Thelma Hill was an American silent screen comedian. She broke into films easily because she lived just blocks from the Mack Sennett studios and was noticed by both Mack Sennett and Dick Jones. So whilst at school she did 'atmosphere and bits' during vacations and weekends, and she quickly became known as "everybody's protégé", which was her real break through.

Her first feature was in a series of two-reel comedies that were made for Sennett, and when he revived his famous "Bathing Girls," she was the first to don the bathing suit, as most of her parts up till then had been in bathing suits e.g. in her first movie as a bit player, "Picking Peaches," she had dived off a pier. As she got older, Hill began to double for Mabel Normand (who ironically, because of her overwhelming cocaine habit, often showed up late for work or not at all).

She later starred opposite Ben Turpin in 'The Prodigal Bridegroom' and went on to become Laurel & Hardy's leading lady in 1928's 'Two Tars'. She was signed by MGM for a role in 'The Fair Coed' in 1927 .... she didn't fair well with the advent of the 'talkies' and her career of 89 silent movie roles was effectively ended by 1932 - she made just three talkies but only 1 was credited, and were bit parts.

But whilst her nemesis may have been the microphone, her demon was one of the other thread favourites ..... alcohol. She had got engaged to director St. Elmo Boyce, and a former Sennett cinematographer. Boyce had a drinking problem, which Hill was also well on the way to developing. The relationship and Boyce's career began to struggle and Boyce committed suicide in 1930 by poisoning.

With her career over, she got married to another drinking man John Sinclair, W. C. Fields' stunt double and gag writer (WC Fields was also his drinking buddy ... say no more), and Thelma began drinking even more heavily. She had been diagnosed with chronic alcoholism in 1932, and with pellagra (a B-vitamin deficiency, specifically niacin, often found in alcoholics) in 1937. The effects of malnutrition caused by alcoholism affect all organs in the body, and she drank away her health and youth, and died before her thirty-second birthday in 1938. Her official cause of death following an autopsy was cerebral hemorrhage.

Deena Nicole Cortese is an American reality television personality who has appeared on the MTV reality show Jersey Shore since 2011. She originally auditioned for season 1 of Jersey Shore but was rejected ... but as she was friends with fellow housemate Nicole 'snooki' Polizzi, she ended up appearing in it anyway, before formally joining the show. She refers to herself as "a blast in a glass" and "a walking holiday", which are presumably attempts to give herself a 'persona' or is that personality?

And that's about it, like her friend Snooki, she's chubby, with few obvious charms or talents ..... she also looks at least 10 yrs older than her stated age of 25. She has managed to generate enough publicity to enter my consciousness by getting drunk, slapping cars, falling about on the boardwalk, and then getting arrested and taken to the Seaside Heights police station. She was served with a summons and released; no bail needed.

Lauryn Hill is an American singer-songwriter, rapper, record producer, and actress. Born to a middle class African-American family in New Jersey where music was part of the lifestyle.

Her first foray into show business wasn't easy, when in 1988, she appeared as an Amateur Night contestant on 'It's Showtime' at the Apollo. She sang her own version of Smokey Robinson's song "Who's Lovin' You?", where she was booed tremendously, but persevered and ended up with audience applause ... the bug was caught and she dropped out of college to pursue her entertainment career.

She joined the Fugees and Hill's singing gained worldwide acclaim with the Fugees' remake of "Killing Me Softly with His Song" ..... since then continued success. She had also been following an acting career, appearing on the soap opera 'As The World Turns' and she then co-starred in 'Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit', followed by parts in 'King of the Hill', 'Hav Plenty', and 'Restaurant'. She has since combined these two roles with many soundtracks and roles in seven movies.

Love and (non) Marriage:

Her personal her life has been slightly more interesting ..... Her first affair was dating Wyclef Jean while she was in the Fugee's in a relationship that friends have called "complicated." However in 1996 she met the married Rohan Marley (the son of reggae legend Bob Marley) .... 'no marriage, no cry' seems to have been their motto and so they started a family. They have five children together and she also has now had a son, Micah, with another man. In August 2008, it was reported that Hill was now living with her mother and children in her hometown of South Orange, New Jersey.

