Cuban boxer Teofilo Stevenson has passed away. He was 60 years old. Stevenson was only one of three boxers to ever win three Olympic Gold Medals. He won the heavyweight class in the 1972, 76 and 80 Olympics. Stevenson compiled a 302-22 record and he will be remembered as one of the greatest Olympic and heavyweight boxers of all time. The man had a devastating right handed punch that he used to great effect as evidenced by this this clip of him knocking out James Tate in 1976. A revered and beloved man in Cuba and one hell of a great fighter. He will be missed

Thierry Rolland.
Most famous -and controversial- French television football commentating legend Thierry Rolland has died last night, aged 74, after the victory of France vs Ukraine. "Rolland commentated over a 60 year career on 13 World Cups and nine European Championships - he also commentated at several Olympic Games. He formed a partnership in the commentary box with former France international Jean-Michel Larque, with whom he was due to renew their partnership in Ukraine for M6 Tv for the first time at a major finals since Euro 2004. Rolland's mellifluous tones gained huge popularity and on more than one occasion saved him from being sacked for ill-chosen phrases. The first such instance came in 1976 in a match between France and Bulgaria in which he lost his sang froid with the Scottish referee over his awarding a penalty to the Bulgarians. "Mr Foote, you are a bastard!" he cried on live television. His employer at the time state TV channel Antenne 2 wanted to punish him but backed down after hundreds of viewers wrote in supporting him. On other occasions too he had to apologise publicly to the Tunisian people and in particular referee Ali Bennaceur, of whom he had made what were termed 'racist' comments on live TV after Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal against England in the 1986 quarter-final. "Honestly, Jean-Michel, don't you think that there could have been a better choice to referee such a big match as this than a Tunisian?" he said. However, on a brighter note he will also be remembered for his commentary on the final whistle of France's 1998 World Cup victory over Brazil. "I believe that after witnessing that, one can die happily!" T. Rolland was at same the most beloved and most hated journalist. A caricature of "franchouillard" (french arrogant stupid racist & hyper-nationalist bloke) and really a good guy too, in love with foot-ball. Icon of popular culture. R.I.P. |

This brave decent woman and popular singer who defied the Pakistani Taliban`s decree against music and dancing was shot dead after she left a beauty salon last night.
Ghazala Javed, 24, was shot after a motorcyclist opened fire on a car she was in with her father, who was also killed. Police said that one of the suspects is her ex-husband, who she married then quickly asked for a divorce after finding out he had lied and had at least one other wife already. Which in that back to front messed up society was considered dishonorable to the husband. Yeah because better to remain with a lying bigamist than bring shame to what ?, an unjust culture that thinks treating women as second class citizens is how things should be !?! Ms Javed, who was popular with young, progressive ethnic Pashtuns in northwest Pakistan, was reportedly driving home with her father when a motorcycle raced towards their car and opened fire. She was hit with six bullets and and pronounced dead along with her father at a hospital in Peshawar, according to CNN. I desperately wish such twisted mentalities didn`t exist , but that both you and your father R.I.P

Wasn't he in BBC's Making Out, set in a factory, I think he played a character called Chunky. Desperately sorry to hear of his death, he came across as a nice guy and I really liked the Flying Pickets and I have Only You on vinyl single still.
