Another example of how far to the right the Republicans and the Tea Party have gone. During the CPAC conference last week, they had a panel discussion entitled: "Trump The Race Card: Are You Sick And Tired Of Being Called A Racist When You Know You’re Not One?” Heh, heh. What a name. Only a racist would go to such a thing.

Anyway, the thing fairly quickly devolved into a real problem for the Conservatives when a 30 year old male from N Carolina suggested that blacks should be thankful for slavery. An interesting quote:

"ThinkProgress spoke with Terry, who sported a Rick Santorum sticker and attended CPAC with a friend who wore a Confederate Flag-emblazoned t-shirt, about his views after the panel. Terry maintained that white people have been “systematically disenfranchised” by federal legislation.

When asked by ThinkProgress if he’d accept a society where African-Americans were permanently subservient to whites, he said “I’d be fine with that.” He also claimed that African-Americans “should be allowed to vote in Africa,” and that “all the Tea Parties” were concerned with the same racial problems that he was.

At one point, a woman challenged him on the Republican Party’s roots, to which Terry responded, “I didn’t know the legacy of the Republican Party included women correcting men in public.”

Gotta love that last one. No wonder women just love the Republicans and the tea party. How far back do these people want to go? Civil War era? Or maybe the Stone Age?

And people wonder whats the problem with conservatives. Seems pretty evident to me.

During the Napoleonic wars, a standard unofficial punishment used by the lower deck hands to punish thieves and informers was cobbing. The cobbing board was usually one of the short planks from the base of a barrel. The men would hold the offendor down so he couldn't move while taking it in turns to beat him across the buttocks and legs with the plank, each man continuing until he was too tired to beat the victim any longer. Strangely, no one else on the ship, including the captain, ever saw or heard a thing and officially nothing happened, except that Ordinary Seaman XYZ was in the sickbay for at least two weeks before being passed fit for light duties.

Much as I hate to admit it, I would dearly like this man to be cobbed.

Admit it though. Its social dim-wits like this that make some conservatives so much fun. Its better than a trip to the circus. American politics would be so boring if some conservatives weren't so aggressively stupid and completely guileless about sharing that fact with everyone.

I get your point. There is a certain amount of satisfaction in being able to point out the idiocy of these people. But at the same time its really kind of terrifying that people such as this aren't immediately taken out and "cobbed" (thanks Scoundrel) for saying such things. Instead, some people actually applaud him. What does that say about a certain percentage of the US population? And how could anyone, in their right minds, consider voting for a party that doesn't immediately strongly denounce such people?

Don't know for sure. I'm pretty sure he's a Tea Partier and even more sure he's not a Democrat. So he would certainly tend to vote for Republicans and probably never vote for a Democrat.

I agree in theory, but that's why its called a democracy. People have the constitutional right be stupid if they want, and people like this are always going to exist. Sometimes we really, really drop the ball (2000 to 2008 is a good example) but I have faith that most people can see a fool for what they are, and tend to not let it influence their thinking. If anything the entire history of civilization in a nutshell can be explained as humankinds inevitable progress towards social equality. It will probably never be perfect, but as a species we have socially evolved in a positive way year by year and century by century.

In general, I think you are completely correct. The problem is that once in a while the population of morons increases to the point where, all of a sudden, people realize they have some political influence. Then, some unscrupulous despot realizes this and convinces the morons to follow him to armageddon.

Thats happened far too many times recently and I was really hoping not to be around the next time it did. Now it looks like thats not going to happen.

So time marches on and we eventually improve as a society. You just have to try not to get caught up in one of those hiccups though.

I guess so. Although I doubt he has any interest in actually moving back to Europe. He just thinks the blacks should go back to Africa so they could then vote there.

After all, unless he is an aboriginal, he is probably of European blood and with a nice name like Scott Terry - he's most likely of British descent. (perhaps a distant relative of one John Terry, he of the centre of Chelsea's back line?....but I digress)
Sounds good to me but I'll let you guys figure that out.

I am astounded by the logic of knuckleheads like this - he is as much an immigrant in America as those he wishes to deport.
No doubt about that but I doubt if that thought has ever entered his mind.

However, I am pretty sure (given the small sample size of Brits here on VEF) that they wouldn't want him back in their country...

We certainly don't want him. Any takers?
Hey take him! We've got a whole bunch more you can have!

Would it be against forum rules to cross-post this to the Newtown thread and say that this guy probably has a nice collection of firearms sitting at home?
Thats fine with me. You must realize that many of the people you're arguing with on the right are just like this guy.

Look at it another way. If the conservatives were ALWAYS stupid and wrong then no one would ever be one. Both sides of our political spectrum need the other as a mirror to see not only what they stand against, but also what they stand for. If the conservative movement were wholly discredited it would actually weaken the liberal movement as well. Each side needs the other to keep them "honest".

It strikes me as very unwise to think that all Republicans are dumb and ignorant - or to imagine that there are no foolish liberals.
