Why/how did we choose our nicknames?

The 'what are you listening to?' thread made me come up with the idea for this thread (well, a few ales too) so I was just wondering why and/or how we chose the nicknames we use on this site and generally.

I do use two nicknames (not on this site!) 'Manny Fagnett' which simply swap the first letters of each word and I also use 'Bum Farto' which really is a person, in fact a fire chief from a small town somewhere in the U.S who got done for drugs.

Found my nickname in a rather simple way: 'The Leprechaun' is the title of the Chick Corea CD I heard while registering at VEF.

Mine is a type of freshwater sportfish in US/Canada (although one might mistake the term for something only females have).

Mine is an anagram of spitalhouse. I randomly rearranged the letters and ended up with ......... spitalhouse.
