Did you know...
...you probably thought you did but chances are you didn't! Here are some common misconceptions. The Great Wall of China is not visible from space. Cold weather does not cause colds. The nursery rhyme "Ring a Ring a Rosy" has nothing to do with the Plague. Alaric's "sack" of Rome was probably quite orderly.

Alaric only sacked Rome because the Romans owed Him money and had refused to pay Him.

In 1960 a film was made in Britain called "tunes of glory" it was set in a fictional Scottish regiment so they made a fake tartan for the kilts. Those kilts were used again in "carry on up the khyber".

After his execution in 1618, Sir Walter Raleigh's widow, Elizabeth 'Bess' Throckmorton, was presented with his severed head, which she kept in a bag until her death many years later!
Raleigh, and his head, are buried in St Margarets in Westminster Square, opposite the Houses of Parliament.

All tartans are essentially fake. The whole idea was dreamt up by Sir Walter Scott.

I seem to recall that kilts, possibly the idea of clans and Hogmanay were French in origin.?

Colonel Yang Liwei (now Major General) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) was the first Chinese astronaut, going to space for 21 hours in October 2003. There was a mass outbreak of national pride, but unfortunately he went from hero to zero in an instant because at a press conference after his return he was asked if he could see The (Great) Wall from space, he said "of course not".
The myth started that you could see the wall from the moon - very, very unlikely. The myth that is visible from space started with the Americans. (Once, I was flying along it in a normal 747 leaving Beijing, and it's bloody hard to see from an aircraft!). No human built structures can be seen from orbit. |

Sir Thomas More was beheaded in july 1535, and his body is buried in the chapel of St.Peter ad Vincula in the Tower of London.
However, his head is buried in Canterbury, Kent! After he was executed one of his daughters buried the body, but his natural daughter Margaret ('Meg' Roper) obtained the head from its spike and kept it until her death. The head was buried with her in the Roper family vault in St. Dunstans Church, Canterbury. Isn't history fun!
