It's true that a lot of people spend it outdoors and many have seafood. Though not in Canberra in the Christmas just gone, because it was frigid on Christmas Day.
Lots of people have the traditional turkey and ham. Also, it's not uncommon for married couples to have Christmas Eve with one lot of parents and Christmas Day with the other, or lunch with one and dinner with the other, etc. Some people go to church, but most don't as we're not a particularly religious country. Also, because it's summer, a lot of people go on holidays. Boxing Day, of course, is the first day of the Melbourne test match (cricket).

If you lived in Australia, and you were where I am right now, yu'd be doing the smart thing I'm about to do....Log off here.

Right now I'm staying at my golf club in the twin towns of Echuca and Moama. It was hot here today but not unbearable hot, just enough too have a round of golf and need a few beers after the ninth hole before finishing the back nine. Right now it's 10 PM, and I don't think it's cooled down much since late afternoon..........So now I'm logging off and jumping into the pool

Cyclone Rusty gathers strength off Pilbara coast

This one is slow moving so a lot of inland flooding is expected
I've never seen a cyclone, don't want too either. I've been too the Pilbara though, awesome part of the country, hopin' the flood damage won't be too extensive.

I wish the people there good luck.

Fortunately, Western Australia is sparsely populated; with sufficient advance warning, I'd like to hope they'll pull all the boats away from the water and head for high ground, minimising property damage and risk to life.

As I also recall from my Geography lessons, way back when, Wesern Australia is mostly semi-desert; there are huge expanses of spinifex grassland, thin, tough and wiry grass which has roots going 40 feet underground and more, adapted to survive in fiercely arid terrain where daytime summer temperatures routinely exceed 40 degrees celcius and where the rainy season extends perhaps two months in one year, in a good year. I can't help wondering how far inland this cyclone system could travel and whether it might even benefit some of the big sheep stations out back of Perth and Fremantle. After all, its an ill wind which blows nobody any good.

But the wind speeds are being reported at 106mph plus by the BBC. That's nasty in and of itself, even if it wasn't raining.

I'd move to New Zealand - it looks more like Great Britain, has a nicer climate than Ostralya, and has fewer crawling things that bite your arse to poisonous death just for the fun of it.

Iron Ore, Natural Gas, Gold, Alumina, Nickel, Copper, Lead, Zinc, Coal, Diamond, Salt, Uranium etc........

A lot of people move out west and work in the mining industry, short and long term. The benefits are very high wages, some younger blokes move there for a few years and earn bucket loads of cash, particularly tradesmen.

The downside is living away from family and friends, not much to do way out in the sticks but drink and gamble ... That's why I never went mining Would have come back broke
