That' right, normally polar bears are quite a bit bigger. But if you had a small bear and a really big male tiger, it's possible for the tiger to be bigger - I've heard of one that was 450 kg

Some species of Bear are relatively small, the Honey Bear for example.

The Sun Bear ( aka Honey Bear) is the smallest bear, maxing out at 65kg or 140lb. it may be smaller than me, but looking at the claws, i still would not want to mess with one.

The genus for bears is Ursus, so you would expect the polar bear to be Ursus Actos, or Arctic Bear. However, this is the Grizzly Bear. The polar bear is Ursus Maritimus, or maritime bear.

The Grizzly or Brown Bear is Ursus Arctos which means" Bear Bear" in Latin and Greek.Surely the smallest bear is the Water Bear or Tardigrade 0.1 to 1,5mm...

I stand corrected. Whilst I learned Latin for 4 years (50 years ago), I only studied Greek for about 3 weeks.

I was associating it with Arctic, which research reveals was derives from arctikos, meaning northern bear.

Might be the smallest, but by far it is the ugliest, and to be honest if it was much bigger the scariest!

Ratty in 'The Wind in the Willows' by Kenneth Grahame was in fact based on a Water Vole, which according to a report on this evening's local news, is in decline which is a shame. Apparently a species of American mink are killing them off!!

The really sad thing, is that the mink were originally released by so-called animal liberationists, who decided it was cruel for the mink to be kept for the purposes of the fur trade. By releasing them they caused devastation to quite a number of native species. The "liberationists" probably have caused much more harm to native wildlife (way in excess of any suffering the mink would have felt) by their actions than if they had let them remain where they were.
