Watching Hotel Artemis
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5834262/ Is this a rip-off of John Wick movies' Continental hotel? Quote:

welcome to Potter's Bluff
Dead and Buried (1981)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082242/ One hell of a weird opening as Lisa Blount seduces a holidaying photographer in order to distract him, then the villagers attack him, secure him to a post and bur him alive, it soon gets even weirder with a screaming corpse in a crashed car and even more killings and the ordinary townsfolk of Potter's Bluff are the killers. Are these killings what they seem to be ???? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZmlEh34unM

Three Identical Strangers (2018)
In 1980 New York, three young men who were all adopted meet each other and find out they're triplets who were separated at birth. Then they discover why. What starts as a feel good story, and media sensation, becomes something a bit more sinister in this fascinating documentary. Highly recommended. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7664504/?ref_=nv_sr_1 |

Devouring Waves (1984) aka Monster Shark aka Shark: Rosso nell'oceano (original title)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088100/ After a series of suspected shark attacks a marine biologist, dolphin trainer, a scientist, and a tough guy who also happens to be a technical genius believe the attacks are being carried out by a proto-shark, a living fossil but unknown to them the creature they are hunting, which is also hunting them is a genetically engineered shark/octopus hybrid. Not a classic film but one of my go-to monster movies when I want to put my feet up and relax https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThP3Pe_H4Cs

My other half is not from the UK and is always interested by what makes us laugh. We've just spent the last hour and a half watching the Are You Being Served? movie. She laughed a lot. Must have been the wine.

Hotel Artemis (2018)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5834262/ In the two John Wick movies, there is the Continental Hotel where criminals, mostly hired hitmen, hitwomen and murderers, have a neutral place to go to recover and heal from their wounds. It has its own set of very strict rules and any violation of them by any members will result in revocation of membership and possible death. The Hotel Artemis is also like the Continental Hotel and it also has its own strict rules and any violation of them will also result in revocation of membership. The concierge of the Hotel Artermis also doubles as a nurse. She has all the medical training, equipment and medicine necessary in each room to treat whatever wounds the criminals might have incurred on the outside world prior to checking into the hotel. There is nothing good about this movie that makes you want to write home about. It seems like the writers and producers watched the John Wick movies, thought they could take the basic premise and concept of the Continental Hotel and give it its own separate film and that's where their creativity ends. Wait, I regress: their creativity never even began since they stole the premise of their movie from another movie. Jodie Foster plays the nurse who runs Hotel Artemis and she is a great actress who has given us many great performances in many movies in the last 40+ years: first as a child actress (The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, Taxi Driver, Freaky Friday) and then as an adult (The Silence of the Lambs, The Accused, Nell, Foxes, Panic Room). But in this film, her acting is very wooden. Her delivery of her lines of dialogue just comes across as if she is disinterested and reading directly from a cue card somewhere off screen; as if she doesn't want to be in this film and she is only doing it because maybe she needed a paycheck to buy a new wardrobe or a new car or something. The rest of the cast, the ones who play the criminals who are the guests of the Hotel Artemis, are just paper thin including Jeff Goldblum who usually always has a great character written for him regardless of the movie, giving his 110% to the role every time but not this time!! 1.5/5 |

I watched it last year but have just got the DVD copy
The Devil's Men aka Land of the Minotaur (1976)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074769/ Set in Crete and opens with a human sacrifice, a Catholic priest (Donald Pleasence) is worried about a series of disappearances of young couples, he calls on an old friend Milo (Costas Skouras) who in the end reluctantly agrees to help after another three young people vanish. The culprits are a satanic cult led by Baron Carofax (Peter Cushing) who worship an old Minotaur idol, a nice mix of sex and horror although the lack of an actual demonic creature is disappointing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gk84cD5DQe8

Darkness Wakes (2017) aka The Sitter aka Charlotte Wakes (original title)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4697228/ Charlotte, played by the splendidly figured Aisling Knight, applies for, and gets, a job to house sit in a country home for a weekend and tend to the cat, who we rarely see, the couple are pretty weird but £200 a day tempts her. She is given almost free reign of the house but there are off limits areas. The first night she experiences the start of some strange erotic nightmare that gets deeper as the weekend progresses, a friend pops round for a few hours the next day but pretty soon it is business as usual. You know there is something odd about a strange man and woman she meets but are they weirder than the home owners? A cracking eerie film that I will be watching again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yv5wOupAfz8

A STAR IS BORN
A famous country rock musician Bradley Cooper as Jackson Maine, and a looking for her big break, extremely talented singer and songwriter Lady Gaga as Ally attempt to have a relationship and make beautiful music together PRAISE: I knew going in that Gaga would knock it out of the park with her musical performances. How this woman is able to channel some Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand into her performance was mesmerizing. It's Cooper who is the musical revelation in the film.He soulfully performs with an on stage swagger as if he's been singing and performing at stadiums for years. I have so much admiration for his Direction of this film. The chemistry between the two is off the charts. Cooper gives the weathered by life performance as a man dealing with personal demon's and physical ailments while trying to maintain a loving relationship Their scenes together are electric, powerful and soul stirring. Gaga is a revelation with her acting giving as much as Cooper can or any other actor in the film The supporting cast is absolutely outstanding:Andrew Dice Clay,Dave Chappelle,Sam Elliott and Anthony Ramos. PROBLEMS: Some old hat been there done that moments about losing your soul in the music industry. This film will likely receive a ton of award nominations and it's deserving of all of them One of the best movies of 2018 Scale of 1-10 a 9 VENOM So can Venom work as a stand alone character and movie without a hint or whisper of Spider-Man? PRAISE:The Jekyll and Hyde back and forth between Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Venom. The character design and some of the SFX and voice work. Some good action sequences and some laughs here and there PROBLEMS: Even going in with extremely low expectations,i left the theatre disappointed. What was with all the slapstick? The script is schizophrenic, with additional memory lapses. The delivery of lines was extremely grating and terrible. Michelle Williams talents....wasted.Riz Ahmed cookie cutter cliched villain. To many quirky moments reminded me of some of those lame comedies from the 80's One action sequence goes on for painfully to long. The film is just all over the place. I hope SONY doesnt go forward with Black Cat or Kraven the Hunter At least they still have Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse up their sleeves. Scale of 1-10 a 3½ |
