Way late to the party. I switched my office to mac around the first part of 2008, when the current OSX was leopard. I do almost everything VEF on a mac. I was paying to have a full time IT employee to keep the network and computers up and running. After finding out that I had to buy a new scanner because old scanner --which was fine--wouldn't work with vista that I had to upgrade to because my subscription based software --that was no different from 1993 --was no longer supported. I quit. I went and bought 3 macs.
Then the next day I bought a book on macs. Sometimes they were deceptively simple. I was able to network the three by clicking a few boxes. Then we got a few more, and a few more. I haven't spent anything on IT in a few years. I have a mac mini that we run windows on for those programs that have to be windows native. The only time I have trouble with a computer is usually when I run windows on it with boot camp. We haven't had to replace a computer in years. All of that said, I'm starting to see some of the issues I used to have with windows popping up in mac. I think Mountain Loin is really unnecessary. It's starting to have issues like windows did. E.G. I have to go into the settings to allow it to download software that isn't on itunes or apple approved. While not a big deal, I never had to do this before. And it WAS one of the benefits of having a mac was not having these tiny issues. I occasionally start seeing that some program I've used for fucking eons is no longer supported by mountain lion. I don't like being forced to upgrade when it's not necessary. I still have my compaq from the early 1990s that was my first pro computer for business and to this day it still runs the same programs that I ran before just fine. If the subscription/licensed software never changed, I wouldn't have either. I may sound cynical, but I think Apple has caught on to "make them buy another" after a while. I like her too.

I have only had one computer in my lifetime. A Dell Inspiron 1545 with Windows Vista. I will have to get a new computer next year because Microsoft says they will stop supporting Vista with Windows updates by April of 2017. I don't like the look of computers now. The keys keep getting smaller, and I am not going to pay through the nose for an Apple computer. Since I only use a computer for e-mail, occasionally buying items online and surfing the web why spend a bundle of money for an Apple.

I built my computer (desktop) as I dislike laptops. It's not as hard as it sounds as it's just a matter of buying the components and fitting them together into the case. If any components wear out or break down, (such as the processor) then they can be replaced. The catch is that when you buy a replacement processor, it's not going to fit your existing main board because the socket it fits into will be of a different (updated) type. This then means buying a new main board as well (which might also necessitate buying other components such as memory sticks if the slots for those have also changed). It's still cheaper than buying a whole new PC in the long run though and you can add more (or replace) the hard drive if you want more space to store your data as time goes by.
Not sure if this makes me a Nerd or a Dork or a Geek. |

I am a diehard Mac user whose family (to my knowledge) only ever owned one PC clone, the Gateway 2000 running Windows ME [1999-2005]...
I've used Macintosh since 1992, which means 25 years of Steve / Ashton getting rich off me. Seriously, the girl who had the red t-shirt on the beginning of this thread looks somewhat like Jordan Carver trying to impress Steve / Ashton and bed down with him. |
