Default Singer: Grace Slick

Grace Slick is an American singer and songwriter, who for nearly three decades, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s. was one of the lead singers of rock groups 'The Great Society', 'Jefferson Airplane', 'Jefferson Starship', and 'Starship', and was also a solo artist. After she graduated she was was a a fashion model for I. Magnin & Company (a luxury department store .. the Burberry of the 60's) for a short time in the early sixties.

She then entered the music business after seeing 'Jefferson Airplane' perform, and she realized that they were making more money than she was as a model, and were having more fun performing. Slick and her husband formed 'The Great Society' .... Grace provided vocals and played guitar, piano and the recorder. In addition, she co-wrote a majority of the songs. In 1966 'Jefferson Airplane' asked Slick to join them. Slick stated that part of the reason for leaving was that the 'Airplane' was a much more professional band than 'The Great Society' .... what her husband and friends thought isn't recorded. The rest as they say is history .... after 'Jefferson Airplane' terminated, she and other band mates formed the even more popular 'Jefferson Starship' which begat 'Jefferson Starship', and this in turn begat 'Starship' .... ending finally in a solo career.

During the 1980s, Slick was the only former Jefferson Airplane member to be in Starship. The band went on to score three chart-topping successes ... In 1989, Slick and her former Jefferson Airplane band members reformed the group. They released a reunion album and a successful tour followed. The following year, she retired from the music business (a decision she has largely stuck too with just the occasional recording). After retiring from music, she began painting and drawing ... became a vegan ("not strict vegan, because I'm a hedonist pig. If I see a big chocolate cake that is made with eggs, I'll have it"). In 2006, Slick suffered from diverticulitis and a relapse required further surgery and a tracheotomy. She was placed in an induced coma for two months and then had to learn to walk again .. she is currently healthy.

However, all was not plain sailing ... She had become an alcoholic which affected her performances and she became a problem for the band. 'Airplane' had to cancel the first night in Germany on a European Tour because Slick was too intoxicated to perform, causing the audience to riot. Things were hardly better on the second night ... she performed, but was so inebriated she could not sing and then she abused the crowd verbally by mocking the country for losing World War II, and groped both female audience members and her band mates. The next day she left the group.

This event did not make her address the issues, and later that year she was dragged off of a San Francisco game show for abusing the contestants. She continued to function with this alcohol and substance abuse problem, but was admitted in to detoxification units at least twice, once during the 1970's and once in the 1990s (this time with her daughter China). She has since publicly acknowledged her alcoholism, and commented on her drug substance abuse with LSD, Marijuana and other substances in her books, interviews, and her autobiography.

She was also arrested three times for DUI. Oddly never once was she in a car at the time ... she has referred to these events as "TUI" ("Talking Under the Influence") and "Drunk Mouth". In other words she thought she was being 'drunk' clever, the police officers concerned didn't.
  1. During and argument in the car with a partner he pulled the car keys from the ignition, and tossed them through the car window onto someones front lawn. While Slick crawled around on the lawn looking for the keys, a police officer arrived, and asked what was happening. Her response (laughter) did not amuse the officer, and she was taken to jail.
  2. The second DUI occurred after her car engine burst into flames. When an officer arrived and asked what was happening, her response while pointing to the flames upset the officer and she was taken to the Marin County jail.
  3. The third DUI arrest happened after an officer caught her sitting against a tree trunk in the back woods of Marin County drinking wine, eating bread, and reading poetry. When the officer asked what she was doing, her sarcastic response got her another ride to the Marin County jail.
She was also reportedly arrested in 1994 for assault with a deadly weapon after pointing an unloaded gun at a police officer (after according to her, the officer came onto her property without explanation).

Finally, she was involved in an urban rock and roll myth ... By coincidence, both she and Tricia Nixon, President Richard Nixon's daughter, are alumnae of Finch College. When they had a tea party for the alumnae at the White House in 1969, Grace was naturally invited. She then invited the political activist Abbie Hoffman to be her escort, and according to Rock legend, they planned to spike President Richard Nixon's tea with 600 micrograms of LSD. The 'plan' was thwarted when they were prevented from even entering the White House, after Abbe Hoffman was recognized by White House security personnel as he was on the FBI blacklist ... they probably didn't even know who Slick was, and the legend of the plan, probably owes more to stoner re-telling over the intervening decades, than any actuality.

Quote: She told 'Classic Rock magazine' that she was a regular bed hopper in the 1960s: "I pretty much nailed anybody that was handy. My only regret is that I didn’t get Jimi Hendrix or Peter O’Toole". She did apparently draw the line at some things, however. "I’m not against orgies, but I’m not a good multi-tasker".

"all rock-and-rollers over the age of 50 look stupid and should retire".

