Les Quatre Cents Coups (1959)
Trailer 14-year-old Antoine (Jean-Pierre Léaud) lives in Paris with his neglecting mother Gilberte (Claire Maurier) and stepfather Julien (Albert Rémy). Antoine and his best friend René (Patrick Auffay) often play truant and allow themselves pranks for which Antoine ends up punished all the time. After he's caught plagiarizing Balzac by his teacher, Antoine decides to quit school. In order to finance his life away from home, he steals a typewriter from his stepfather's company with the intention to sell it. But the plan doesn't work and more trouble follows. The 400 Blows is one of the founding films of the French New Wave. François Truffaut went on to direct four successful sequels. A convincingly told story with excellent performers and beautiful scenes of 1950s Paris. |

'Go' (1999)
I have seen this movie once before, when it was originally released, way back when I was a callow teenager with a beautiful head of hair, and it's amazing/hilarious to me how 'nineties' it seems on second viewing nearly 20 years later (Glow sticks! Dyed spiky hair! Ecstacy! Pagers! Trancy drum and bass! Big puffy yellow jackets! Blurry camera cut-aways!). The story is the typical 'you wouldn't understand, this movie isn't for you, grandad' kind of affair, which is always amusing to watch in hindsight, as the youngsters in this movie will now be in their 40s and inevitably criticising so-called millennials for the exact same reason their parents criticised them (this music is rubbish, where's the tune - back in my day etc etc etc). I watched this movie because I love Sarah Polley (artistically, of course), but there are some other great performances - hilarious cameos by William Fichter and Jane Krakowski, and a Brit actor who I remember from the tv show 'Grange Hill' when I was a kid, who plays a kinda cheeky cockney chappy, and there is one hilarious scene of him finding a gun and playing with it, with an adorably puppy-dog like British attitude to firearms ('How do I find out if it's loaded?? *Keeps flipping gun around, pulling at parts of it*'). Despite the achingly modish (ie now extremely dated) nature of it, it's a very entertaining watch because the stories tie together quite nicely (although some of the character's motivations seem a little off to me - like *spoiler alert spoiler alert* when the otherwise decent-seeming gay tv actor almost decides to bludgeon a girl to death just to avoid a slightly awkward situation), and the acting in it is of an excellent standard, and I would even say, occasionally brilliant. It craps all over 'Human Traffic' anyway, the British version released the same year, which, if given the choice between watching again or being shot in the face, I'd take the bullet and put my trust in modern medicine. |

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
www.imdb.com/title/tt3501632/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue80QwXMRHg The last of this years mega Marvel movies and it was excellent. Mixing up aspects of both Planet Hulk and Contest of Champions with bucket-loads of Norse mythology, including Hela, the Valkyries, Fenris and Surtur the fire demon and the obligatory Stan Lee cameo appearance as well as a splendidly over the top Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster Director Taika Waititi almost stealing the show as Korg, old Marvel fans may remember his race as Thor's very first foes The Stone Men from Saturn way back in Journey Into Mystery #83 (1962) Led Zep's awesome "Immigrant Song" really suits the tempo of the film and nicely sets up the opening battle scenes, this film is a lead up to next year's Avengers: Infinity War, there are two end title sequences I saw, one that possibly sets up the next Avengers film and hints that Loki did a bit of last minute thievery and a final just for fun clip with Jeff Goldblum.

In Norse mythology it's Loki who leads the Army of the Dead against the Aesir at Ragnarok and Hel is His daughter...

Surtur looks excellent though, and the play within the film which features cameos from Sam Neill as Odin and Matt Damon as Loki was a great idea.
