I met and chatted with Nils Lofgren, (E Street Band,) when he did a solo tour of the UK last year. Very approachable; and a genuinely nice guy

Michael Winner, no need for apologies, on the several occasions I met him at several film festivals, he was a delight to talk with, always had a smile on his face and more than a few stories about the film industry to talk about. Nice chap, who loved to play the villian, especially to the press.

Ten years ago, I spoke during 30 minutes with French composer "Michel Legrand".
Maybe you don't know him.
He wrote some melodies for films like The Thomas Crown Affair, Summer of '42 and Yentl.

He was very nice.

I "met" Mr Peter Ustinov just few monthes before he died.
I was surprised by the man. He was in a very weak state. He was waiting for a journalist. When the journalist came and asked him questions, Mr. Ustinov spoke as he was in fit conditions. When the journalist went away, Mr. Ustinov was down.
That was very surprising. I thought that probably is the difference between a star and a common guy like me, the ability to overpass himself.

Default Does standing in line for an autograph count?

If so:

Adam West--mid 70's, car show, nice guy.

Charlie Duke, Apollo 16 astronaut--1980, came to my high school to do a speech. Real nice guy.

Stan Lee--late 80's comics convention, also nice.

Charlotte Church--about 1999 or 2000 during a CD signing tour early in her career, appeared quite shy.

Lou Ferrigno--2012, comics convention, very outgoing, still bench-pressing semi-trailers.

Met Billy and Alec Baldwin, and I think Stephen in the 90's at my old job. Their mother lives in the area.

Got an autograph from Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame. Groovy.

Helped set up Bruce Hornsby for a signing at a store I worked at. That's just the way it is...

Nadia Hilton is from my town, and I've seen her out and about. Never talked to her as she's no longer associated positively with the industry.

In the 90's, porn stars would dance at one of the local adult bookstores. I worked in the mall which was always a hot spot, faux and real celebrities coming in. Apparently I met Mimi Miyagi at my job at the time but I have no recollection whatsoever!

Since I was involved in photography I met several. They include Jerry Lewis, Bill Clinton, Tommy Lee Jones, Clint Eastwood, and Steven Spielberg among others.

What counts as famous? I notice that there are clearly some national and professional distinctions. There are famous Brits that I've never heard of, and there are famous American sports figures I've never heard of.

I spent a day with Adlai Stevenson in Seattle in 1965 a couple of months before he died of a heart attack in London. I had volunteered to take photos of him with a variety of state and local politicians. He was reserved and, some folks thought, remote. I think he was simply shy. He refused autographs, and loved to talk politics.

I had spent somewhat less time with Hubert Humphrey at a similar event the year before when he was under consideration as LBJ's vice president. Personally he was the opposite of Stevenson. Gregarious, talkative, and outgoing, he shook every hand and signed every autograph. Strangely, we stayed in touch, usually by mail, arguing bitterly over the Vietnam War. Rather, I was bitter and he was tolerant.

Much less "famous", but with more achievements, I was more closely acquainted with Warren G. Magnuson, a U.S. senator from Washington State. As chair of the Senate Commerce Committee he was responsible for a lot of aspects of American life, from seat belts in cars to the strike pad on matchbooks being on the back. He drank too much, which was especially dangerous for a diabetic. When Nixon went to China, Chou en-lai insisted that Magnuson come along, which infuriated Nixon. But when he was first elected to Congress, Magnuson had pushed through a repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act. It had brought no benefit to him politically, but he felt it was the right thing to do.

Through that relationship I met Ralph Nader, who makes a fantastic first impression and gets a lot of people's admiration. Until they discover the self-absorbed narcissist within. I'd better stop here.

Lest I sound too much like a liberal fanboy, I took a class from Milton Friedman at Chicago and had a couple of occasions to get drunk with him. He held his liquor much better than I did, considering that he was almost always the shortest guy in the room.

So much for the 1960s.
