Here are a few pics that always seemed to define striptease to me, featuring the late great Jayne Mansfield in one of her Vegas shows, from the film "Spree" - man, I wish I could get hold of a copy of that, but it doesn't seem to be anywhere

Some say its that look over the shoulder before dropping a bra strap, others say its the slow. oh so slow pulling down of panties to reveal a curvy bum, others say its peeling off a stocking, some say its the dripping sleaze of the jazzy music, some say its chanting "strip, strip, strip" - surely everyone who looks at this thread has the own ideas of what makes classic striptease so thrilling.

Anyone like to say what traditional striptease does to excite them?

How about black seamed stockings, David Rose's The Stripper and long black gloves to start with - a delicious striptease about to unfold...

Some say(oh gawd I sound like Jeremy Clarkson describing the Stig ) that Rita Hayworth gave a top notch performance in a film where she only peels off opera gloves but combine that with a long black dress(see Patsy Kensit's strip here somewhere) and that is 100% classy-the opposite to that is stockings, suspenders, whatever top, maybe a feather boa or those large feather fans etc-anything which prolongs the routine-and that is what counts as perhaps sleazy-combined with the music. Maybe its me but 'The Stripper' by David Rose seems to have lost its appeal. I am sure though I heard once a better, sleazier version with mute trumpets and a wah wah that was like being shot into the air like a rocket when heard and then seeing the girl stripping off - I doubt I will ever see that sort of strip again, certainly not of that intensity. I can tell you one thing, you do lose a bit of excitement for this sort of thing as you get older-well I do but thats just age I think-oh to be twenty years younger. I remember getting quite excited every time a stripper appeared in tv dramas and cop shows.

Maybe it's because I came along too late, but I've always found The Stripper too corny and over-the-top. To me the ultimate strip music is Harlem Nocturne:

I prefer that song because it doesn't have to be a strip song. Depending on the arrangement, it can be much more subtle and moody. That's why it was used, for example, as the theme to Stacy Keach' Mike Hammer TV series in the 80s. It was also used as a sad accompaniment in an episode of the 80s cop show Crime Story.

It's a very versatile piece of music.

A question for golfgti - black seamed stockings are definitely part of the very best classic striptease for me, but do they stay on or do they come off? or is variety better?

Though The Stripper surely has to be one of the all-time striptease music greats, other David Rose and Sonny Lester and Cy Payne numbers - Ronnie Magri has it right too - can be very rousing. The sleazier the music the more thrilling the act - the music should climax with the act or better still with the point where the lady is nude or nude where it counts! Greenman, your description of the intensity caused by mute trumpet and wah wah - and a girl who knows exactly what to do - is fantastic, it is so easy to feel the thrilling vibrations created by a performer who is out to please her audience and herself.

Back to stockings - and long gloves. Raunchy old style music chimes so well with stripping that the girls can seem even nuder than nude if they keep on their stockings and gloves - or one glove and one stocking on the opposite side to the glove, a special fancy of mine.

False climaxes too are well suited to that style of music, big build up, coming to end, shame she's still wearing something, no there's more to come - more music and more clothes to lose, yummy. What's she going to show, agony!

Harlem Nocturne has several moods, perhaps its more suited to a more 'artistic' style of stripping, polar, the sort where everything's going to come off one by one so you can sit back and relax as it all unfolds. The act in 'Queen of the Blues' where a lady very slowly and deliberately gets it all off to Ravel's 'Bolero' is a perfect demonstration of maximum tease combined with total strip and its the music that makes it work. Harlem left me wanting more, perhaps the perfect introduction into a more raunchy track for the really interesting finale!

Everyone has different ideas of course, that's what makes a good show, so 'hands' up for another traditional tease - a tiny, tiny g-string - on or off?

Rita Hayworth was very beautiful and had charisma on screen as well as the looks and a nice black dress with matching gloves. It was quite a hot routine for 1946 and it still works 65 years on.

I think your words were very well chosen Greenman - the very best traditional striptease routines certainly create intensity in the watching audience and - because of - the intensity of the performer. Isn't the teasing all about the intensity building up, building up to an explosive finale?

That's where good music counts, creating false climax after false climax, each of which a good performer would use to complete another stage in the slow loss of all her clothes. Yes, intensity. Another song that created intensity is 'Fever' - I suppose its because it seems so relentless...

Time to pay another visit to the vintage strip scene, perhaps to a different kind of entertainment establishment, to see a variety show. How about the "mock" striptease where a lady would strip so far and then stop - disappointment. But depending on the show - after all if you went to a strip club you expect to see striptease whereas if its a variety show you're not quite sure how far an act will go - this idea can be used to perfection.

Curvy performer appears on stage in very low cut dress and sings or juggles or mimes, losing dress and maybe gloves, along the way...next time she appears on stage she does much the same but it goes that much further, fantastic, pasties and g-string, not far enough. As the evening draws on, after plenty of glamour, funny men, and spectacle but no strip, she re-appears once more, does her act - you know what to expect and don't get too excited - but then she does the totally unexpected and gets the lot off. No pasties, no panties, no g-string...just sheer naked nudity - as that sinks in that's intensity!

Here's a striptease tradition that the old Revuebar used - all girls on stage to do the rousing finale. A stripping chorus line is different and a line up of nude beauties is awe-inspiring but is good striptease or is there more intensity created by a single performer lost in the art of delighting her audience by slowly, deliberately taking off every single item of clothing?

if you want to know what one such lady used to wear, this was a striptease establishment not a variety place, how about scarlet red corset, long red gloves, red stockings and suspenders, red panties and shiny red heels? No bra twirling with a corset but lots and lots of fastenings to tease with.. nothing more pleasing than her strutting her stuff ending up by wearing nothing but those shiny red heels. What was her music choice? "The Lady in Red"!
