Sexism in the movies.
Sexism Watch: Sigourney Weaver Can’t Be An Action Star But Harrison Ford Can...
Sigourney Weaver is the mother of the female action hero. Her Ellen Ripley gave us a woman who was not afraid to be a woman and to kick some serious ass. As the second film (and best in my humble opinion) Aliens, celebrates its 25th anniversary this week, Weaver has been making the rounds of the press. In an interview with Moviefone she talked about wanting to play Ripley one more time but that the studio wouldn’t be interested in her because she is over 60. That’s so sad and sexist cause the studios have no problem having men over 60 be action heroes. Liam Neeson who will be 60 next year has been rediscovered as an action star. And remember Red with Bruce Willis (he’s in his late 50s)? And aren’t Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger making comebacks? M

yup. but as you correctly point out... they're men...!!!
despite Sigy having more talent in her little finger than either arnie or stallone; she wont get cast in any major roles at her age. shame, but truth of the glamourous Hollywood world of movies..!!

does it matter that they're men?
what should matter is the fact that she's a damn good actress who has proven herself time and time again in action roles... her age shouldn't be a factor... just blatent sexism that should have been stamped out by now M

unfurtunely sigourney has the right about those characters in the movies, is almost imposible see in a movie a mature woman in action scenes.
but in red, we have the best example of a mature women kicking seriously ass, i reffer to the cute 70 years old, damme Helen Mirren (i love her) i was stunned, watching her with this machine gun wearing these beauty dress halston 80's style. but i just remember to Mrs. Mirren in those character, i'm trying to think in someone else & i can't. sorry for my english. |
