There was one just around the corner from the primary school I attended as a child. At lunchtime the kids queueing would spill out onto the street.

They used to serve battered hamburgers with a slice of beetroot between two slices of bread. No buns or any other trimmings, except maybe sauce. Initially I think I may have dispensed with the beetroot, but then I grew to love it. It was the batter on the burgers that made it though.

For a while back then I used to eat at a local restaurant which was equidistant around another corner. My mom used to work at the pub next door, although mostly I dined alone.

Aside from the restaurants banana splits and Peach Melba's, I only crave those fish n' chip shop hamburgers from childhood, along with the ice-creams that were totally different back then.

You walk into a greaso joint, typically the owner will be names Con or Dimetri or Christos .... and his ugly wife who's name you never knew

You look up at that board and with about 3 bucks you'll order a hamburger with the lot and that bag of 3 or 4 steamed dimmies drowned in soy sauce and a can of coke ... you get your change of about 20 cents and while waiting you chuck it in the ageing pinne in the corner that ya tilt in the first minute
