'' equipment like a plain Logitech mouse. It has 'only' 1000 dpi, but at least it works flawlessly.

I still have 70 movies on videotape and I have played each one more than 10 times and they are still just as good as when they were new!
It is true that quality can vary, back around 10 years ago I worked for a company that contracted out their old back-up data to another firm, who took all the paperwork going back for years, scanned it, and wrote it on to discs (and then shredded the paperwork).

A little while later this caused a major problem, when it turned out that the company had used cheap labels for the discs - as soon as one was placed in an optical drive, the motion affected the label, so that all the data was corrupted, and the disc almost felt like it was melting if you took it out and held it.

Also, exposure to magnets can affect discs.

It's the same with book binding, although you'd think humanity might have perfected it by now, I have still bought a book new and it's fallen apart before I've finished reading it, and I am VERY careful with books.

I'm a bit confused too as I thought CDs and DVDs went on forever.

I've never had a problem I can recall and have CDs over 30 years old and DVDs a good 15/16 years old. They play just fine.

I have had people come to me with CDs they say won't play, but on my 1987 Marantz (battleship construction) player, they always do work. All very odd.

Thumbs down

I just read over the weekend that temperature variations in an apratment or a house can have a drastic effect on the stability of DVD discs. In Chicago the temperature in my apartment can vary from 62 degrees all the way up to almost 89 degrees F during the four seasons. It may be this that is degrading my discs. Studies show that discs don't like temepratures above 80 degrees F.