Trivia:
  • Slick was nicknamed "The Chrome Nun" by David Crosby, who also referred to Paul Kantner as "Baron von Tollbooth". Their nicknames were used as the title of an album she made 'Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun'.
  • In 1971, after a 'long recording session', she crashed her car into a wall near the Golden Gate Bridge while racing with Jorma Kaukonen. She suffered only a concussion and later used the incident as the basis of her "Never Argue with a German if You're Tired or European Song", which appears on the Bark album.
Pictures:

She has a rather extensive thread here, where men of a certain age reminisce about the soft golden years of their youth .... when the world was a better place. As a man of a certain age myself, I sympathise lads .... there are much musical discussions and 'Rock Album' bibliographies on the thread (of the kind we had in my 6th form room), as well as pictures, and any follow ups to that thread please

Anyway, I have posted a few pictures, apologies for any dupes.

Default Actress and Singer: Violet Cameron

Violet Cameron, (aka Violet Lydia Thompson, or Madame de Bensand), was an actress and English singing 'star'. She was the niece of burlesque legend Lydia Thompson. Cameron began her stage career as a child star in 1871. She played several child roles at the Drury Lane Pantomime theatre. As an adult, she played many prominent roles in the most important English theatres, both as an actress and singer of the light operetta popular in theatres of the time. In 1886 she went to America and played in “The Commodore” and “Kenilworth”. However the tour was a fiasco and the company returned to the UK bankrupt, having had to 'pay the house' for most of the tour. It was estimated at the time that the losses amounted to $20,000 ($517,078.86 by todays values), which the groups manager had to meet. In 1893 she had great success in the stage play “Morocco Bound”..... but well girls will be girls.

She was married to a Mr David de Bensand who worked in the same theatre company .... she then met one Hugh B Lowther, aka the 5th Earl of Lonsdale, whose great wealth allowed him to live a life of leisure and luxury, and to support the arts, when it suited him (he was more famous for his connection to boxing than the theatre). He started an affair with Miss Cameron while they were in London, and formed a company for her, "The Violet Cameron Opera Company", of which he was the 'business manager' (and principal backer). He employed Cameron's husband in some minor role in the newly formed company.

It appears that Mr de Bensand had some inkling of the nature of his wife's involvement with Lonsdale, and there was consequently some trouble between the two men in London, but this was glossed over and apparently Mr de Bensand was given the impression that Lonsdale had relinquished his direct involvement with both the company, and his wife. However Lonsdale and Miss Cameron had other plans, and a tour of the US was arranged .... they failed to inform Mr de Bensand who remained at home, and unaware that Londsdale was in the US with his wife (travelling not under his family name of Lowther, but as Mr H.B Lonsdale).

The US press were initially interested, and the reports ran something like this "Miss Violet Cameron, the English songstress, will make her first appearance in America at the Casino instead of the Standard Theatre. Mr. H.B. Lonsdale, her agent here, says the change of place has been decided upon because he wants to start the tour earlier than could be managed at the Standard".

But the mood changed when the reports of Lonsdales true relations with Miss Cameron arrived from London, along shortly later by her husband. At the time the stories circulating, Miss Cameron was at Hotel called Hoffman House, while Lonsdale was at Delmonico's. But when Lord Lonsdale called at the Hoffman House to see Violet Cameron one morning, he was told that Edward S. Stokes, proprietor of the hotel, wished to see him on 'business of importance'. He was told that Miss Cameron had been requested to quit Hoffman house ….. Mr Stokes had read the stories about Miss Cameron and Lord Lonsdale, and as he ran a family establishment, he felt that he could no longer play host to the couple. He informed Mr Lonsdale that Miss Cameron was now at the Hotel Madison.

Lonsdale tried to assure him that he was only her 'business manager' and manager of her theatrical troupe, but the damage was done …… the press than got hold of the story of her 'eviction'. The problems were exacerbated by the fact that her husband had by then turned up at Hoffman house, and his lordship decided that it was him who had caused the problem. When Cameron moved to the Hotel Madison, Lonsdale move from Delmonico’s to Hoffman house a well (he said he 'sympathised with her over this slur so wanted to be near her!').

When asked by the press, Mr David de Bensand said “I shall stay here as long as my wife does. I came over to be with the company. I had no idea that Lord Lonsdale was coming until the steamer sailed. He has no right here. He has no right to the management of the company since the trouble in London, and he ought to go home to his wife. I have begun legal proceedings for a separation abroad, but I shall be here to protect my name until the separation is granted".

The scandal grew to epic proportions when the troupe were refused permission to perform in towns across the US, and the tour limped on, incurring massive losses. Eventually Lonsdale quit the US and shortly afterwards, so did Miss Cameron. Much to the barely disguised glee of the US Press.

