Let me tell you where UK taxpayers money goes because I see it. I work in the building trade almost exclusively on new housing. Government and local authority regs mean that a building firm given planning permission will be expected to build about 20% of their stock for a housing association. This will be privately financed associations who rent out housing. Although some of these will be rent to buy the vast majority go to people on the housing list. 99.9% of these are unemployed. Why? Because the housing associations are guaranteed their money paid directly by the DSS. Of that 99.9% 99.9% wil be in the 20-35 year old age bracket. They have a life of ease in front of them. Rent paid, no pressure to get a job. I have seen it every day of my life for the last ten years, this is not hyperbole. As a rule your average skanker will be seen stood by their front door smoking/drinking/talking on their mobile at the crack of 10am. Many have new cars. (I've seen one couple get a 4 bed house and have two 4 wheel drive cars. One brand new, one a year old.) As a landscaper once said. 'I'd love to have a house like that given me and a car as new as that but it won't happen because I work.' It's just a small insight into the vast amount of money UK goverments waste and I stand by the idea that someone earning ten times what I earn pays enough tax if he pays the same rate as I do.

I am working class US. OK sales tax so you want us to funnel our tax money through the businesses of this nation and entrust them to properly pay the Taxes? Hey if I can become a tax collector/inspector this may not be bad cause the moment this is enacted businesses are going to paying those guys off like it is no tomorrow. With a flat tax if all the income is to the top and you will be cutting their taxes and the lower income people won't have anything to contribute cause they cant afford to buy anything, who is going to do things like fund the military which is our biggest discretionary expense? You know we not trying to stop fighting any wars no matter who says we are, not to mention any of the stuff we do.

Polemics are fine 57, but not reality. Reality is that someone has to pay for the Government spending. Reality is that firms will go where the costs are lowest, reality is that people will work overtime if it profits them and not the Government. Reality is that Gordon Brown raided the pensions of people who had paid into Pension Funds to pay for his spending spree, just as he encouraged the banks to lend lend lend and then blamed them in 2008.

Noel Edmunds and Jim Davidson may not go as their market is British, but others can just piss off. And piss off those who pay more just means that the rest of us suffer.

Ultimatewarlord - Sadly private landlords no longer get the rent direct from the DHSS. Some civil servant in the wrote a policy paper suggesting that it would enhance the life skills of people on the Soc if there were given their rent directly. It would help them to learn budgeting skills. Yup you may guess the result. Tenants everywhere spending their windfall on drink, drugs and things they needed because they'd already spent their dosh on drink and drugs.

The VAT Inspectors have more power than the Police here. They can search your property at any time, without a warrant, they can examine your bank accounts, accounts in and payments and if they find an error have the power of arrest and far higher penalties for VAT crimes than minor offences like manslaughter of grievous bodily harm. Any official here would have a problem with taking bribes, they too get checked on every job and they also have snap audit checks on their work!

In the States we got these people called "lobbyists" and what they do is pay off politicans in order to do things like curtail the powers of the enforcement agencies that may meddle in the affairs of the party that the lobbyist is working on behalf of.

I partly agree, but the recent Tory proposals to give wealthier pensioners a serious bashing seem astonishingly unfair to me. The fuel allowance is simply part of this country's second rate pension package and eveyone should be entitled to it. Then there's the idea of ripping off people's homes to pay for all forms of care. On this basis, the people who have spent their lives freeloading, really do get everything for nothing if they need this help. Is that fair? And finally, there is a substantial group of women who have had their pensions taken away by the State, simply because some moron civil servant decided to re-set the retirement ages without thinking things through properly. I belive this is currently heading towards a judicial review, but it doesn't make thing any better.

I wish I liked politicans, but I don't. Few if any seem in touch with ordinary people.
