You must have attended games on warm nights. Many games featured high winds and forty degree temperatures. For the most part, the weather was better during football season. The new park is built in a more sheltered location and better designed. That was the reason so many Giants fans preferred visiting San Diego to watch the team play. |

Just a nice place to watch a game, but believe me, I have no doubt about the cold winds and miserable conditions. I've had plenty of friends go on those nights. Makes me appreciate Willie Mays and Willie McCovey all the more. |

I had thought, well, here we go again (the Padres had lost 6 of 7 and for the first time this year fell under .500).
Now, 3 games later, they have moved back into 2nd place by sweeping Arizona. The two pitchers that were expected (after what they did last year) to lead the team have higher ERAs and and worse records - but some of the pitchers who had never been in the majors before this year have done a pretty good job, over all. They need to get to the 7th inning instead of the 5th. And since some of them are on a short innings regime, there will have to be help from the minors. The bull pen has looked tired from having to start pitching in the 4th or 5th innings, and thus hasn't been up to snuff (except for the closer, who already has 20 saves, with a 1.13 ERA). Too bad only a few of the hitters have done what was expected of them - not enough getting on base, swinging at too many bad pitches, and not clutch hitting. And, they've committed a lot of base running blunders. Still, almost a third of the way through the season, not as bad a record as I had feared. Now if those under-performing could get 'with it', they could have an outside chance of making the playoffs.

El (not so) Gigantes
The Giants have been every bit as bad as feared. They are still trying to find coverage for left field. Holland and Pomeranz have confirmed that they are done. The magic wore off for Dereck Rodriguez and he is trying to sort things out in AAA. The good news is that Shaun Anderson is getting the chance to learn on the job as tries to nail down his place in the middle of the rotation.
Bruce Bochy continues his pattern of messing with young players' heads as he subjects Steven Duggar to random playing time. Perhaps, Andrew Suarez will finally claim a spot at the back of the rotation, leaving only one spot to fill until Johnny Cueto returns in September. Evan Longoria has always hit better in the months of June through August. He will play in any event as Pablo's defense is exactly what can be expected from a player 60 lbs overweight. Somebody has to finish last. The Giants should do so entirely on merit. |

The A's are such an entertaining club. The weak starting pitching, decent bullpen, and young and erratic lineup create delightful uncertainty as they rip off long losing and winning streaks.
If their injured pitchers recover and a few more prospects pan out, they could be serious contenders in the next couple of years. Or not. |

2019 finds me celebrating my thirty-ninth season as a fan of all things Chicago Cubs and I couldn't be happier with the goings on with the team that has resided at 1060 Addison st. for over 103 unforgettable years. This somewhat down, and then up, and then WAY UP season has seen fantastic offensive output from top Cubbie bats Javier Baez, Wilson Conteras, and the always amazing Anthony Rizzo along with solid defense from left fielder Kyle Schwarber and SS Addison Russell- most assuredly all of the crucial ingredients are in place for our team to return to post season glory once again. Comin' for you Houston. Count on it.

The Chicago National League franchise is one of the two that has been in continuous operation for 144 seasons since the founding of the league in 1876. (The other is the team currently based in Atlanta.) William Hulbert of what was then called the Chicago White Stockings was the driving force in the creation of the National League, which provided better organization,i.e., stronger ownership discipline and greater control of players' contracts than its predecessor known as the National Association. We really owe the institution of major league baseball to the efforts Hulbert, Albert Spalding, and Cap Anson of the Chicago club.
The club was one of the league's perennial powers until the late 1940s. It is really good to have them back as annual contenders. |

almost at the half-season mark...
and the Padres are barely hanging in there, with a 40-40 record. The poor bullpen, overworked, has fallen apart in the past 28 games, coughing up leads that led to losses in 9-10 games. The team had lost 3 straight to the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates before coming back to life against what might be the worst team in the past 70 or more years - the Orioles. They were 47-115 last year, and this year are 22-58.
At least the hitters are starting to come around, even though their on base average is still pretty low and their average with men in scoring position isn't anything to brag about either.

It is a building year with some good looking starting pitchers in the minor league system. It looks like there may even be some hitters percolating, too.
But that is one ugly ass injury list y'all got down there. The Giants will keep everyone else out of the cellar for the foreseeable future. They have overachieved to reach 34-46. Those championship veterans know how to eke out wins. |

My Nationals, after stumbling along under .500 for the first half, have finally gotten back to even, and their next three series are all against bad teams; Detroit, Miami, and KC. Hopefully they can stay hot at the plate, and limit the bullpen implosions that cost so many games earlier.