You might have thought this would have ended matters, but no, they carried on with the affair, with Mr de Bensand still hotly pursuing the couple across the globe .... matters came to a head in the Newcastle courts. I repeat the final stories exactly as it appeared at the time in the press:

CAMERON.

AT the Newcastle-on-Tyne Police Court on 2nd August Lord Lonsdale was charged with having assaulted David de Bensand, husband of Miss Violet Cameron, whose operatic company was playing at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle, during last week. The assault was alleged to have been committed at the Turk's Head Hotel, Newcastle, at a late hour on Friday night. The complainant said he returned from London to Newcastle on Friday night, and proceeded to the Turk's Head Hotel, Grey- street. He there found Lord Lonsdale in a sitting room with his wife, who passed under the name of Violet Cameron.

Just as he got inside the room Lord Lonsdale seized him by the coat collar and threw him violently to the ground, after pushing him on the staircase. Subsequently he was approaching his wife, who was moving upstairs to her bedroom, when Lord Lonsdale again seized him and shook him. In cross examination, he admitted having spoken to Lord Lonsdale on Saturday and Sunday, after the assault had been committed. He had also smoked with Lord Lonsdale since.

He also admitted that at Edinburgh, Portobello, and other places he had recently stayed in the same hotels or lodgings as Lord Lonsdale and his wife stayed at. Miss Maxted, bookkeeper at the 'Turk's Head Hotel', said that Lord Lonsdale's valet, Mr. Morrison, ordered a bedroom for Miss Cameron, one for Lord Lonsdale, one for Miss Cameron's maid, and one for himself. He also ordered a sitting room for the use of Lord Lonsdale and Miss Cameron.

Charles Steward, a private detective from London, said he was staying at the Turk's Head Hotel, and heard a scuffle on the night in question. He went upstairs and saw Lord Lonsdale holding the complainant by the collar. It was represented for the defendant that the complainant went to the hotel with the intention of assaulting his wife, and that Lord Lonsdale interposed. The complainant, recalled, said his wife appeared to be very faithful to the defendant, because Lord Lonsdale had threatened her life if she resumed friendly relations with her husband. He denied having approached his wife in a violent manner. Edwin Morrison, valet to Lord Lonsdale, said no assault had been committed. Madame de Bensand was called. She said she was known as Violet Cameron.

The complainant was her husband; but she had filed a petition in the Divorce Court on the ground, of his cruelty. On Friday night she was at the 'Turk's Head Hotel'. Lord Lonsdale and herself were partners in theatrical speculation. She went into the room engaged for herself and Lord Lonsdale. Her husband followed her into the room. Her husband said "Well?" but neither Lord Lonsdale nor herself answered him. Lord Lonsdale afterwards asked him to leave the room, and on his refusing to do so Lord Lonsdale quietly led him to the door. It was not true that her husband was thrown on the ground. She was frightened of her husband. She believed he intended that night to assault her, and he would always assault her if he had the chance. She had always kept him [financially].

Mr. Alderman Hammond said the bench had come to the conclusion that an assault had been committed by Lord Lonsdale upon the complainant. They were, however, of opinion that the assault was a very trivial one. The proceedings from first to last appeared to be discreditable, when they considered the, position of the people; and Lord Lonsdale would perhaps remember for the future that it was improper to interfere unnecessarily between, man and wife. The husband of a woman had rights which the law gave him, and until those rights were dissolved or interfered with by the law, no man had a right to prevent a husband from having communication with his wife. Lord Lonsdale would have to pay a fine of 40s. and costs.

I guess you'll want to know how it all ended

This was the final press report I found:

In connection with the suit for divorce brought by Mr. de Bensaude against his wife, who is better known as Miss Violet Cameron, the actress, the Court, on September 21, issued an injunction against her husband restraining him from molesting his wife during their legal separation.

Lord Lonsdale admitted that improper relations subsisted between Miss Cameron and himself, and that her child, which was born last May, is named Lowther, the Earl's family name.

Now that's what I call a scandal!

Pictures:

Unfortunately, not too many pictures as it was at the cusp of regular theatre photographs, especially for a relative nobody

The Earl ........ and .... the Husband

Default Singer: Lily Allen

Is Lily Allen an "A" or a "B" lister? I ask because a while ago Poppypuss posted a single topless picture of her here .... he chose to offer no copy to 'accompany her entry here', and merely being topless on the beach is not enough to get her here (he happily posted it on another thread). I would have thought no more about it, but for the fact that there was a story on a web site I visited (I travel far and wide to find you the best of the worlds "B - Z" Listers), which said as she that as she wasn't invited to the Royal Wedding, she was very upset over it! .... She apparently 'Tweeted', “well, you can quote me as ‘outraged’, why does bloody 'Joss Stone' get an invite and not moi? I sang at the Diana concert too!”

