Just a little curious about member reputation.
I've been watching my own stats increase and referring to different aspects of the Members List for comparison, regarding member rank.
I've also been comparing other members reputation to my own.
From time to time(out of statistical curiosity)I'll view a member's public profile and their stats.
What doesn't seem to add up is some of their stats
I've noticed that some will have been thanked in more posts than they've actually posted

Anybody care to shed some light on this?

Oops,mind the title typo. Lol!!

I'm not the best to speak on this. So I'll defer to anybody wanting to clarify or correct.

My understanding is that deleted posts are removed from the post count. But the thanked is tracked differently. And sometimes thing just happen with software tweaks and upgrades and server moves.

Most anomalies are down to self deleting posts for things like in my case inferior galleries which others have bettered with full sets so i just delete them...1500+ posts...really should report them for deleting given soft deletions by members arent truly gone from the forum and from memory have to be removed by staff behind the scenes.

Forum wide behind the scene clean-ups that empty staff deletion caches / bins permanently
have an effect on the numbers

I wouldnt pay too much attention to the stats or make it a motivating factor
as to how you post on the forum as some have done in the past.

The only one that really counts is that your coloured green and not red under posts

Don't usually make a habit out of typing in thanks, but thanks Buttsie and Winebeavis.

That makes a lot of sense and now that I reflect on it,realize that's exactly what I've seemed to experience.
When I go to User CP,I'll notice my rep points and I'll notice that I've been thanked.
The odd time the points are still there, but it will say it's has been moved to a Mod's trash bin and inaccessible.
Or sometimes I'll click the post I was thanked for and I get a "You do not have permission to access" type of message.
Think I have about 30-50 points like that,so far.
I wont worry about that.
I'll just continue to contribute and give thanks, where and when I can.

Thanks again

The reason you get the "you do not have permission" sign come up probably means that something was posted already and was removed or is in the process of being removed-the equivalent of putting a MEN AT WORK sign up in the middle of the road. Reputations take time to develop on here, a measure of what members think of your input be it typed or scanned pictures etc. I can tell you personally it took me over a year when I first joined here, but that has built up over the years I've been on here, and whilst I am sure a number of members/Mods don't like me that much, the vast majority who do know me like what I do/say etc. I wouldn't worry about it as long as you contribute your own way people will say thanks.

I was puzzled by this kind of thing but, with the help of other members, eventually got it sorted out. Unfortunately, the thread in which I did so has been removed so I can't check, but I think I'm right in saying that your post count goes up and down as your posts are added or deleted, but your thanks count never goes down, even if the thanked post has been deleted; and so your 'thanked post' count also never goes down either. It's complicated by the fact that when, from the ordinary members point of view, a post is deleted, it is really moved to an area accessable only to mods (that's what causes the message mentioned in the previous post), and so your post count doesn't go down until it's deleted from there. Self-deletions - this is what I can't remember - may be different in some respects. Which brings me to a slightly off-topic question:

I was told it was a bad idea to make posts simply to delete them (here if you're wondering why anyone would), but I'd like to ask a moderator now, in light of this point, what we should do if we want a post, that we made in good faith, deleted? Should we delete it ourselves, or send a PM/post in the relevant help thread/write DELETE ME on it, or what?

Speaking solely for myself, it doesn't matter to me if a member self deletes an obsolete or redundant post. For example, for some reason a post get's posted twice. Or you realize there was a mistake in the post that edit can't fix. Those self deletes are harmless.

It's when a member gets mad or whatnot and starts deleting content is when I have a problem. Deleting content usually requires a damn good reason where I troll.

Deleting is not typically a big issue. If it were, it would be too easy to disable the delete function from members.

EDIT I really don't know if I was here before the thanks button days or not. But the software does allow the possibility of positive and negative "reputation" instead of "thanks". The amount of reputation you received might not be equal amongst members. The more reputation you had, the more your positives counted when spreading reputation around. I would say that there were crazy limitations with that system, such as "having to spread reputation around" before giving it the same members so often. Limits on how much you could like/dislike per day, etc. I've seen it mentioned before that VEF used to use something like this system. It might've been here during my time, but just can't recall.

It might factor into why somebody with less thanks has a higher reputation level than someone with more thanks. If the former has even happened.

Just PM a Mod in the relevant section

I can't possibly say here mate, but let's just say I have had a feeling for some time over a number of years however I don't really care what anyone thinks, I've been here long enough for people to either like the stuff I do or not. My reputation is solid enough, however I am seriously thinking that enough is enough on here and leaving - yeah I know I've said that in the past but this time I really am contemplating it.
