That which once was acceptable has been left behind. I am glad. However my troublesome sense of fair play does force me to admit that you have a point, in that we should not rush to impose our current standards as a yardstick to judge people who were writing in another time and another place; it isn't fair.

I know this is off the topic but it illustrates the point. The Ghost Breakers (1940) with Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard is a fine romamntic comedy with ghosts and a film I really like. But it has one particular scene near the beginning where the Hope character is talking to his black valet (played by Willie Best) which always makes me cower with pain because the dialogue is so extravagantly beyond the limits of what is socially acceptable now. But it was acceptable then. Bob Hope didnt have two horns and cloven feet; he wasn't a standard bearer for the KKK. One shouldn't condemn him on the strength of that one scene.

However, that one scene is enough reason why, fine film though it is, The Ghost Breakers is unlikely to be shown on any channel in the UK anytime in the foreseeable future and perhaps never again.

I can't think of any big screen adaptation of TV sitcoms that were worth watching. Not even Dad's Army.

I crease up when I say the scene in which Alan Partridge looses his trousers & knickers escaping out of a window & the police see him outside he tucks his meat & two veg between his legs... then a photographer shoots him from behind! L.O.L!
