100 years of Navy medicine in San Diego

A long article with a couple of sidebars and an appended history concerning the hospital (which I will always think of as Balboa Naval Hospital, not San Diego Naval Medical Center...)

One hundred years ago, according to Navy lore, the United States entered World War I and opened a troop training camp in San Diego, complete with a budding naval dispensary.The site was Balboa Park, where buildings left over from a 1915 exposition were awaiting new uses.
The dispensary has grown into a crown jewel of Navy medicine and is celebrating its centennial this year.
It’s now a 6,600-employee economic powerhouse for the city. The hospital trains most of the Navy’s doctors, supplies medical staff for the battlefield and cares for 125,000 patients around the region.

I live in a shithole on the outskirts of Manchester.

The pigeons fly over upside down because there is nothing worth shitting on.

There are so many houses with their windows boarded up that the window cleaner has a sander.

Lets put it into perspective. In a posh area, if someone walked down the street with their todger hanging out of their trousers, someone would call the Police.
In my town, if you walked down the street with your knob out you would have a pair of lips around it within 30 seconds, sadly not necessarily Female.

Oh, and I live in the 'nicer' middle-class area.

America's Most Charitable Cities

June 13, 2017 – When it comes to charity, not all U.S. cities are equal, according to a newly released study conducted by Charity Navigator, America’s largest charity evaluator. The study shows that San Diego's philanthropic community leads the nation, Houston's charities raise more money, and Cleveland's charities are richer.

In its study, Charity Navigator compared the median performance and size of the largest nonprofits in the 30 largest metropolitan markets

But we still can't get something done to really help the homeless, unlike some other cities...

San Diego among top 5 choices for conventions

When meeting planners are scouting where to hold their next conference, their first choice is invariably Chicago, Orlando or Washington, D.C., but San Diego is a close fourth, based on a recently released survey of 40 North America markets.STR, formerly Smith Travel Research, conducted the survey of meeting planners as part of their annual study to assess their preferences when organizing meetings large and small.
Among North American planners, 67 percent included Chicago and Orlando as their top choices for meeting destinations, with 66 percent citing Washington, D.C. San Diego was the choice among 64 percent of those responding to the survey, followed by Las Vegas at 62 percent, STR said.
The results closely parallel a ranking produced earlier this year by Cvent, an event management software firm that tracks conventions in 5,000 cities. In that ranking, Orlando was also at the top of the list, followed by Las Vegas, Chicago, Atlanta and San Diego. Washington, D.C. was sixth.

Of course, this result could change over the next few years, if San Diego cannot get approval to add an extension to the existing facility. The convention center does not want an annex some distance away, which is something that the 'Soccer City' proposl wanted...