This implies that Allen is considered by the establishment as a "B" lister, while Joss Stone is considered an "A" lister. Now if thats true, then that re-opens Allen for an entry here, but I happily confess that I am not up on the subtleties of UK "A" and "B" list celeb borderlines .... I therefore post her, but will just as happily take her down if anyone thinks she's actually "A" list. One clue as to her status is maybe that she now has a 'reality show' on a minor digital TV channel i.e. a space filler, that will be watched by millio... err, thousan.... err no, well hundreds of fascinated viewers (but not me). I will make it comparatively brief, just in case I have to take it down.

Lily Allen is an English recording artist and fashion designer. Daughter of musician Keith Allen, she is best known for her first mainstream single "Smile" which reached #1 in the UK Singles Chart in 2006. Her debut album, 'Alright, Still', was successful, selling over 2.6 million copies and brought Allen a nomination at the 'Grammy Awards', 'BRIT Awards' and 'MTV Video Music' Awards.

She has apparently 'retired' from recording, and in the autumn of 2010, Allen opened a fashion rental shop "Lucy in Disguise" with her sister Sarah, followed by the 2011 launching of her own record label which signed up a New York pop combo called "Cults".

Her 'Oop's' moments are all strictly from her wiki entry (She has a history of suing newspapers etc, when not happy ) and include:
  • One of her hit singles was "Fuck You"
  • Photos of her drunk and topless in the Cannes Film Festival were widely covered in the press.
  • Her appearance at the 2008 Glamour Awards also generated criticism, as she showed up intoxicated wearing a dress covered in decapitated Bambi figures.
  • She had an on-stage, expletive-laced exchange with Elton John.
  • Allen has shown her third nipple on television.
  • She commented on a feud with Katy Perry, saying that nothing was actually going on.
  • Accusations being made that Allen had infringed on other artists' copyrights by creating mix tapes early in her career, that she then made available via her website
  • In an interview with Q magazine saying "They’re just tits” Allen revealed she has been flashing people for years partially because of her 'aversion to bras'
  • Allen said she has suffered from the eating disorder Bulimia
  • On 28 June 2007, Allen was arrested in London for allegedly assaulting photographer Kevin Rush while she was leaving a nightclub in London's West End.
  • In September 2009, she shut down her MySpace account and stopped social networking completely in the December due to the 'abuse' she was taking.
She has a thread already here: So just a few pictures here, and as usual, any follow ups to her thread.

Default Actress: Lillian Roth

Lillian Roth was an American singer and actress. She started early when her stage parents groomed her and younger sister Anne for stardom at an early age and when she was only 6 years old she became the company's trademark for 'Educational Pictures', as the 'living statue' holding a lamp of knowledge. Unfortunately in her very frank autobiography, she said that she was molested by the man who painted her as a statue .... not a good start.

Things improved somewhat the following year when she made her Broadway debut in 'The Inner Man' followed the next year by her movie debut in 1918 in 'Pershing's Crusaders'. She toured with her sister Ann as "Lillian Roth and Co." being often were billed as "The Roth Kids". In 1923 she appeared in 'Artists and Models' after passing herself off as 19 yrs old, and went on to make 'Revels' with Frank Fay. In 1928, when Roth was just seventeen years old, she made the first of three 'Earl Carroll Vanities' in 1928 (the others were 1931 and 1932).
She then featured in the 'risque' and 'adult' themed 'Midnight Frolics', a Florenz Ziegfeld production for which she was probably barely of a legal age to perform in. She continued to work as a singer, in an era when so much was being set to music (sound had come to the movies), and she headlined the Palace Theatre in New York City. This ability to sing well attracted the attention of the movie studio's who were casting around for replacements for the 'silent' actresses whose careers had been ended by the 'talkies'.

Her film career started promisingly in 1929 with a seven-year contract with Paramount Pictures and she had completed 10 movies by 1931 before leaving Paramount ... she then made just two more films (1933, and 1934) until 1939 when 3 more films ended the first part of her movie career, which only resumed spasmodically in 1954 and again in the mid 1970's.

Unfortunately her personal life and professional life was increasingly overshadowed by her addiction to alcohol. This issue became noticeably more a of problem after the sudden death of her fiancee in the early 1930's, when she turned to the bottle as a full-scale addiction. Roth later said that she was too trusting of her husbands who made key decisions concerning her money and contracts ... but in truth her career had been hijacked by her addictions.

