I mentioned this on the Conspiracies thread - when Kennedy died I was out with my mate looking for bikes to steal - we had no luck so it was long faces all round that evening.

Default Elvis Presley

I was in the Army stationed in Germany at the time, we only had one American radio station AFRS.

I was driving into work the morning of Aug. 17th 1977, the whole way in the radio played Elvis, Elvis, Elvis. Never once did they mention that he died.

I get into the shop about 6:00AM, turn on the radio, make coffee. More Elvis. The platoon comes filtering in, I step out in the motor pool and it sounded like an Elvis concert. Back in the office I ask "What's with all the Elvis music? They say "Didn't you hear, Elvis died yesterday!" Could have knocked me over with a feather! I went to the PX & bought every Elvis album they had, @ $4.50 each. I wish I had them now.

I remember this like it was yesterday. But the King lives forever through his music.

Default JFK & Others

I was 9 years old when JFK was assassinated. I was in school and it came over the P.A. system that the President had died. I think we were all too young to understand what had happened. Someone looked outside and said "The flag is only half way up." The teacher then explained about flying the flag at half mast. I think it flew at half mast for the next month. I remember Walter Cronkite on the news, almost breaking down himself when he announced that Kennedy had died. This to is forever etched into my memory. Our first indoctrination of the medias over saturation of a tragedy.

I remember when Winston Churchill died to, but I was young and didn't really know who he was. If I knew then what I know now, I think his death would have really effected me.

Also remember when Lennon was shot.

When the space shuttle exploded, I thought it was so senseless. I never understood just what we are looking for up there. Wasting money and lives.

I remember the moon landing, one of the few nights I was allowed to stay up that late.

When Princess Di. died they interrupted TV "We interrupt this broadcast for a news bulletin." Then there was a long pause. The first thing I thought was that somebody shot the President.

Then 9/11. I remember Dan Rather stuttering & stammering away "Maybe, we think, could be, possibly." A tragedy for sure, but I couldn't help but think "get your stuff together, THEN tell us what's going on!" I haven't watched TV since.

I was 13 years-old at home in my bedroom, vegging out to an easy listening radio station whilst trying to avoid mowing the lawn when the news broke out. I didn't think too much about it except that he was that olde and fat Hound Dog Dude.

I was annoyed that I was missing my favourite programme but my parents were very upset. We were British and had still to find out what sort of people the Kennedeys really were. It came quite hard because we really believed in them.
I was six. I came home from school (1st grade) and walked into my house. The news story was on the TV, and I could tell that my mother had been crying. She immediately told me to go to my room and stay there, (I guess she didn't want to explain to me why she was crying).
All I knew at the time was that , for a reason unknown to me, I was being punished by being sent to my room.
I didn't get it. In my mind, I was being punished for something I had nothing to do with.

Try telling that to some of the people on the Conspiracies thread.

When Reagan was shot, I was home alone, drinking a few beers, watching the soap opera Another World, when the network broke in with a bulletin. I thought, "Hmm, maybe the President got shot."

And I learned about it here on VEF, via the R.I.P Thread....I'm not sure what that says about me.