Tax Matters:

Even though Hill's net worth is still reported to exceed $8.7 million from her record sales, tours and investments in Jamaica, Federal officials have charged her with willfully failing to file federal income tax returns. She is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate on June 29, 2012.

Racist Rumours:

The Internet was awash with rumours that Hill had reportedly said that "I would rather have my children starve, than have white people buy my record." This has since been denied and has now entered the snopes site as an "Urban Legend" and is apparently just a lie.

Update:

Guilty as charged M'lud - Sent to Prison for 3 months followed by three months under house arrest for 'tax evasion' ... she claimed in mitigation that she had intended to pay the taxes, but could not after withdrawing from public life and ending her music career to raise her children (of which she has rather a lot).

But she then spoilt the whole 'little miss poverty' act by then lashing out at whitey by adding that "I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them. I had an economic system imposed on me." ..... she means that same economic system that made her very rich, and from which she earned approx $1.8m (£1.2m) between 2005-07 (and on which she paid no taxes).

No doubt a ballad from the jail will be released shortly .....

Claire King (b. Claire Seed) is an English actress, best known for her roles in TV Soap Opera 'Emmerdale' and in 'Bad Girls'. She was schooled in Harrogate ladies college, but a teen girl rebellious streak meant that she became a punk rocker. She gravitated towards the music business, first as a disc jockey in a Leeds nightclub, and then as a singer in the groups 'Fidea' and 'later To Be Continued' as lead singer. Both bands failed to make any breakthroughs.

She moved to London, where she lived with the guitarist Geoff Bird (aka Cobalt Stargazer) of the group 'Zodiac Mindwarp' and it was at this time that she made her dancing debut in one of their promo videos. After this relationship ended she became a self confessed 'Rock n Roll Groupie'. This led to a number of 'short term' relationships, and her decision to become an actress, but she found there was already another actress using the name 'Claire Seed', so changed her name to 'King' based on her love of horse racing (the sport of kings ... yeah, right), and as a tribute to her favourite singer Elvis Presley.

She achieved her breakthrough in her late 20's with a long running role in the soap 'Emmerdale' followed immediately by another long running role in the drams 'Bad Girls'. When that ended in 2004, she has since failed to find another long term role, and has just had guest appearances in various TV shows, and has even written magazine articles. Her latest project, was to tour with the comedy play 'The Naked Truth' in 2010.

Oops Moments!

As you might expect from a confessed 'Rock n Roll Groupie', there have been a few moments ..... ignoring the subjects of the 'short term relationships', which in any case is only loosely documented, she has stated that while still in her late teens she had an affair with the singer 'Bob Geldof'. She also claims to have had a sexual fling with the footballer and actor 'Vinnie Jones'. She then seems to have developed a thing for small men, because she claims the jockey's Frankie Dettori and Kieran Fallon amongst her conquests .... maybe practising for a career in panto?

But the story that sealed her entry here was the drugs .... As is the way of these things these days, it appears to be her that has either given or sold the story to the Sunday Mirror newspaper. She stated that she had been blackmailed by an ex-boyfriend, who had threatened to sell pictures of her snorting coke and salacious stories about their sex life and her coke habit to the tabloids.

She stated to the newspaper that she only slept with him once, although they seem to have known each other for a while .... and that he was an ex business partner (they had a joint betting syndicate). The whole story drags on for a while, and includes him sending her gifts, cyber stalking and generally acting like a man scorned in love. She is reported to have made payments totalling £1,500 to stop him selling the story, but that he then demanded a further £8,000, with the threat that if she didn't pay, he would sell the video that he filmed in her Yorkshire home on his mobile phone, to the highest bidder. She immediately contacted the Sunday Mirror (like you would ... the police were obviously the last people you need to ring when being blackmailed )

In the story, she admitted to being a cocaine user, and gave them pictures of her chopping up two lines of cocaine on her living room table and rolling-up a twenty pounds note to snort it with. Of course the whole story goes on a bit, so to cut a long story short she confirmed that she had "taken cocaine very, very occasionally over the years, especially in my youth". But that she never got addicted. The man denied blackmail when he was approached, and no charges were ever laid.

As is also the way of these things, she soon recovered from her ordeal and she was quickly back giving interviews on how to loose weight after an ordeal, or something like that. Ah well, thats OK then.

