Organising your collection (merged)

I have several external hard drives and use a folder system to keep files organized. There are more subfolders than shown but this is basically the system I use.

I sort mainly in country of origin. (which is sometimes a problem). I have two main folders: modern and classic (pre 1998) and then subfolders for countries. There's also a few main folders for genres like softcore, gonzo, teens, busty, hairy and so on. It's not easy being a porn collector. And with everything being available online 24/7 it's also nonsense. I've got lots of movies I have never watched and never will. Yet I like to store them in the right folder.

I try not to rename any download (pic or vid), as I have frequently found it helpful to have the original filename to find similar content, such as a pic series. Sometimes, just changing to the next sequential number or letter produces results. If the filename means nothing (such as "01") I won't change it until the next "01", at that time I will add an alphabetic suffix, like "01 a", then "01 b", etc, etc. If I know the subject name, I create a folder using "lastname firstname" format. If I don't have a subject name, I have several "genre" (thanks Stinky ^^) folders such as MILF, Amateur, Lingerie, Nonnude, etc etc. I find that physical description folder names are easier to file and later search than specific acts like BJ, Sex, etc. I have several external drives, but keep one as Favorites. I maintain the same file structure, merely copy from the source drive to my Favorites drive. In case a folder in my Favorites falls out of favor, I simply delete the folder (the content remains on the original source drive).

For my video files that are scenes I have a system:

• a folder for each model with more than 10 videos
• a model's folder contains
  - two sub folders pics and vids
  - a pdf print with the model's page on a site like boobpedia
  - a index_vids.jpg image with screenes from each video (generated using a script)
  - videos are named 'Model1, Model2 - title.ext'
• the naming and index help finding duplicates

Other videos are stored in category folders like 'vids/busty' or 'vids/milf'

But what about busty milfs?

I also have a database where every model and video has an entry. Using the naming scheme 'model1, model 2 - title' the database can be populated automatically.

Then I have a little tool when I right click a file. This tool shows the screen of the video and I can assign arbitrary tags like 'stockings', 'fenchmaid', 'chubby'.



And now play lists are generated using the information from the database. These are generated daily and shuffled.
So I can have play lists with french maids or with busty models wearing stockings.

I just realized that I probably spend too much time organizing my porn. But its fun.

Whole movies are different thing for me. I store all movies in one folder and rename them
MovieTitle_Model1_Model2_studio_year.ext, eg. LadyCherie_ElodieCherie_KarenLancaume_dorcel_1999. avi

I only put models in the name that are important to me, otherwise it would be too much. So I also have movies with no model in the file name. And then I cut out scenes from models that interest me and put them into the model folder.

But most of my stuff are scenes, since I collect all stuff I can get from models I like.
My database only contains the scene files (about 5000), not the whole movies.

The database consists of several tables:


There is an n:m relationship between model <-> file and file <-> tag. A file references one or more models and one or more tags. That's the beauty of relational databases.

And I also store the md5 hash for each file for duplicate detection. And if something is really a duplicate, I only keep the version with better quality.

Addendum:
For videos with more models I put the file in the first models folder and create symbolic links in th other models folders. Symbolic links are a nice feature of unix file systems

I have an external hard drive and I split my collection into folders according to category: Classic babes (movies and sets); Modern babes (movies and sets) and special interest folders (movies) e.g. interracial, threesome etc.

Interesting concept. Printing color images is expensive, but you do not have to worry about hard drive crashes. And browsing through photos on paper is a nice experience.
I only have stuff in digital form, and I constantly worry about data loss.

I now have my collection on a 1Ter External drive and it is fairly well organised. I don't keep pictures, except for a few of former girlfriends. My main folder is full length videos/films lasting more than a hour. All have the title, year and running time visible. This material dates from the 1960s to 2018.

Another folder contains shorter length videos and tends to be newer porn. These downloads are from Dorcel, Tushy or Brazzers. If I really like a short, I may edit out some of the crap, and block the logos or do some careful cropping, as I don't like intrusive lettering on a really good video.

Having less time to spare on fiddling about with videos these days, I now put unaltered files in a seperate folder.

Further folders contain a few compositions of things like MILFs or Babes and I also keep proper vintage stuff in another. These are nearly all copies I've improved with my video software.

What I have done since I joined VEF, is to generally move up in quality, so all new stuff tends to be HD 1280 and I have managed to upgrade many older videos to a good level. I really don't see much point in having a classic like Night Trips or Dixie Ray unless it's the best quality available.

If it's VHS quality, I generally don't bother keeping it any longer.
