What Have I Learned Today ?
Just how gullible the public can be Especially here I laughed when I heard this was happening These plastic bags at supermarkets Quite some years back we switched to those as they are, allegedly, biodegradable. Now some clown started how they are clogging up our waterways and oceans, so our 2 big supermarket giants decided to stop issuing them for free and. Now we either gotta bring our own or buy bags there at a 15 cent cost per bag ... that are made of, plastic Initially many were pleased at the green policy not realising how much they've been duped. Many in the public are now pissed off so what does one of the giants think of going back to the bags they stopped issuing Yep people just don't think, as soon as something is a green issue most just buy it as gospel till the bigger picture is exposed

The problem seems to be not the material of the bags but people's attitude. Did people flush these bags or what? |

They've introduced this policy in UK over the past 10 years or so. It makes perfect sense. The idea is that you reuse the same bags until they wear out. Instead of using cheap disposable bags every week and, I assume in the case of most people, binning them, instead you pay 5p / 10p for a bag that is used multiple times. The big UK supermarkets have a bag for life policy - when your bag starts falling to pieces through wear and tear, they'll replace it with a new one for free.

But here it's slightly different, see Coles, one of the giants today announced they are going back to the old bags thinking it might win customers from Woolworths, the other giant. Woolworths are staying with the new policy hoping it will keep the greenie customers, a gamble by both. Now, if you saw the video that started all this with a diver picking up what must have been 20 bags from the bottom sea floor it looked so staged to me it wasn't even funny, 20 bags in the space of maybe 5 to 10 metres of diving Sorry, that don't just happen, that was staged and I think the 2 giants decided to capitalise on it, now it's back firing

Yebut, they can be used hundreds of times before they need replacing. I bought four 10p ones from Sainsburys about two years ago and they're still going strong after being used week in and week out. Biodegradble bags take years to breakdown and can cause damage until they do.

No reason the old ones can't be used many times, not hundreds, just many, see what I mean about standing back and looking at the bigger picture Follow the dollars

I'm not aware of the ins and outs of it (and can't be bothered to look it up) but I know that supermarkets do make donations to charitable causes from monies raised through the sales of bags. What I am aware of is that the government, environmentalists and the largely cynical UK press have heaped praise upon the changes introduced in the UK.

They have been talking about charging for the plastic grocery bags here in my town in the US, but so far it had not happened, but I have no doubt it eventually will. Personally I think its all a ploy for supermarkets to recoup their cost on grocery bags which they feel they have been providing for free for far too long! Those so-called environment-concerned fanatics are probably the same ones who undetected pee in the swimming pool in proximity of family and friends, and with a smile on their faces!