Caroline Schwitzky is a twenty something model from Florida, who after graduating from Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High aged 18 in 2008, started entering and winning local beauty pageants. This luck continued and in February 2011 she entered and won the Miss Weston title, which is a qualifier for the Miss Florida title. So far, so much part of the common route to minor celebrity status, and a path trodden by so many of the girls on this thread.

She then went on to appear in a number of music videos e.g. DJ Kane - Linda Loca Mia .... TV work included the pilot for a new Charlies Angels series. Billboard work includes 'Mardi Gras Casino' and TV Adverts include 'Dolphin's Lotto Ticket' and 'Wachovia Bank'.

Oops Moment!

Shortly after winning the 'Miss Weston' crown, the wheels started to come off the fame wagon. As usual for these events, the participants have to declare any other titles or relevant events that they have won, or taken part in. So when an anonymous email was sent to the organizers of the pageant, Tel-Air productions, with photos and videos (which also re-surfaced on the net), showing that she was the winner of $2,000 at the 'Miss Exxxotica 2008' contest, there was bound to be trouble.

The issues were two fold, firstly Miss Schwitzky had failed to declare that she had held this title, and secondly, there were suggestions that this was a porn title (this isn't actually strictly the case. It was more a convention event). According to Schwitzky, she had disclosed her past modeling experiences to the contest judges, but omitted this particular event. She told the Miami Herald Schwitzky that, “Everybody has a past and every day I live with it. This is my journey. I know the consequences of my actions, but I want to be a role model and show young girls what not to do".

The organizers were meeting to decide what to do, when Schwitzky submitted her resignation. They later said that they were “Pretty sure this is a publicity stunt. We’ve been doing this for 50 years, and every now and then we’ll get a situation like this. We roll with the punches. The Miss Universe Pageant will not legitimize this with a statement. She can have her 15 minutes of fame."

Although Ms Schwitzky lost the ability to compete in Miss Florida, which feeds into the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, she apparently turned down an initial offer from Pl*yboy to pose nekked .... she later said that she did not regret anything she did, as it made her the person she that she is today. The suggestion on some reports is that she had been modelling clothes at the convention, and had only entered the contest to see if she could win the prize money .... Oops.

Addendum: She later fell pregnant and had a child, so it seems her chances of breaking through to celebdom have ended, although she still has a modelling page up, so may be working.

Tori Vance is a beauty queen winner .... she won her first adult title when aged 18, 'Miss Teen USA's Arizona champion' 2010, which she also took to the Atlantis hotel, Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas for the 2010 Miss Teen USA Pageant. She had also won the junior version of this same title in 2006 ..... she is also a girl with a bit of growing up to do. And nothing makes a young gal grow up quickly than a brush with the law.

In May 2012 she was driving through Hollywood in her Mini Cooper when she was pulled over by the police after she was spotted performing an illegal U-turn a little after 9 p.m. The officer allegedly detected signs of intoxication, so he had her leave her car and and attempt to perform a field sobriety test. After she failed, she was arrested for misdemeanor DUI and taken to the police station.

In California they have two scales for alcohol in cars, an adult and a minors level (which is much tighter), and as she is under age 21 she classes as a minor for motoring purposes, so when she registered a Blood Alcohol Content of just over 0.08, she easily broke the minors limit of just 0.01. The sentence this attracts is scaled e.g. Had her BAC been between 0.05 and 0.07, she would have been guilty of an infraction, which only carries a penalty of $100 for a first conviction plus a license suspension of one year. So her reading of 0.08 (if true) she will likely face the standard DUI rap, which is a misdemeanor. The possible penalty is three to five years of probation, a fine of up to $1,000, up to one year in county jail, an alcohol education class, and a court-ordered license suspension.

In reality, she will most likely cop a wet reckless plea bargain, which results in no jail, plus less probation and fines, although still the loss of her licence (which at her age is a big thing, or so I seem to recall). This is because there was no accident involved. However, one suspects that when news of this reaches the organizers of the various beauty pageants, she will be finding it tough to compete for a crown.

As we have seen before on this thread, its a dog eat dog life on the beauty circuit in the US.

Hazel Keener was born in Bettendorf, Iowa and when she was old enough, she chose route one to break in to fame .... yes she entered and won a national beauty contest sponsored by the Chicago Tribune. She was described as a blonde, 5 feet 6 inches in height, 128 lbs, with a slender, athletic build and chestnut brown hair and gray eyes.

