If all you're looking to do is convert .mkv to .avi, I've had good luck with Freemake Video Converter.

What do you mean by way off? out of sync or just bad?
Ijust tried an mkv on Avidemux and had no problems.
maybe you can first encode the audio to pcm wav to later encode the audio stream using Virtualdub.

Or you can use Erightsoft SUPER encoder which does mkv to avi as well.

Probably variable bitrate audio, demux and re-encode to fixed bite rate.

The only problem is the sounds is WAY off.

I have tried editing using Virtual Dub Mod and cannot get anywhere w that program.

Is there a somewhat easy way to do this?

Anyone familiar w Avidemux (or another fairly easy program) that has experience editing MKV files please help and feel free to PM me
thanks
when you open the mkv in avidemux it will pop up a dialogue saying..

Select NO

You may also get another pop up saying the index is not upto date..

select YES

Now convert to avi as normal and the audio/video will be in perfect sync

There are converters around, but Matroska (mkv) as such is a pretty tight and quality format. Thus i am a bit puzzled that if you already have mkv-files, why downgrade to simple mp4 ? The process is painful both in conversion speed and resulting file size.

I would suggest grabbing a proper .mkv codec for your device and using it to open the original. This works of course with Windows or Linux devices - with iFruit devices you may just have to bite it...

the reason i need to convert is because i want to put movies onto my ipod. this means they have to be mpg (mp4v as they call it). anything i d'l in other formats i dont have probs with.. but as i said, mkv's have this codec issue. thanks for your suggestions. PhEg.

Not sure if this will work, but have you tried renaming the extension part of the filename? Sometimes, when trying to edit a file, and I have software that doesn't recognize .mkv files, I'll rename the .mkv's filename extension to .mp4 and the software will be able to recognize the file after being renamed. This might not work for devices though.
