It's generally accepted as #1 , one site which compares them all only downgrades it as we don't have many of them!
It's definitely the one I'd choose to be in if I had to take part in a tank battle.

Let`s not ignore the Tortellini M13 , as it was the finest amphibious battle tank the Italian army ever produced. True it had no propulsion or armaments , but then none were needed given it`s crews liked to surrender before war was even declared.

Forget it, knobby. Tank battles are no more likely than cavalry charges

WWII I like the Soviet stuff best. Meanest kid in the showroom is the JS2. At 45 tons it's about the same weight as the Panther, with similar mobility, but with 50% thicker armour and a 122mm gun. They built nearly as many of these babies as Tigers. Downside was the two part ammo and crew of only 4 meaning the commander had to double as gunner, a system which has pervaded into modern Soviet designs.

Talking of Soviet stuff, here's a couple pics of a Soviet rarerity - the T44. As you can imagine it was a stop gap between the T34/85 and the T54/55

Cool Tanks should come with a health warning

Seriously, they should. In museums they look great, but in reality they're filthy, dangerous beasts. They are filled with dirt and oil (only the outside is hosed) and nearly every one has live small caliber ammo lurking somewhere you don't know about

Take them on the wrong road, and suddenly you have an earth track and not a road. See how popular that makes you!

If you crash into anything, the 'anything' will probably be one-dimensional pretty quickly

Even if you're inside the thing, you aren't necessarily safe. You know those ad-movies/documentaries where they show some Wunder-Panzer almost flying across uneven terrain at ridiculous speed? - well, that would almost kill the crew, and if it didn't, the crew would kill the driver. So don't believe that nutty stuff

Tanks are also not NBC-proof, and I don't know why anyone believed they were. Look, if dust and rainwater comes in through hatches, gunsights or whatever (because seals are damaged) you know it can't be true

Finally, the things really get knocked out, even by inferior enemies. Did anyone know the Americans lost 80 Abrams tanks destroyed when invading Iraq? They lost more during the occupation

RE: Tanks should come with a health warning

You do have a point, a childhood friend's father and grand father were both tankers in the US Army who crewed WW2 and post WW2 tanks. They said if they had to do it all over again they would not become a crewman, pointing out most of the things in the above post. The heat and claustrophobic conditions were the two points of consensus that they pointed out as reasons why they wanted to avoid crewing a tank.

The German Ministry of Propaganda during WW2 really glamorized tank corps and their crews, their army news reel propaganda was focused on the Panzertruppen. Even though they comprised only a small percentage of the WW2 German Army.

In many WW2 tanks, cooking hot food on the top surface of a tank was no joke, especially in in North Africa and Southern Italy during the summer.

They do get knocked out. The British army has lost ten plus Challenger IIs in Iraq and the Israeli's lost 18 Merkarva IVs in during the incursion into Southern Lebanon in 2010.

That said, there are already hints of the future. The proposed M1A3 is supposed to be 10 to 12 tonnes lighter than the current M1A2 and (at last) being fitted with a genuinely fuel efficient diesel engine.