She then went through a spectacular number of marriages, there would be eight in all (which puts her right up there in the multiple partners stakes on this thread ). As her career self-destructed, she spiraled further and further into alcoholic oblivion and periods of self induced delirium. She spent decades in and out of sanatoriums and mental institutions being treated for alcohol related illnesses. Finally she met and married a former alcoholic in the late 1940's. He turned her health issues around, and she slowly revived her singing career in night clubs and later she toured the world to good reviews. According to Roth, he left her penniless after withdrawing all funds from their joint bank account when he left her in 1963.

She published her very open autobiography "I'll Cry Tomorrow" in 1954, which topped 'The New York Times' Best Sellers List. She was very candid in it about her 'sordid past' and battle with 'substance abuse'. Her latter employments in the 1960's included work as a bakery employee, hospital attendant, and package wrapper and she cut pies at an Automat for a while, but eventually she recovered her career after a triumphant return to Broadway, and she worked successfully as a singer and occasional actress until her retirement. She passed away in 1980 at 69 of a stroke.

Quotes:

"My life was never my own. It was charted before I was born."

Trivia:
  • A shy girl, being thrust into the limelight caused Roth to develop severe teen nervous disorders, which were the foundation of many of her later problems.
  • She and her sister met U.S. President Woodrow Wilson who had attended a performance of their vaudeville act, and who took them for a ride around the block in his chauffeur driven car.
  • Roth entered the Clark School of Concentration in the early 1920s ... WTF
  • Her autobiography 'I'll Cry Tomorrow' described her experiences with alcoholism, as well as abuse.
  • She was portrayed by Susan Hayward in the film 'I'll Cry Tomorrow' in 1955.
  • In 1953, a special telecast of "This Is Your Life" drew the largest amount of mail in the US shows history after Roth described her Alcoholism and substance abuse.
  • She would become the first celebrity to associate her name with Alcoholics Anonymous.
Pictures:

She has a thread here already, I have checked for dupes and I am posting a few illustrative pictures here .... any follow ups to her thread please

Arrow Actress, Ex-wife, Reality Nobody: Camille Donatacci aka Camille Grammer

Camille Donatacci aka Camille Grammer is a television personality most notable known as the ex-wife of TV star Kelsey Gramer. That alone should be enough to make her a headliner in this amazing thread curated by VintageKell, but alas that is just the beginning.

True, much of her fall from grace is directly related back to this broken pairing (which netted her between $30 - $50 million dollars) but more infamy can be found looking both before, and after, her thirteen year "encounter" with Kelsey.

As it turns out, not only did Camille pose nude in Playboy, but she also bared all in two erotic mid-'90s soft-core porn movies - Marilyn Chambers' Bedtime Stories and The Naked Detective. Her full IMDB profile can be read here.

Camille is currently one of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (since mid 2010) where her battles with other cast mates and the public airing of her and Kelsey dirty laundry has earned her the title of "the most hated housewife in America" according to Life & Style magazine.

Most recently she is falling over backwards trying to apologize for comments she made about Kelsey's junk (little penis).

This apology come less than a year after a gleeful Camille reportedly made bitter and hateful comments about Kayte Walsh’s (Kelsey's then girlfriend & now current wife) miscarriage.

Pictures: A few for reference only.

Camille has a post from HSOD here and her main thread is here.

Default Andraya M. Howard: Video Model

Andraya M. Howard is a video model better known as 'Draya Michele', and who has had an affair with R&B star Chris Brown, and also dated Kevin Durant (of course I haven't heard of any of these people ) She is apparently renowned for her 'Booty' .... which is about as much talent as she has. But rather shamefully she has also been exposed as a poor mother. Apparently while she was out partying with her various 'boyfriends', her 7-year-old son was at 'home alone', eating microwave dinners in a filthy and squalid (Police said there was dog feces and dog urine in several places) apartment.

'Draya' was arrested earlier in the year, on a charge of endangering the welfare of the child, and the child taken away from her. According to police, the boy would come home from school to an empty apartment, and spend nights alone while his mother worked in Philadelphia, or went out. She remained free on $25,000 bail after arraignment before a District Judge. According to the court records: A policeman found the boy alone in a disheveled apartment about 2 a.m. after he had called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers he was 'home alone' (again). .... The boy later told the Patrolman that he called his mother’s cell phone about 20 times to try and find out where she was, after she had initially told him she would be home soon.

The boy apparently ate a TV dinner, then took care of the small dog that was in the home at the time ... the police contacted the boy’s grandmother, who took him home. The grandmother later explained that she had been watching her grandson while Howard went to her job overnight in Philadelphia, but this care had ceased several months before the boy called the police. Ms Howard, who said (possibly euphemistically) that she worked as a 'model', returned home about 8:45 a.m. the next morning and the police told her that her son had been taken in to the care of the county Children and Youth Services while they investigated.

