I have just come back from a vacation with my family in the USA and we all very into The History Channel and Discovery Channel.

Lots of programms about how things are built such as planes, tanks, warships etc.

Pawn Stars about a family Pawn shop in Las Vegas....more adictive than it sounds.....a bit like antiques roadshow with a sprinkle of attitude.

Myth Busters, great cheap science to get kids interested.

A show about taking someones broken down junk classic car and doing a full restoration on it before the surprise reveal at the end.

The only problem we had was the number of advert sections, they even run adverts after the titles and during the credits. The BBC is woth something.

As an American, I must confess that I have no idea what 'Lost' is about. I've got a sneaking suspicion that even the shows writers/producers have no real idea what the show is about. Americans have a tendency to confuse complication with sophistication. Just because something is esoteric doesn't necessarily mean it's intelligent.

Yeah they have some good programs, but you'll soon get sick of them as they get repeated over and over and over and over and over .....

As an American I just can't understand why we have so many damn reality shows. I've never seen an episode of Survivor. But really, who are some of these people and why should I care about them? Who is Julianna & Bill?

I'm also not understanding why some shows are ending at 1 minute past the hour or half hour. Is this to intentionally screw up DVR's?

One show on the BBC that I wish we could see in it's entirety is Top Gear. We get a chopped up version on BBC America that is limited to 1 hour and has commercials.

They are cheap to make and people watch them. (No, I can't explain why. I hate reality shows too.)

Yes. Also they think that if they can "force" you to stay on their channel past when the other networks' shows start when you watch live, you'll stay and watch their next show. (And yes, the broadcast networks are out of touch with reality. Note that they think they can con us into believing their directed, influenced and carefully edited "reality" shows are real.) (Then again, a lot of people do think they are "real" so....)

I think one of the best TV series currently being broadcast is 'Family Guy'. It's made by Fox in the US and I only wish British TV was producing something similar - but they haven't.

One of the UK Freeview channels shows repeats of Top Gear, chopped and with commercials (probably 4 or 5 ad breaks) and the editing is fairly brutal at times, but from memory, I don't think they miss any of the "important" bits. Sometimes they seem to chop a bit of the celebrity interviews or the post-road test chat. Of course, it depends how many ad breaks you have on BBC America!

I think the channel is called 'Dave'.

One thing that shocked me about american television was the violence. loads and loads of explicit head smashing violence yet i never saw a tit. not one. even the nip slip scene in highlander was censored!!

in a country where janet jacksons tit at the superbowl caused a massive moral outcry the same people are prepared to have the most explicit violence on thier TV's with no outcry whatsoever. strange.

The above channels, and others like Nat Geog, make inferior tabloid documentaries mutilated by over-editing and annoying upbeat music. PBS makes the only US documentaries I can watch.
