U.S. Marshals auctioning seized 'Batmobile'
foxnews.com By Gary Gastelu July 17, 2020 The replica was seized from convicted Medicare fraudster, Ryan Sheridan The U.S. Marshals Service is auctioning a replica of the Caped Crusader's car, along with two other famous movie-mobile lookalikes that were among the assets seized from convicted Medicare fraudster, Ryan Sheridan. The former owner of an Ohio drug and alcohol rehab center is currently serving a seven-and-a-half year prison sentence and owes over $24 million in restitution. Along with the Tim Burton-era Batmobile, which is based in a 1995 Chevrolet Caprice Classic, the auction includes a DeLorean customized to look like the one featured in “Back to The Future” and a 1959 Cadillac converted into ECTO-1 from "Ghostbusters.” The auction is being held on Aug. 1 at Skipco Auto Auction in Canal Fulton, Ohio, where only 120 people will be allowed in attendance due to social distancing measures, but bids will also be accepted online. This isn't the only recent case of a would-be Batman who's been on the wrong side of the law. In February, an $850,000 replica of the car driven by Ben Affleck's Batman was impounded in Moscow for not being road-legal. Last edited by ghost2509; November 22nd, 2020 at 06:50 AM.. |

Burbank adds 'Batman:Hush' Statue in the city's AMC Walkway
yahoo.com Bruce Haring Nov 20.2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScOyaoQZLL4 A colossal Batman statue based on the Batman: Hush character design by DC artist, publisher, and chief creative officer Jim Lee has been placed in Burbank’s AMC Walkway pedestrian area. The “Visit Burbank” organization in partnership with DC brought the bronze statue to the area. Lee’s design from his 2002 Batman comics run was reimagined in 3D form by digital sculptor Alejandro Pereira Ezcurra at Burbank’s American Fine Arts Foundry and Fabrication. The final statue measures seven-and-a-half feet tall and weighs 600 pounds. The statue arrives shortly after a second round of layoffs were announced at DC, with speculation swirling that the comics line may be in trouble. The shrinking publishing unit faces AT&T’s WarnerMedia's Studios & Networks division cuts that may see its iconic characters like Batman confined to film and other media. Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 on March 30, 1939. The Caped Crusader has been depicted in comic books, Saturday morning cartoons, multiple television series, video games, theme parks and experiences, toys, collectibles, and apparel and lifestyle products, as well as blockbuster animated and live-action films. |

Strangest Batmobile Quest: Man orders raid from Sheriff friend over his Batmobile order
autoevolution.com Elena Gorgan July 31, 2022 The gist of the story, as uncovered by Dan Noyes of ABC 7 of Chicago is that a super-rich real estate dude ordered himself a Batmobile replica and then tried to use his connections to get the builder in trouble. Unhappy with the change in status, which delayed the delivery of the vehicle by as much as two years, he called his sheriff friend and had him raid the shop, bringing criminal charges to the owner. The shop in question is the famous Fiberglass Freaks from Logansport, Indiana, the only shop licensed by DC Comics to build 1996 Batmobile replicas. That would be the first car the Dark Knight ever drove in the ‘60s television series. The original was based on the Lincoln Futura concept and was built by none other than legendary car customizer George Barris. Batmobiles have gone through countless changes along the years, but the ‘60s original one holds steady to the title of being the most recognizable and, to fans of a certain age, the most popular. Even comedian and known car collector Jeff Dunham owns one such Batmobile, and Fiberglass Freaks helped him restore it. Fiberglass Freaks sells these replicas for prices upwards of $200,000, and demand is very high at all times. Real estate agent Sam Anagnostou, who lives in Atherton, California, ordered one for $210,000, and paid for it in monthly payments. At one point, shop owner Mark Racop explains, Anagnostou missed a $20,000 installment and “disappeared” for almost nine months, with no possibility of being reached. Because this is standard policy due to demand, Anagnostou’s order was moved at the bottom of the list, while other commissions were moved up. That’s when things got really dramatic, Racop says. Anagnostou was fuming when he heard that his order had been delayed by one and a half or even two years, and “exploded.” He did more than just explode, though, according to the investigative report: he went to the Atherton police and filed a report, but no charges were brought against the shop. Anagnostou then filed a lawsuit against the shop with the San Mateo County District Attorney, but the action was dismissed on the basis that it should have been filed in Indiana. Anagnostou then used his “call a friend” card: San Mateo County Sheriff Carlos Bolanos was called upon to intervene. The Sheriff dispatched four people (a lieutenant, a sergeant and two deputies to) Indiana, to raid the shop. The raid took place on July 19, and was paid for with taxpayers’ money, including four airline tickets, hotel accommodation, meals, and overtime. Racop has been charged in California with two felonies, as a result of the raid: Obtaining Money by False Pretenses, and Diversion of Construction Funds. The officers took only documents from the shop, but they also read Racop his rights and took him downtown for about an hour, before releasing him. The ABC7 report notes that Racop is also a minister and, as per his own words, he’d expect “trial and tribulations” in life as any good Christian, but not of the kind he’s facing right now. He knows he’s on the right side of the law, in the sense that he did nothing wrong, but he’s still being hounded as if he’s a criminal. ABC7 tried to contact all parties involved, but neither the Sheriff nor Anagnostou was available for comment, since they’re on vacation. The DA prosecuting the case says new evidence has emerged that justifies the criminal charges, but Tony Brass, former prosecutor for San Francisco and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, notes that this kind of display in manpower is ridiculous. This is a dispute over a luxury asset, and as such, it should have been settled in Indiana civil court. As the second video below shows, Fiberglass Freaks’ Batmobile replicas are the ultimate buy for the ultimate Batman fan (*with deep-enough pockets). Built from scratch, they have the looks and some of the functionality of the fictional TV car, including flashing beacon light, a detecta-scope, and even a working flamethrower. But if what Racop says is even partly true, this one fan went too far in his quest of getting his hands on one – in the timeframe he wanted. Batman would not approve. Batman emerges victorious in EU trademark fight
thehill.com By Lauren Sforza 06/07/2023 https://youtu.be/oVEnq-woe6Y Batman foiled an Italian retailer Wednesday as DC Comics successfully defended its trademark in the European Union. Reuters reported that the Luxembourg-based General Court, Europe’s second top court, ruled in favor of Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Comics more than two decades after it registered its Batman logo with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. Commerciale Italiana Srl had filed a challenge to the logo in 2019, arguing that it lacked a distinctive character and that it should be allowed for usage on clothing and carnival items. “The evidence submitted to the General Court is not sufficient to show that the EU trade mark representing a bat in an oval surround was devoid of distinctive character on the date of filing of the application for registration,” the court ruled, according to the report. “For the relevant public, that distinctiveness makes it possible to associate, according to EUIPO, the goods covered by the trade mark with DC Comics and to distinguish them from those of other undertakings,” it added. Commerciale Italiana Srl will be allowed to appeal its case to the EU Court of Justice, the top European court. The court victory comes ahead of the Caped Crusader’s latest big-screen appearance. Both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton play Batman in “The Flash,” which is in theaters starting June 16. |
