vera miles..............w/ jimmy stewart in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, 1962.

Hitchcock gave Miles a supporting role in another masterpiece Psycho (1960), as did Ford when he cast her opposite John Wayne and James Stewart in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962),

Default Invitation to the Miles High Club

.
Please don't get me wrong, here. I recognize you, and respect you as the valuable human being that you are. And yet, when it comes to this subject, I don't care what you have to say. Vera Miles was a spectacularly solid specimen of womanhood, and that's that.

In passing, I had caught scenes of Vera Miles in her Tarzan movie (the above shot is from that movie) when it once played on television, and took note of how "risque" some of what that film offered was, as far as this being a 1950s movie. As damsel in distress, Vera showed an ample supply of leg. Since I've been somewhat active at Vintage Erotica of late, and after encountering this thread that has been devoted to her, I made it my special business to see if I could dig that film up, in order to perform a few frame grabs. So, please! Do not say I never did anything for you. (Please.)

The movie was called Tarzan's Hidden Jungle (1955), Gordon Scott's first foray (of a total of six) to his version of the jungle man. Unbeknowst to viewers, Gordon's wild side also surfaced behind-the-scenes, as he made the vivacious Vera his wife in the next year. (The marriage lasted four years, and produced a role-busting kid, as may be read below.)

Shiver me timbers, and your timbers, and all of the timbers of Jellystone Park. Vera Miles is absolutely stunning. (A villain of this piece was the always watchable Jack Elam, as seen at the end of this next row.)

"Me Tarzan, You Jill." Doesn't have the same ring as the more familiar phrase highlighting the name of Tarzan's traditional mate, but Vera plays a nurse, and the following two shots show how she and the big fella met. She just happened to be skinny-dipping, when this naked white guy steps out from behind the bushes.

Jill has her dignity, mind you; when the jungle king tries to revive her with water after Jill faints (the sissy woman couldn't handle the double blow of quicksand and an encounter with a menacing python; that's "girls" for you. Sheesh! Never you mind I would have wet myself before fainting), she covers herself up, while shooting her masher an accusing look.

Since we are in a "Vera" state of mind, let's take a look at how she appeared nearly two decades later, in 1973's Columbo episode of "Lovely But Lethal." (The "lovely" in question was Vera. There was no false advertising, here.) Vera was forty-four, and young Martin Sheen (second photo) suffered a kind of fate that befalls male praying mantises after mating. (Although poor Martin didn't even get to mate.) She looks like Lee Grant in that fourth photograph, doesn't she?

In that "borderline" period of her career when she was beginning to get "character" roles (and no longer being considered as much for the "sexpot" roles), Vera appeared as the classy Madame Raine De Sala in the "The Bridge of Lions Affair: Parts I & II" episodes of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1966):

Finally, let's check Vera out in the very first episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955), entitled "Revenge." (A great story. Vera gets assaulted, and her man, played by Ralph Meeker, becomes intent on homicidal revenge. I guess this plot was probably the reason why they called the episode "Revenge.") She was actually even more revealing with her legs here than with the Tarzan movie. To make the deal sweeter, we even got to feast on part of the legs of Frances Bavier ("Aunt Bee").

Vera Miles is still with us. (I did not know that. She retired from the screen in 1995.) Fate seemed to have dealt her an unkind blow after she had been cast in Vertigo (and slated to become the "new Grace Kelly"), but Vera had to bow out after becoming pregnant. (Blame it on Tarzan.) Maybe this wasn't such a bad thing, given how the star of Vertigo, Kim Novak, failed to reach the show business heights Vera did, later in Vera's career. Ironically, when Hitchcock gave Vera a "consolation prize" two years later, with a role in Psycho, playing Janet Leigh's sister most likely became the role Vera would become best known for. I appreciated that Vera reprised this role in the 1983 "sequel," Psycho II.

Findcandor - Vera Miles looks terrifically delicious in a tight white dress in an Outer Limits (original series) episode named "The Forms of Things Unknown." She gets wet in the dress, too. The web page below has some photos; they are poor examples of Vera's appearance in this episode, IMHO.