Its easy to immediately react with some revulsion to this sad little tale, but initially I was gonna say that 'she is a poor, badly educated black girl, living in a tough ethnic area. Her only talent is her 'booty', and when that's gone she will undoubtedly find life even harder ... she probably didn't mean to neglect the boy, but had to make money with the only assets she had .... lets not judge too harshly without firstly having walked in her shoes for a little while' ... but apparently undaunted by the experience, she was later seen partying with some dude called Khalifa ... obviously not attempting to get her child back. She has been much castigated in the webosphere for her attitude. I guess you will have to decide for yourself.

Default Dancer and 'Happiness' Campaigner: Monserrat Morilles

This a strange little tale from 2008 Chile, which illustrates, if it ever needed illustrating, how easy it is to achieve a little bit of celebrity. Monserrat Morilles achieved some fame and notoriety in Chile, and in the wider Spanish speaking world .... she was variously described as a 'model', 'pole dancer', 'exotic dancer' or plain 'stripper'.

She came to the worlds attention by going on a crusade to challenge the 'prudishness of Chilean society' ... she chose to do so by performing a series of striptease dances on the Santiago underground, 'the metro'. Not content with that (and incidentally the massive publicity they engendered), she attempted to remove her clothes outside the Presidential Palace in the capital, Santiago.

Needless to say, the police were not happy and she was arrested. Undaunted, she told reporters that her performances would continue ... the events caused a media sensation, and she was instantly dubbed "La Diosa del Metro" or 'the Metro Goddess'. Her name was broadcast far and wide, up to the USA and even made it to these shores via the BBC.

Ms Morilles, 26, called her performances "happy minutes", and performed on the port side as well as the train system .... then a professional pole dancer, she boarded the trains at one station, and stripped down to skimpy underwear in time to exit at the next station.

"This is just a beginning. We are starting an idea here that will grow and be developed further," she told Reuters news agency as she was being taken into custody. "Chile is still a pretty timid country," said her manager, "People aren't very extroverted and we want to take aim at that and make Chile a happier country."

Needless to say, she very quickly disappeared after her 'Andy Warhol' 15 mins of fame, but strangely she found that her bookings, and the fees she could command, very much improved after the events.

Default Beauty Queen & Actress: Zsa Zsa Gabor

Zsa Zsa Gabor (Born as Sári Gábor) is a Hungarian-born American stage, film and television actress .... she first started on the Hungarian stage in 1932, and was crowned Miss Hungary in 1936 (so the usual route, then). In 1936 she sang the soubrette role in the operetta, 'Der singende Traum' ("The Singing Dream") in Vienna before she emigrated to the United States in 1941 and became a sought-after actress because of her 'European' accent.

Her first movie role was as supporting actress in 'Lovely to Look At', and she was in over 60 movies, but she rarely was the lead role, mainly acting in supporting (a notable exception was 'Moulin Rouge' in 1952), and she also embraced the medium of television. She was a popular guest on talk shows and panel games in the US and UK for many years, especially the 1950's through to the end of the 1960's.

She is perhaps better known for her antics off screen, starting with her nine husbands, including hotel magnate Conrad Hilton and actor George Sanders (this amount of marriages may make her champion, or joint champion in the maritally addicted gals of this thread ... I have lost track). She once stated, "Men have always liked me and I have always liked men. But I like a mannish man, a man who knows how to talk to and treat a woman—not just a man with muscles"

For the record, the marriages are as follows:
  1. Burhan Asaf Belge (1937–1941) (divorced)
  2. Conrad Hilton (April 10, 1942–1947) (divorced)
  3. George Sanders (April 2, 1949 – April 2, 1954) (divorced)
  4. Herbert Hutner (November 5, 1962 – March 3, 1966) (divorced)
  5. Joshua S. Cosden, Jr. (March 9, 1966 – October 18, 1967) (divorced)
  6. Jack Ryan (January 21, 1975 – August 24, 1976) (divorced)
  7. Michael O'Hara (August 27, 1976–1983) (divorced)
  8. Felipe de Alba (April 13, 1983 – April 14, 1983) (annulled)
  9. Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt (August 14, 1986 – present)
She has also had her moments, that were maybe not so praiseworthy.

While Gabor was still married to Conrad Hilton, she once admitted to having sexual relations with her stepson Nicky Hilton, the future husband of Elizabeth Taylor and according to her 1991 autobiography 'One Lifetime Is Not Enough', her pregnancy resulted from rape by then-husband Conrad Hilton.

In 2005, Gabor accused her daughter of larceny and fraud (forging her signature to get a $2 million loan on her mother's Bel Air house), and filed a lawsuit against her in a California court. However, the court threw out the case due to Gabor's refusal to appear in court or to sign an affidavit that she indeed was a co-plaintiff on the original lawsuit filed by her husband, Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt.

