The Chamber

Never sure about these films and I am probably not Mr O'Donnell's greatest fan but I normally enjoy a Hackman movie and this one just flew by.

The Little Dragons (1979)

Tedious Saturday afternoon special sort of movie about a spunky, pre-teen karate class on an outing who encounter kidnapping hillbillies, an inept sheriff's department and a helpful (!) biker gang. Must have been okay in its day for the target age group but my mind started wandering to bits of trivia like actor Charles Lane (Grandpa J.J.) living to be 102 , and that Aug 1970 Playmate Sharon Clark plays a concerned mother. 2/10

Hometown U.S.A. (1979)

Lots of reviews waste time saying this is a low-rent ripoff of American Graffiti (like I just did! ). I prefer to let films stand alone and judge them accordingly. That said, this is an enjoyable enough 50s teen comedy. Characters are funny and played with gusto (Miss Whale Mouse won't soon be forgotten!) and I genuinely cared what the outcome would be of a nerdy teen who goes for a joyride one night in a shiny new Chevy. 6/10

It's Guilty Pleasure Sunday.

Tremors: In a tiny desert town, a group of people find themselves under siege by large burrowing creatures who live and travel underground.

I never got to see this all the way through before. A lot of fun. Back when Kevin Bacon was less douche-y. Michael Gross and Reba McEntyre look like poster children for Clive Bundy's Nevada ranch and the Tea Party movement. 6.0

The One: A tactical law officer must defend himself against an alternate version of himself from another universe who grows stronger with each alternate counterpart he kills.

Written by the Final Destination franchise team. Great sci-fi concept and plot but lousy movie. Could have and should have been much better. Some really poorly-executed vfx action scenes and unnecessary accents and you've got some major cheese. Jet li plays both lead characters. Jason Statham as the second agent (with a really bad Brooklyn accent. They should have just let him use his own voice since he was an intergalactic agent anyway). Still, I can't resist a Jet Li movie. 5.0

Courage Under Fire

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115956/

A very enjoyable film as Meg Ryan moves in a different direction, film wise and Lou Diamond Phillips was the pick of the bunch as the grumpy grunt.

Ben-Hur (1959)

Enthralling afternoon at the theatre seeing my 31st (of 87) Best Picture on the big screen. Having never seen it, I had mild reservations about the 3½ hour runtime. Would I find it bloated and leave part way thru? Would I unfairly compare it to annual favorite (and likewise 3½ hour investment) The Ten Commandments that I had just seen two weeks earlier? Would I suffer from Chuck Heston overload? Thankfully, no on all accounts.

Ben-Hur easily earns a spot in my top five Best Pics. It's a magnificent, thrilling and at times spiritually moving event. It's another one of those movies you don't pick apart critically, although one major reviewer called it "pokey" at times, whatever that means. It's a cinematic right of passage that every serious moviegoer should experience, or anyone looking for a majestic trip back to that time people talk about when "they made them like that."

Of all the revivals I've seen in the last 18 months or so, this had the largest turnout. Parents brought children (who were remarakbly well-behaved), there was random applause and enthusiastic discussions afterwards. THIS is why we go to the movies. 10/10

Working my way through the Harry Potter series over the bank holiday, seen the first six over the last few days and today is the turn of Deathly Hallows parts 1 & 2.

Pretty good entertainment for kids and those of us who haven't grown up yet, nothing too challenging.

One of my favourite fast moving nonsensical films

Hell I even liked the versions I saw on telly where the swear words were cringingly changed to things like "Mutha`humper" . Which to me actually sounds more graphic, kinda

Currently watching,

This

Must admit I liked it even better than the first one.

Everyone is terrific in this and if only certain fights scenes could have been slowed a little, it`d be a near perfect film.

Ok I say everyone was terrific, and yeah Samuel F Jackson is alright, but as far as I'm concerned he`s no damn Nick Fury !!!.

Kurt (Snake) Russell (Sheesh when`s the last time he was in a movie ?) would have been great in the unyielding role, actually Bruce Boxleitner might have been out of left field superb and ideal now I come to think about it .

Least they sort of introduced Falcon.
Something I was very pleased to see

Great there was more of the Black Widow also.

All in all a surprisingly well executed enjoyable sequel

I just got out a early screening of Godzilla. I thought it was did homage to the older films as well as the original while appealing to modern audiences.

I recommend it.

Default Grand Prix (1966)

I'm home sick today, so I decided to spend all day watching movies and reading books. First up, the Blu-ray version of one that I remember seeing in Cinerama when it first came out. The visuals and sound on this almost overwhelmed me, hadn't seen anything remotely like it. Couldn't find an image of the back cover, so here is the 2-disc DVD one instead:

The plot isn't any great shakes, but as a teen it was more than enough for me. The extras on the DVD and Blu-ray seem to be the same - they are top-notch ones, really liked the behind the scenes story on how the great race footage came to be shot.

After seeing one of the extras that mentioned a few of the real drivers who appeared in the movie, I checked the grid for the first race (at Monaco.) Of the 16 drivers that started, 8 of them would be dead from crashes: Clark, Bandini, McLaren, Rindt, Bonner, Siffert, Spence, and Anderson. And Graham Hill would die in a small plane crash with most of his racing team. The winner of the race, Jackie Stewart, would be instrumental in getting safer racing conditions.

Of the actors, Garner was by far the best, with Montand being second-best, according to the extras. The one who didn't do any of his own driving? That would be Brian Bedford.
