If we're talking favorites of the vintage era, I'll take Ann Pennington and Ulla Lindstrom.

PB was better at the girl next door look, no doubt about it...and Oui had them all beat.

I always thought that PH was a little heavy on the Eurobabes. There are some Playmates that seem to have pushed the envelope, though.

who says you can't have both?

For Playmate: Lynn Thomas
For Pet: Linn Thomas

Yep, one in the same. Linn was first lady to be both. One or two others have done it since...

I always preferred PB over PH because there seemed to be a "coldness" about PH girls, there was never much text about them so you never felt you knew them (i.e. where they were from, etc.) at least with PB you got to know them a little. And yes, for all we know what was there might've been a complete invention by the magazine, but that's just me. This probably increased when they started printing the Data Sheets on them in the late 70's. How much was airbrushed never mattered to me. I've met a few Playmates through the years and they were alway beautiful, with Pets you never knew what you were getting. I had it happen more than once when a Pet appearance was suddenly changed and someone you knew nothing bout was substituted.

And I agree, PH really went downhill fast. I think the Vanessa Williams or Madonna photos were their last gasp at notoriety. Guccionne was such a sleazeball anyway, Hef at least held on to some strand of dignity with PB. Remember, the Vanessa W. photos were offered to him first and he turned them down because he didn't want to be the guy who brought down the first black Miss America.

This is an interesting point...so many of the Pets fell off the face of the earth after their appearance in the magazine and a couple of publicity appearances, prior to the era starting in the 90's when Pets received more notoriety after being in the magazine, either in hardcore, softcore, music videos, etc.

I've heard of a few pets who really did do a "one-shot" modeling gig with PH and quit. They just went on with their lives.

There's also been an interesting discussion on the My Favorite Pets thread recently, where the widower of Phyliss Partin, July '85, has been discussing their experience with Penthouse, as they were married at the time. They were nudists, and evidently, PH had talent agents looking everywhere for talent (and they found it ). Phyliss did the one assignment for PH, did some publicity, and went back to married life. Another poster shares a similar story.

So, PH had a lot of models leave the business after their one-time appearance, and not for negative reasons. There are a lot of reasons this could be the case, but I believe, ultimately, Guccione wanted models who weren't looking for stardom after the magazine, and tended to choose models who expressed that preference, going so far as to obscure their identity with minimal details in the magazine. After the Stratton murder, avoiding the stars-in-their-eyes types (and the suitcase pimps, for the matter) wasn't necessarily a bad strategy.

Phyliss was my wife from 12.31.1981 until her death on 01.16.2001. While it is true we were regulars at a nude beach (Baker Beach in SF) ... her appearance had nothing to do with 'scouts'. Rather, I had taken some nudes of Phyl both at the beach and in our room as we prepared to go out for the evening. By sheer coincidence, we got the photos back from the lab within a day or so of the new PH issue arriving in the mail. Phyl & I were both fans ... especially of the women with women pics and the Forum letters.

That issue had an ad inviting women to submit their photos to the magazine. Without telling Phyl about it ... I took a few of those photos, stuffed them in envelope and mailed them off.

A few weeks later she asked where those photos were. I told her what I did and she laughed. Because she never thought of herself to be as pretty and sexy as the models we looked at ... she said PH would never want her to model. So you can imagine how stunned we were when Earl Miller called and told us Bob Guccione had seen her pictures and wanted her to be in the magazine.

Phyl never had any desire to be a model or to be famous. She simply wanted to a wife and mother to our boys. So when the issue came out and the 5 or 6 promotional were done ... we went back to being who we were.

The two pictures I've included with this post are from the beach and the photo set I sent to PH.

Looks like I'm in the minority here. I've always preferred the PH layouts of the eighties and ninties over PB. The PB photos from that era, IMO, have a surreal quality to them. Waxy...almost too perfect. The PB girls (predominately big breasted blondes) seemed more automaton than flesh. I've heard numerous times that the PB models were photoshopped the old school way (air brush). Maybe that's why they look fake. The PH girls appeared more real and more erotic. Also "more real" because they actually photographed their pussies

when I was young, in the 70s, I preferred PH over PB. The centerfolds were more interesting, the pictorials and even the articles were more interesting. PH appealed to vain intellectuals like me. In the 80s, PH started going downhill while PB improved. Now I cannot stand to look at PB.
I note that PB has done more to develop their playmates. They provide lessons in public speaking and acting. They also seemed to find the right girls. I have met a few at autograph shows. Pets are shy unsure, while playmates are more outgoing. I feel that is why PB is doing so much better.

When I was 8, I saw my first PB and was mesmerized by the fact that here was a magazine that showed bare tits was shy about showing the southern region. I remember when I got a little older, I heard talk about PH showing "pussy hair". I was 13 when I saw my first Pet and from then on PH was my favourite. PB followed suit and gave us glimpses, but PH put it out there and paved the way for LFP to give us pink.
I'm now partial to LFP, as the women seem approachable and consistent with his slogan, "for the rest of the world".PB and PH are unrealistic fantasy for me. I'm the type who would never daydream about flying like Superman, but I would daydream about flying in an F18 because that's actually possible. I'm the same way about my fantasy women. A woman always seems more alluring to me if the possibility of fucking her is less of an improbability.
