It looks like another long day in the field for England and should the game continue in the same vein, just wondering if Smith will declare and perhaps give the England batsman a sticky hour at the crease this evening.

Smithy has declared with a lead of 252, and 43 overs to be bowled to the England batsman today plus of course all day (98 overs?) tomorrow.
That looks quite an aggressive declaration, but really it gives England no chance of winning, although it might gives us the prospect of going past the Saffie total and forcing them to bat out in the 4th innings.

Well I think this is South Africa's win, Amla 311, Kallis 182, Smith 131, we were doomed before we started to bat. If you're going to lose to someone it might as well be the No.2 side that was formerly No.1 but perhaps Dale Steyn and Graeme Smith's cry of 'we're coming for you' is about to be true. Short of a minor batting and bowling miracle tomorrow I cannot see England winning this Test. Onward to Test 2 shortly.

During this test England's bowling has been proven to be one dimensional & predictable.
As we saw against the West indies when batsmen get themselves in England's bowlers struggle to get them out. At the momement it appears that when plan A doesn't work, plan B looks as though they wait for the batsmen to get themselves out. If we want to beat the Protea's we've got to change our tactics. one way of doing this would be to stop Bresnan bowling bouncers when it's his last delivery of the over. And have the bowlers bowl yorkers at tail enders instead of bouncers.

England 177-5 at Lunch.
Bopara back in the hutch, while Bell and Prior keep the Saffers at bay. Two more seesions for them to survive, for I believe if either get out in the next session, it will be 1-0 South Africa. |

Something of a humbling at the hands of the South Africans and only just over a week to come up with some new ideas and vastly improved performances.
Not sure if we have underperformed or the South Africans are far better than us and remembering the first test against Australia at Lords in 2005, that defeat spurred as on to greater events, hopefully the same again here, if not we could be in for an uphill struggle. |

South Africa 60.0. Petersen 50 not out.
437 runs since England last took a wicket. Could be a long day? |

S.A. 351-6 and Petersen, yet another centurian for them, heading towards 200.
Its looking like another long day and we might be looking at the weather as a saviour. |

The Windies are currently hosting the Kiwis in a test series. The 2nd test has just got under way in Kingston, Jamaica, and I was amused to see that on Sunday they've rather wisely scheduled a "strategic drinks break" to show the men's 100m final from London on the big screen.
