Mr Sam Spade - I thought the last version of the Mae West image I did was pretty good, flashy and an attention getter just like the lady herself. But in all honesty, I was somewhat dissatisfied with the way it turned out. Problem was, it took so long to do, I was reluctant to start another revision. But a comment by one of my new customers (a Mr nopar king by name) made me reconsider tackling the task. I found myself on the internet, looking for anything that might tell me what the original colors on that dress might be. There's too much to read in one lifetime, but I did find an article on sale in eb*y that spurred my interest. It was a Betty Boop doll in a 'Mae West dress.' Since it appeared that the dress was pink, I thought that replacing the yellow with pink would make a good combination. Problem was, when I actually got around to doing the work, the dress itself was too dark to take a good pink color, and came out more like magenta. Attempting to lighten the color just made it come out more of a pinkish grey than I was willing to accept. However, the changeover only took a couple of hours because I figured out a new, faster operation to changing the colors. If you have any ideas on the proper colors for this thing, I'd be really interested to know what they are. Drop me a PM and we'll discuss it. Meanwhile, here's the new version. Thanks

Wow even more great JJ work but I guess you enjoy the work. I think I might post your pics in Jillys thread as I think people there will be interested but I dont want to streal your thunder so paste them yourself if you want to .
If you're looking for more pics here are 2 to choose from Jerri Byrne & Mel Appleby. No backgrounds at all but I guess you could insert a background if you want. Do as much or as little as you want if the results are half as good as Jillys pic I'll be more than happy.

@DEB JORDAN FAN - a little delay due to other duties, and voila, three more. Please note, I have been attempting to use the same color scheme when the setting appears to be the same as a past picture. Let me know if you want any changes. nopar king is getting priority on the next photos, but you may as well lay some more on me for when those are done.

@nopar king - I see your new pictures and want to know if you want these realistic or jazzed up? Or do you want me to play around again and do several of each? As far as my thunder, I'm quite happy where I am. If you think they should be posted eslewhere, please do so (but give me some credit); I'd probably have some trouble locating her thread in all the clutter on this site anyways.

I particularly like the jazzed up pics but I think it might be best if you do what you want with the them & if its a labour of love this will show in the quality of the results. if you like either of the 2 pics you might want to do a lot with them, if not just have a quick go & I'll look for 1 or 2 to offer you. Two points which may effect what you do, I think its the only FF pic of Jerri I've ever seen, there are probably more but I think they're rare. And also Mel is no longer with us.
Your pics in Jillys thead look good, I'd already edited the first 5 togther in a strip so I had an idea of the effect. Its getting afew thanks so you must be doing something right, I suggest if you do a lot of work on a particular girl its probably worth posting it all in the models thread where it will probably be appreciated. For instance You've probably got enough to put in Deb Jordans thread.

@nopar king - I'm experiencing some difficulties with some tasks I have assumed, things are going a lot slower than I expected. And my internet connection has slowed down to about 1/10th its former speed. I finally got them working oh that after an hour and a half on the phone.
I have completed some work on Jerri's picture, and need to discuss that with you. Despite what you see as similarities between Jerri's and Jilly's pictures, there are enough differences as to make working on Jerri's change much more time intensive than with Jilly.
The first problem I saw was the total lack of a background in most of the picture. There is a total whiteout on the lower right (called a specularity) and that will not take any colors at all unless it is darkened somehow. That's minor, the other difference is much more labor intensive, and centers around her hair. Where Jilly's hair was all tight and compact to the skull with just a little fluff at the bottom of the ponytail that could not fit in either foreground and background selections, both of the new images you've offered have hair which scatters widely and makes determination of what part is background and what is part of the girl difficult to section.
On a regular request, that would not be a problem, I am used to coloring that even if it takes extra time. But in both of these cases, the marginal hair is going to disappear from the girl and need to be transferred from the original photograph made more difficult by the fact that the background in the original and in the new copy will be different colors.
I have finished a couple of revisions on Jerri, and I'll show you what I mean. First pict, cleaned up black and white; second colored girl; nothing spectacular here. Next photo, I need to spearate the girl from the background, but where do you draw the line between hair and background?
I created a new backgournd by shading a picture from upper left to lower right and plopped the girl onto it with no other changes. See the hair? That's where I decided I had to draw the line. So then the next picture needed to have the feathered portions of the hair slowly moved back in. But when it moved, the old white (or grey) background moved with it. The next job is to trace around every strand of hair and try to convert as much of the grey as possible to the new brown. That almost triples the work of coloring hair from any other photo (because of the new background).
So I created a different background, dropped the girl on it again, and had to redo the 'do again. Lots of work for each change where the Jilly pict was just a quick touch up of the ponytail. I'm not complaining, this is just an education process. You thought you had provided a similar photo, but I saw a lot more complications.



Believe it or not, I even had some minor problems with the source color photos you provided. Scanners seem to like picking up a lot more yellow off a printed page than the eye sees. I've done numberous color shifts for myself to make the colors appear right to me, and I did it again here. Below are the two pictures with the original on the left and color shifted versions on the right. See the difference?



I've still only gotten started on Mel's picture. (Can you tell me what the abbreviation FF you used means?) I'll get back to you a little later on that. And yes, the Jilly post on her thread was kind of fun, I've never put so many picts on one post before.
