Default Mahlon Blaine, illustrations to Justine (Marquis de Sade)

"Mahlon Blaine was a twentieth century American artist who is remembered chiefly today for his brilliant illustrations to many books, both children's and adult. His mastery of line was, and remains, unique and masterful. Likened, rightfully, to Aubrey Beardsley, Blaine was another original mind, and his interest in portraying the animal nature of humanity lost him a wider audience."

----

Just one example from a site with the work of hundreds of erotic artists, and also texts (including Justine: http://www.all-art.org/world_literature/de_sade1.htm)

Default more from Justine (Marquis de Sade)

Another set of illustrations from the same source ("a Dutch printing, c. 1800").

Funnily enough I originally filed the Lacombiere pix as "Arrow shirts" because that's how I remembered them.

Here's a stray pic which may well be the same artist as the Lacombieres, maybe another work is out there?

Lacombiere was also illlustrated by others. Looking at the first pic you wonder if socks are specifically mentioned in the text

Fascinating artist . . . hard to pin down as he worked in so many styles.

That's a great poster but no, it's a bit tame for Leyendecker...remember these posters were commissioned by the same military organisation that 50 years later found the Village People a bit too camp:

Do you know Leyendecker had a brother, Francis Xavier? This falls into the "OK, now you're just showing off" category

I had hoped to find the rest of this series, in which a sewing circle descends into an orgy

Instead I was led to this tale of domestic bliss

French artist, specializes in semi-nude young women. Not a bad specialty, if you ask me . . .

Default Forbidden Asia

A book of good quality Asian art with a philosophical commentary arguing that sex in the East is a more refined and higher order business than it is in the decadent, earthy West.

Had no idea, wow, his work is -dare I say it-- even more gay

. . . . rates 5 Helsinkis out of Tom's Finland.

I think its incredibly funny that they were getting away with material that is this suggestive . . .

Anything can look gay if you have that sort of a mind. When Randy Scott (who lookds like he walkedout of a Leyendecker poster) moved in with Cary Grant no-one seems to have batted an eyelid at pics like these:

Come to that no-one batted an eyelid when Cary Grant declared "I just went gay all of a sudden!" in Bringing up Baby

The studios don't seem to have been concerned:

But in retrospect even a movie like My Favorite Wife seems like an elaborate in-joke:

But, different times.
