T'was ever thus. One of my brilliant history master's adages was "It's not what is true - it is what men think is true that determines what they do".

I think we were doing better in more recent years but the trend had reversed as politics (in the widest sense) have polarised and retrenched. We are having to relearn old lessons and refight old battles.

Someone might correct me, but was in Ramses III who claimed all sorts of victories and built all sorts of triumphal monuments to himself - for fights that he either lost or never took place?
