Quote:
This has produced the interesting question: For folks creating new works with Sherlock Holmes -- and there are a lot of them-- are they derivative of the "in copyright" or "out of copyright" Holmes' oeuvre. The matter has just been settled, last November, when the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal by the Doyle Estate . .. I imagine this ground of authorship/ownership of a fictional character has been trodden over in the past-Robert E Howard topped himself at an early age-31? but various other authors have continued writing fantasy stories featuring Conan the Barbarian and other Howard characters (Solomon Kane?)-presumably once an exception is made a precedent is set.
My father was fond of the 'Sanders of the River' novels-IIRC a number of these were written by authors other than the originator of the character... |

Maine is the only state in America that has just one syllable in it.
(I learnt this on a games show the other day). |

And Hawaii is the only one with no straight borders.

Tripoli is the capital of Libya, but it is also the name of the second largest city in a country in Asia...................
Lebanon! I had to look that up, 'cos I never realized that Lebanon is actually in Western Asia!

We all hear talk of King John(as this is the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta-the bill of rights if you like, that gave everyone the right to many things which we probably take for granted these days) who was forced to sign the Magna Carta by the Barons at Runnymede in 1215, but in fact it wasn't, it was SEALED with his ring seal although some painting show him holding a quill, which wasn't invented for a number of years AFTER - so I was reliably informed. My signature has Hancock's quote but Galton and Simpson who wrote for him clearly got it wrong mentioning SIGNING.

I think Galton & Simpson were demonstrating the conceited and opinionated Hancock's shaky grasp of History....

Yes indeed, well it was actually a spoof on the Henry Fonda film Twelve Angry Men where he gives an impassioned speech and gradually convinces the jury they have it wrong. Hancock was always portrayed as knowing everything but understanding nothing hence the speech in my signature. In that Hancock wears down the jury members with his odd logic and twisted historical ideals.

Which rather begs the obvious question of why Israel is allowed to participate in European sporting championships and similar pan-European conpetitions/contests..........

Apart from Arabs refusing to play them the Israeli's would be so vulnerable to attack IMO that it would only be a matter of time before an attack happened. After all if you are playing in an Arab country they will most likely be supplying at least the bulk of the security. That would be like letting kids loose in a candy store with no adults around.
