Default Where Were You When........

I was listening to Radio Caroline here in the UK in the week and the programme on air was the Elvis Presley Hour. The subject was the day Elvis died and the show aired various newscasts from around the world and interviews with celebrities of the day in reaction to the news that Elvis had died. At 10.25pm on August 16th 1977, the story was first broken in the UK when ITN News At Ten presenter Reginald Bosanquet announced that there were unconfirmed reports that Elvis had died. The news show finished at 10.30pm and before the start of the next programme there was a newsflash confirming reports that Elvis had indeed died.

While listening to this programme, I recalled watching this news broadcast from 1977 and where I was when watching it. I was an 11 year old at my nan's house waiting for my folks to come and pick me up as they were having a night out. When my parents arrived I told them someone called Elvis Presley had died and who was he?

So it got me thinking, how about a thread where fellow VEFers recall where they were/first heard about significant/insignificant/personal events? It could be anything; Where were you when you first heard about the moon landing/ Mandela released/9-11/Berlin Wall etc? Where were you when you bought your first porn mag/ first kiss/ first sex/ first divorce etc. Anything that will make people recall their own personal experience of the topic in matter.

So to start the ball rolling....

Where were you when you first heard that Elvis Presley had died?

I honestly don't remember where I was when I heard about Elvis. The one that stands out to me is the death of John Lennon. I was in room 206 of Robinson Hall at St. Bonaventure University watching Monday Night Football. The local ABC affiliate, WKBW, ran a runner at the bottom of the screen saying that Lennon had been shot. Before the runner had finished, Howard Cosell announced to the audience that Lennon was dead.

Here's a clip of the announcement.

I was having my Monday morning jollies to the sound of Radio 2 when they announced Lennons death.

I was 11 years old.
I'd nicked my mum's "Elvis' 40 Greatest Hits" LP and was listening to Teddy Bear when for the first time ever, the LP stuck and played the same bit over and over.
I quietly packed the LP away so I wouldn't get the blame, turned on the TV and the breaking news was that Elvis had died.
A bit odd.

When Lennon's death was announced I was in the middle of writing a paper on the Gold Standard and British financial policy between the wars - at the time I envied the ex Beatle.

When Princess Di snuffed it I was sitting in a Transit van outside the Burger King in Sauchiehall St Glasgow with the rest of the band - post gig it was our habit to go there , get something to eat and watch the street fights which are always particularly good and vicious at that time of night - especially if you get a multiple bitch fight!.

Switched on the radio and the announcement came on that we were minus a princess - I can't say it spoiled my appetite.

Elvis I was on my way to work when I learned
Lenon I was driving my car when the flash info
announced the nightmare, which put me in a bad mood for the rest of the day, but one that I was most frozen blood, is the announcement of the death of Jacques Brel, it was October 9, 1978, that day I felt losing my father again.

Default ...when Stalin died?

I was at home. My father told us. Not on the same day, of course - it could have been a week or two weeks later, but for some reason I never asked. If we had known then what we know today, our emotions may have been different, but at the time, we were sad
