I suppose she was that famous, like it or not (and my guess in your case would be 'not' )

Yes, I found that whole episode really irksome and it was the day I realised the world had gone mad.

It's not that it wasn't sad and a shock - but people grieved like they knew her personally. They wept, wailed and became openly hysterical on the street!

I mean, for your own mum, dad, wife or child okay. But someone so far removed from you? What was the psyche there?

As the bus towed the hapless old ham past Jack Barclays he is reputed to have cried out “Stop, stop, you are killing a genius”. Sadly the precious old stager survived for many more years.

I’m with Chris too.

The media seem to go from one extreme to another .
Wall to wall coverage of Aretha Franklin but no mention at all of H from steps who has seemingly sadly passed away just recently .

You can imagine my shock on stumbling across this while out walking .

Thanks Chris; have always felt this. I'm no Republican (after all, I have a piece of paper from Her Maj expressing "especial faith and confidence" in me... sorry about that, ma'am..) but Diana was a two-watt lightbulb who forgot the rules of the game. Oh she could talk to people, yes... but "one of us"? She was the daughter of an Earl who barely saw the real world and looked good in a dress. Ah well, she produced the heir and a spare... The nation lost its marbles in 1997 and has never got them fully back. Mind you, Blair should carry his share of the blame for fanning the flames of the cult. Princess of hearts? Don't remember that one in the pack....

"Recreational mourning" absolutely love that phrase. Write to Susie Dent, get it in the dictionary!

I've always thought one of the biggest lies every hoisted upon us...at least they did in the US...was the labeling of her as a commoner, or as "The People's Princess." Her family has a net worth of somewhere in the $600 million range. How many "commoners" have a net worth north of half a billion? However, I don't blame her for that. It was the media that labeled her as such because it was good for ratings/circulation.

I didn’t find out about the death of Alex Harvey until months later such was the dearth of music news in the mainstream media.

Keith Moons death 40 years ago on sep 7th got quite a mention in the daily mails website and on George Galloway's radio show on talk radio .
There's two polar opposites .
But I like them both !

Anyway a bit of recreational grieving came your way at last Keith !

As a contrary bastard I feel obliged to diagree with everybody on everything, but..... In the year before she died I had attended five funerals so I remember what was par for expressions of grief. I went to a funeral the day after she died and I have never seen so many men in tears and I would vouch it was not just for the poor bastard in the box.