Finally she had the clash with the law .... In June 1989, in Beverly Hills, California a police officer stopped her for a traffic violation. She was driving with a suspended license and registration. A flask of liquor was found in her car and Gabor was alleged to have slapped the face of the police officer. She was convicted and sentenced to do community work at a women's shelter. Never one to miss an opportunity, she later poked fun at the event in various film and TV cameo appearances, most notably in the 1991 comedy 'The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear', where she swats the police siren at the end of the opening credits shouting, "This happens every f*cking time I go shopping!!" The incident was was also parodied in the 1993 movie, "The Beverly Hillbillies".

Gabor also had a long-running feud with German-born actress Elke Sommer that began in 1984 when both appeared on 'Circus of the Stars' and escalated into a multi-million dollar libel suit by 1993 .... Sommer was awarded $3.3 million in damages from Gabor and her husband, Frederick von Anhalt, for their defamation of her in interviews published in a pair of German publications in 1990.

Her recent years have been plagued with serious health issues, and allegations of financial losses (these losses have not been proved).

Quote:

"I am a marvelous housekeeper: Every time I leave a man I keep his house."

Trivia:
  • Director John Huston, described her as a "creditable" actress.
  • Television host Merv Griffin, in his autobiography, described the Gabors, "All these years later, it's hard to describe the phenomenon of the three glamorous Gabor girls and their ubiquitous mother. They burst onto the society pages and into the gossip columns so suddenly, and with such force, it was as if they'd been dropped out of the sky."
  • She was the only Gabor sister to ever become pregnant.

She has a full thread here, but I tried to avoid dupes, or at least provide better versions, but apologies to any original posters. Any follow ups to her thread please

Default Chanteuse and Designer: Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel was a French fashion designer whose pursuit of expensive simplicity made her rich. She was the founder of one of the most famous fashion brands, 'Chanel', but it didn't start out like this, oh no, there was a rocky road to fame, which features many moments she wouldn't be proud of. She was the second daughter an illiterate market stallholder and an equally illiterate laundrywoman and this illiteracy later proved to be a blessing to our heroine as neither of them could confirm the correct spelling of the surname to the hospital and it was recorded by the mayor François Poitou as "Chasnel".

This misspelling made the tracing of her roots almost impossible for early biographers when Chanel later rose to prominence (Later in life, she concocted an elaborate false history for her humble beginnings. Chanel would steadfastly claim that when her mother died, her father sailed for America to get rich and she was sent to live with two cold-hearted spinster aunts. She even claimed to have been born in 1893 as opposed to 1883, and that her mother had died when Coco was two instead of twelve).... Her mother died and her father abandoned the children and the young Chanel spent six years in a Catholic orphanage of the Roman Catholic, where she learned the trade of a seamstress until when she turned eighteen, she was obliged to leave the orphanage and find a job.

She affiliated with the circus of Moulins as a cabaret singer (Chanteuse). She performed in bars in Vichy and Moulins where she was known as "Coco". Chanel later said that it was a "shortened version of coquette, the French word for 'kept women," according to an article in 'The Atlantic'. However the dream of being a singer failed when she couldn't get steady work as a singer, and she started designing hats 'as a hobby' ... she became a licensed modiste (hat maker) in 1910, and she eventually found a backer and opened her first boutique at 21 rue Cambon, Paris named 'Chanel Modes' and her backers own clothing style, notably his English jersey blazers, inspired her creation of the 'Chanel Look'. Chanel's modiste career bloomed once theatre actress Gabrielle Dorziat modelled her hats in the play 'Bel Ami' in 1912 (Subsequently, Dorizat modelled her hats again in Les Modes) and by 1919, Chanel was registered as a couturiere and established her maison de couture at 31 rue Cambon

In 1924, Chanel made an agreement with the Wertheimer brothers, Pierre and Paul, to create a corporate entity, "Parfums Chanel." The Wertheimers agreed to provide full financing for production, marketing and distribution of Chanel No. 5. For ten percent of the stock, Chanel licensed her name to "Parfums Chanel" and removed herself from involvement in all business operations ... she then spent years trying to get control back .... she did so by getting the German officials to legalize her right to sole ownership, because the Wertheimers, were Jewish and had fled France, and Chanel used her position as an “Aryan” to try and get them removed during the occupation of France Ultimately, the Wertheimers and Chanel came to a mutual accommodation, re-negotiating the original 1924 contract to her benefit (they had put a Christian in charge during the war, which stopped her original claim).