She used her sucess to begin a film career in Hollywood and she started acting as a member of the Pasadena Community Players. In 1923 she was chosen as the prettiest woman in Hollywood by a committee of Hollywood painters, sculptors, writers, and composers, who were attending their annual musical comedy fete. In1924 she was chosen as a Wampas baby star, i.e. a young actresses destined for a stardom, which in fact was never achieved. Her career survived the onset of sound and went on into the TV era. In all she had 47 credited and uncredited roles starting in 1922, and only finishing in 1966 in the TV series 'Run For Your Life'. Her most memorable role is that of the College Belle in Harold Lloyd's 'The Freshman' in 1925, with most of her roles is B western movies, as a bit part player.

She died in 1979 in Pacific Grove, California, aged 74, of a heart attack.

Her Oops, is fairly minor for this thread, but I wanted a break from the drink and drug addled ladies of the modern era, and something from the age where a glimpse of stocking, was still considered shocking .... she didn't mind flashing her bits to the world when she was still a looker, and posed for artists, sculptors and photographers in various states of undress, all for the cause of art, and in the best possible taste of course. As a tribute to the beauty of Keener, the sculptor Finn Haaken Frolich sculpted a bust of her for the Norse club ... all this made her a rather risque lady for the times. Something she later kept rather quiet about when she later became a lay minister with the Church of Religious Science ....

Amanda Bynes is an American actress from Thousand Oaks, California, who started acting at the age of seven, appearing in a television advertisement for 'Buncha Crunch' sweets, while in her teens became a regular cast member of Nickelodeon's 'Figure It Out' and a regular cast member on 'All That' for seasons three through six. She had her own sketch comedy show, The Amanda Show between 1999 and 2002, and has since interspersed film and TV work. Since 2009 she has apparently been taking "time off", from both areas.

Some of the US celeb sites are suggesting that her 'time off' is driving her to ever more desperate publicity attempts .. hence the twitter pics and the breast baring (both pics below).

In an interview in December 2007, Bynes described how her parents taught her about alcohol .... but in 2012, after leaving a club in West Hollywood she sideswiped the rear-right quarter panel of a L.A. County Sheriff's car in West Hollywood while trying to overtake it. She refused to take sobriety tests, and was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk (DUI). She was later released on $5,000 bail. Apparently 'passing on the right.' which is what she was attempting is only allowed in limited circumstances, and so she may be charged with other traffic offences. Her attorney pleaded not guilty on her behalf when the initial hearing took place.

She has since insisted that she doesn't drink and drive on Twitter, tweeting, “Hey @BarackObama… I don’t drink. Please fire the cop who arrested me” .... so she wants the police officer to lose his job after she crashes into his car, while performing a possibly illegal maneuver, and refused to be tested for alcohol

Web site TMZ, apparently has photographs of multiple instances of her stumbling drunk out of the Greystone club in Hollywood. They also allegedly have video of her, visibly drunk, climbing into her car and driving away. She sounds like the sort of 'C lister' who needs a small lesson in humility

Finally, she doesn't seem to be learning from experience. According to a report from the Huffington Post she has continued pretty much in the same vein as the earlier report in June. They reported that in September this year, she was arrested after a hit-and-run incident and allegedly crashing into two cars and then fleeing the scene of the accident. Not content with this, she continued this streak of bad behavior when she was also charged with smoking a “drug pipe” and driving with a suspended license in Los Angeles .... she was allegedly smoking a “drug pipe” and cruising around Los Angeles for hours before her arrest.

She could now face additional charges of driving under the influence. Assuming that she only ends getting the hit and run charges, she could if she is convicted on the hit-and-run misdemeanor charges, she could face up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Lisa Robin Kelly is an actress born in Southington, Connecticut, who graduated from the Goodman School of Drama at Depaul University with a BFA in Acting in 1992. Success came easily, and she made her TV debut in a 1992 episode of 'Married... with Children' ironically entitled "Kelly Doesn't Live Here Anymore". She followed this up with appearances in such shows as 'The X files', 'Murphy Brown', and 'Charmed'.

