Problems after win 7 Pro Updates

My CD-Rom drive is still showing as working properly but won't read discs
Anyone else had this problem with this months updates ?
Worked out which one is causing the problems ?
Or any ideas on how to fix


Found The problem Myself after 2 & 1/2 hours of very bad language a few kicks of the table and hair pulling.

Not an Update problem just coincidence that it happened after an update, but I'm still blaming Windoze
freac hadn't removed its self from the task manager after I had closed it and was still controlling the drive

Have you tried doing a SYSTEM RESTORE ..? If not, type it into your search panel on start menu & follow the instructions. This will revert your pc/laptop to the place before updates; then turn of your updates so it doesn't happen again.

I'm hoping this belongs here, but apologies if it should go somewhere else.

I've been running Win 7 64 bit for about a year on my current PC with no real problems. That was until this morning when the CPU started running continually at around 50 percent and I could hear the hard drive frantically clicking away. There seemed no obvious reason for it.

The culprit eventually appeared to be synchost and after a bit of research on various sites it seems it was linked to Windows Updates. After disabling Windows Updates (which I didn't really want to do) and re-booting the problem seems to have cleared. So I am wondering if Microsoft are trying to download something unusual at the moment?

Microsoft sadly have this liking for adding unnecessary updates. In my humble opinion, and as a long time user & frequent re-installer of Win7 on various units, there are no new updates that you need; so turning them off should not affect your unit. Most of the updates are 'platform', 'dos', 'security' or 'ms office' updates that add nothing to what you already should have by now.

I have W7 Pro x64, and I haven't even been able to download the latest round of updates. It won't get past 0%. I tried various recommended fixes, but no dice. Two of them had a "Wait" status from Windows Secrets Patch Watch. (One is a kernel update, and they always advise you to wait on those.)

Get a good backup program (I have Acronis and Comodo), create a boot/recovery disk, and make an image of your C: drive. Then run updates, before altering anything else on the drive. Updates have a problem? Restore your drive from the image you created. Maybe try installing the updates one at a time to pinpoint the problem.

System Restore has never worked for me, so I have it turned off. I make a backup image of the registry, and of the whole partition, before I hit the rack every night.

Works for me - and has saved my keester many times.

It sounds as if the lens might be dirty. If the drive is several years old, it may have accumulated dust and dirt on the lens. This will prevent the drive from reading and writing properly. You can buy a lens cleaner disk for around $7US. Every one that I've used comes with clear instructions on how to use them. It looks like a DVD disk but it has a brush or cleaning element on the disk for removing dirt and dust from the lens. You insert the disc and follow the directions. If dirt or dust is the problem, this should fix it. I hope that helps.

If you were manually downloading the updates, that might be the problem. I've noticed when I try to download updates myself instead of letting the PC do it automatically, it sits at zero forever. If, however, I let the machine update automatically it works fine. Do not shut off updates. Ignoring the poop that MS sometimes puts in downloads, updates are the single best security measure you can take to prevent malware. Besides normal updates, they contain patches to security holes that have been discovered in the OS. And yes, sometimes MS downloads hog system resources and thrash the hard drive, which makes the pc run like molasses. You just have to deal with it.