In 1931 Chanel met movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn who offered Chanel the sum of a million dollars (approximately seventy-five million today), to go to Hollywood twice a year to design costumes for MGM stars. Chanel accepted the offer. En route to California from New York traveling in a white train car, which had been luxuriously outfitted specifically for her use, she was interviewed by Colliers magazine in 1932. Chanel said she had agreed to the arrangement to "see what the pictures have to offer me and what I have to offer the pictures" ... not the money then

Collaborator:

In 1939, at the beginning of World War II, Chanel closed her shops. She believed that it was not a time for fashion but she didn't leave France. During the German occupation Chanel resided at the Hotel Ritz, which was also noteworthy for being the preferred place of residence for upper echelon German military staff. She also maintained an apartment above her couture house at 31 rue Cambon.

Chanel’s friend and biographer Marcel Haedrich provided a telling estimation of her wartime interaction with the Nazi regime: “If one took seriously the few disclosures that Mademoiselle Chanel allowed herself to make about those black years of the occupation, one’s teeth would be set on edge.” ... just today fresh allegations by biographer Hal Vaughan state that Chanel actually worked for German military intelligence during the war.

Whilst not a spy, she was a collaborator "She was a facilitator. She knew everybody in Spain, she knew everybody in England, and she helped out the Nazis." In 1945, she moved to Switzerland, (possibly to avoid the collaboration trials). There are some suggestions that she was only spared from being tried as a collaborator due to either Churchill's intervention, or as others say because of the British Royal Family intervening.

Post War:

On 17 May 1947, Chanel received wartime profits of Chanel No. 5 in the amount of some nine million dollars in today’s money, and in the future her share would be two percent of all Chanel No. 5 sales worldwide. The financial benefit to her would be earnings of twenty-five million dollars a year, making her at the time one of the richest women in the world.

She finally returned to Paris in 1954 when the collaborations offences were no longer a public thirst ... That same year she returned to the fashion world. Oddly the re-establishment of her couture house in 1954 was fully financed by Chanel’s old nemesis in the perfume battle, Pierre Wertheimer. The price of this was to allow Wertheimer to maintain ownership of “Parfums Chanel.” In return, Wertheimer agreed to pay for all of Chanel’s expenses from the large to the trivial for as long as she lived.

Her new collection did not have much success with the Parisians because of her relationship with the Nazis (not all had been forgotten) but the British and Americans became her faithful customers ... 1961 saw the movie "Breakfast At tiffanys" with Audrey Hepburn in "that little black dress" by Chanel.

In early 1971 Chanel, then eighty-seven years old, was tired and ailing but continued to adhere to her usual schedule, overseeing the preparation of the spring collection. She died on Sunday 10 January, at the Hotel Ritz where she had resided for more than thirty years. She had gone for a long drive that afternoon and, not feeling well, had retired early to bed.

Affairs:

While singing at Moulins she met rich, young French textile heir Étienne Balsan, to whom she soon became an acknowledged mistress, keeping her day job in a tailoring shop, while Balsan lavished on her the baubles of "the rich life" ... diamonds, dresses, and pearls.

In 1909 Chanel met and began an affair with one of Balsan's friends, Captain Arthur Edward 'Boy' Capel (he was also her first backer) ... The couple spent time together at fashionable resorts such as Deauville, but he was never faithful to Chanel, considering her nothing more than one mistress amongst many. The affair lasted nine years, but even after Capel married an aristocratic English girl 1918, he did not completely break off with Chanel. His death in a car accident, in late 1919, was the single most devastating event in Chanel's life. A roadside memorial at the site of the accident was placed there by Chanel, who visited it in later years to place flowers there

During the war she had a public affair with Hans Günther von Dincklage, a German military intelligence officer (and something of a playboy), who arranged for her to remain in the hotel Ritz (a habit she never lost).

Coco dated some of the most influential men of her time, but she never married. The reason may be found in her answer, when asked why she did not marry the Duke of Westminster (a long term lover) "There have been several Duchesses of Westminster. There is only one Chanel."

Trivia:
  • She was the only person in the couturier field to be named on Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century.
  • Some biographers suggests that the fashion designer's nephew André Palasse, who was supposedly the only child of her sister Julie, may actually have been Chanel's child by Étienne Balsan.
  • In 1920, she was introduced by ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev to Igor Stravinsky, composer of 'The Rite of Spring', to whom she extended an offer for him and his family to reside with her.
  • She proclaimed that Pierre Wertheimer was “the bandit who screwed me.”
  • Chanel was a very close friend of Walter Schellenberg to the extent that when he died of cancer penniless in Turin, Chanel paid for his funeral.
  • Some suggest that Coco Chanel had close contact with another Nazi, Walter Kutschmann, who was responsible for the murder of thousands of Poland's Jews early in World War II. He was transferred to France in 1943 where he became Chanel's Paris SS contact. Kutschmann made frequent trips to Spain with Chanel with large sums of money passing between them
