Tina Russell was born 23 September 1948 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, to John H. and Margaret Ditzler Mintzer. She grew up in Amish country and graduated from high school there in 1966. Her senior photo shows a mature brunette looking more like a future nurse than a porn star. By the late 1960's Tina had married her childhood sweetheart, Jason, and the two of them were living "in a Brooklyn Heights brownstone and seemed like a typical urban young married couple". Away from their hometown, and unknown to their parents though, Tina and Jason had become porn stars and swingers.

Tina's first adult film was released in 1967, although the Williamsport city directories of 1968-1970 still showed her living at home and listed as a student. According to rumour, Tina entered the industry not only because of her exhibitionist tendencies, but also because "she liked big dicks and [her husband] Jason only had a small dick. She particularly loved black guys with big dicks."

According to Tina: “I did not have any idea what was involved in a pornographic film. In the beginning, I had no type of contact with any part of the business. My husband, Jason, had only seen a couple of eight-millimetre loops years before while in the army. Anyway, my friend Suzanne, who had done some films, suggested the idea of us making loops because she really liked Bob Wolfe, the director… So as relaxed about nudity as we had always been, by ourselves and with our friends, we decided sure, why not? I assumed that we would make love – only it would be for a camera. So Bob Wolfe shot a ten-minute loop… So that was it! A few kisses, a lot of tongue action, some fondling, and a lot of spread shots. All I had to remember was to be sure not to look at the camera and to be sure to keep my legs spread directly to the camera.”

The industry in the late 1960’s was an extremely amateur and at times chaotic affair. Tina Russell: “One night it was working in a dirty studio in the Forty-second Street district doing a soft-core, S/M job. The next day, it was a short requiring a half-hour to an hour of making love for a hard-core fill-in, to spice up a film shot years before. Or maybe a job requiring only straight acting, not even nudity, in a higher-budget production.”

Harry Reems, future star of ‘Deep Throat’, recalled meeting Tina when he arrived to shoot his first ever loop in 1970: “Tina was dressed like a hooker – in a short, short ribbed maroon miniskirt and a black pullover jersey and high heels. And no bra. Then a handsome bearded young man joined us. ‘Hi,’ he said, ‘I’m Jason. Tina’s husband.’ My erection dropped like an express elevator… I was confused and embarrassed… Jason laughed. ‘Relax, man! You’re trying to ask me if it’s okay to fuck my wife. Of course you can fuck my wife.’ It started out with Tina kissing me… She was trying to tell me, ‘Don’t be scared. I’m going to help you all I can’… Tina did a deliriously good job on me, and I erupted right on schedule.”

According to Fred Lincoln, who also entered the porn industry the same time as Reems: “Tina never cared about who Jason fucked, and Jason never cared about who Tina fucked – they were genuine swingers. I mean, I went over to their house once and fucked Tina while Jason was eating dinner! Tina adored Jason. She did everything for him. And she was a natural sex person. So the business didn’t bother her when they both got into it.”

Tina Russell: “It is not difficult for me to let myself go and to be my character in a film. I do not want to be a great, well-known actress; it’s too much hassle. Besides, I love what I am doing. I am a porn star!”

In a 1974 interview with Playboy she said: "Friends should make love, it helps friendships grow. People worry a little about vaginitis, because the guys can transmit it from girl to girl, but we seldom worry about V.D. because everyone knows everyone else. Anyway, there are only seven or eight people we're willing to fuck on film. I never knew love until I met Jason. Whenever I have to fantasize in a movie, I relate it to him."

Over the next few years she made over 45 movies, the most famous of which was 'Whatever Happened To Miss September?' (1973). The movie combined old footage from past Tina loops and new material creating one of the great classics of early 1970's US porn. Although she refused to do bestiality, S/M or have anal sex in front of the camera, she was a natural and quickly became one of the most popular porn stars of the decade.

Both Tina and Jason continued with their open marriage as their porn careers grew but she always claimed to be incapable of loving anyone other than her husband. "My husband and I often shared our love with another female or male or couple. But it was always a spontaneous interaction with close friends, and not a planned party... I am an insecure person and cannot trust many people fully enough to abandon myself to them. As a result I have always preferred a one-to-one relationship."

In 1975 Tina became the first porn star to appear at the Harmony Burlesque, in New York, where she would strip and take part in live sex shows. Around this time she also wrote two books, one on sex organs, and the other on porn stars. In them she outlined her sexual philosophy: "I have spent much of my life searching for the transcendental orgasm... but it has been a search for quality through selectivity... not quantity... A transcendental orgasm is totally and completely letting go. You are completely with yourself, your orgasm and your partner."

By 1976 Jason Russell had moved behind the camera. According to Fred Lincoln though: “Once Jason Russell started making money and directing, he was not so nice to Tina. And she adored him. She did everything for Jason. Tina never cared who he fucked, but Jason abandoned Tina when he fell in love with Jean Jennings.” Jean Jennings was 17 when she began making porn films.

Fred Lincoln: “Jason Russell fell in love with Jean Jennings, and you know what? He became a jerk, not a prick. Everybody fell in love with her. I fell in love with her when I first met her… Jean was almost six feet tall, and she was the most beautiful creature! Who the hell knew she was a little kid? And then Jean Jennings went to Italy… Maybe a year before Jason hooked up with Jean, Toby Ross did this film starring Tina Russell called ‘Not Just Another Woman’. Toby had billboards on Broadway and on Sunset Boulevard with Tina’s picture on them. Tina – she was gorgeous. Oh, she was beautiful! Jason really upset Tina because when he fell in love with Jean, he made Tina work as Jean’s make-up person. What the fuck was that? She just fell apart. She just couldn’t deal with it. It broke her heart; it really did. And she just hit the bottle. And drank herself to death.”

Tina Russell entered the adult industry because she was an exhibitionist and an idealist, and quickly become the best-known pre-Linda Lovelace porn actress in the States. She eventually developed cirrhosis of the liver, and withered away. Tina died aged 32, on 18 May 1981.