Her career peak came as Laurie in the TV show ... 'That '70s Show'. After three years, she suddenly left the show; it was explained that her character had left to 'attend beauty school'. She briefly returned to the show in the fifth season in four episodes, but was then just as suddenly replaced with Christina Moore in the sixth season. Her career has almost entirely been in TV or straight to video output.

Of course thats not really what interests us here .... She has had one or two incidents that have attracted the interest of the press and web sites

Oops Moments:

Firstly she was arrested in August 2010 for drunk driving and was taken to a nearby jail where she spent the night behind bars. When the case came to court in November she pleaded guilty to one count of DUI. She was sentenced to 12 months of unsupervised probation, and ordered to pay a fine.

And secondly, on March 31, 2012, she was arrested on a felony charge of corporal injury upon a spouse, and was released on $50,000 bail. After her release on bail from the Lost Hills Police Station, she posted on Facebook a request for money from friends, as she had been 'wiped out'. She also claimed that her boyfriends injuries were self-inflicted. She later made public statements claiming that she was set up by her boyfriend who injured himself in an effort to frame the her as a domestic abuser.

She then displayed her mastery of the social media by 'tweeting' that she is "relieved the nightmare is over". ..... On May 12, 2012, it was reported that the LA County DA had declined to file any charges, with her boyfriends refusal to co-operate with the authorities playing a major role in the decision .... phew, close one!

Marie McDonald (b. Cora Marie Frye) was an American singer and actress born in Burgin, Kentucky. She had show business in her blood as her mother was a Ziegfeld Follies girl and her grandmother an operatic singer (her father was a prison warder at Leavenworth prison) .... her parents divorced, but her mother remarried and the 'family' moved to New York. There was no objections raised when she started down the traditional routes of competing in beauty pageants and modeling aged just 15 (she lied) .... she had some success winning the "Miss Yonkers" and "The Queen of Coney Island" titles, among others. In 1939 she was crowned "Miss New York," but subsequently lost at the "Miss America" pageant.

So I guess it was no surprise when she landed a showgirl role in the 1940 Broadway production of 'Earl Carroll's Vanities'. She moved to Hollywood to develop a career in show business, however she continued to work for the owner of the Broadway theatre as a showgirl at his Sunset Boulevard nightclub and still modelling ... retract that eek, she was in fact a singer, and soon got work with Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra on his radio show, and other big bands, and she still modelled, including some nudes under her maiden name.

In 1942, she was put under contract by Universal Studios and started a film career, which probably highlighted when she costarred with Gene Kelly in 'Living in a Big Way' in 1947. But its fair to say that her film career was a little inconsistent and her last film role in a 24 movie career was in 1963, in the film, 'Promises! Promises!', a movie many here will know as it starred her opposite a naked Jayne Mansfield. Despite her obvious talents, and she wasn't a bad actress either, she was better known for her hour glass figure than for any of film roles.

After losing out to Judy Holliday for the lead role in "Born Yesterday", she never got another break and she ended up more often on the road doing bus-and-truck singing/dancing shows than anything else. Needless to say her personal life was tumultuous.

Marriages (one to seven)

She had married for the first time in 1940 but this marriage quickly ended. Her second marriage, to her agent Victor Orsatti, lasted just four years. In all, she married seven times, including twice to millionaire Harry Karl (who later married Debbie Reynolds) She suffered multiple miscarriages before adopting two children and giving birth to a daughter... her last (and sixth) husband, Donald F. Taylor, who was a producer who had occasionally acted under the name Don Taylor, committed suicide after her death.

Extramaritals:

She had affairs with the often married Eddie Fisher and Michael Wilding (both ex-husbands of Elizabeth Taylor), and she also managed to find time to become one of mobster Bugsy Siegel's mistresses.

Other Notable Moments:

The tabloids regularly reported on her rocky romances, and car accidents. By this stage she was a heavy drinking alcoholic and drug taker, and this led to frequent skirmishes with the law and more than a few nervous breakdowns, and an escape from an Australian psychiatric clinic where she had been committted while on tour.

It all ended when in 1965, and she was now entirely dependent of both the drugs and alcohol, she was found dead ... it wasn't classed as suicide, but as a drunken overdose. After her last husband killed himself, her children were brought up by Harry Karl and his then wife, Debbie Reynolds (who had been married to Eddie Fisher) .... its a strange old world.
