I'm working my way through vol:6 of The Bill at the moment and, boy, every episode seems to have a mid-1980's MILF in it. The number of sexy older women is ridiculous. One episode had the death of a travelling salesman who turned out to have been bigamously married several times. Two of his wives were played by Debbi Blythe and Kirstie Pooley. Three discs still to go.

Dwight "Bucky" Bleichert (Josh Hartnett) and Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart) are two former boxers turned LAPD cops who cross paths during the Zoot Suit Riots in 1943. Confident of his talents and "juice" with the high brass, Blanchard tells Bleichert that he's up for a rapid promotion and that he'll make sergeant in just a few years. It comes as he predicted and Sgt. Blanchard is working with the Warrants Division. In 1946, Bleichert and Blanchard are talked into a publicity fight by the LAPD top brass and aspiring DA Ellis Loew (Patrick Fischer) in order to gain public approval for a bond measure that would provide the police with a bigger budget and a 8% pay rise for every man on the force. The publicity stunt is successful and both boxing cops are celebrated as heroes. After the fight, Blanchard asks Bleichert to become his partner in Warrants. On January 15, 1947, the mutilated body of a young woman is discovered in an abandoned lot. Despite being outside their bailiwick, Blanchard and Bleichert join the investigation and are gradually consumed by it.

Brian De Palma's disastrous attempt to put James Ellroy's novel on screen is a failure in almost every aspect. Not even Vilmos Zsigmond's halfway decent cinematography succeeds in making this trainwreck of a picture watchable. I was familiar with the film's reputation but wanted to see for myself now that I've finished the book a couple days ago. The directing is awful, the dialogues even worse and the acting makes you want to gouge your eyes out. Having seen more than thousand films in my miserable life, I can't recall even one with so many miscast actors to share the same screen. Hillary Swank is a disgrace to the book version of her role, Aaron Eckhart looks like he learned acting in a shower and there's Mike Starr who plays Russ Millard, a central character in the novel. Millard is a thinking detective with character while Mike Starr acts like he's having a crap throughout his screen time. A guy who spent most of his career portraying thugs and generally tough guys is obviously not your first choice as someone with brain power. It obviously was Mr. De Palma and the mock and ridicule he had to face was well-deserved.

Chris Smith (Emile Hirsch) is a trailer-park-dwelling dope dealer from Dallas, Texas. One night he runs to his father Ansel (Thomas Haden Church), your typical hick retard, asking him for some money to pay off a debt because his mother Adele stole his drug money and spent it all on her car. Chris is given an ultimatum by his dealer, the local drug lord Digger Soames (Marc Macaulay), otherwise it's the Big Adios. The only way out seems to be his mother's life insurance money, amounting to $50,000, of which Chris' younger sister Dottie (Juno Temple) is the sole beneficiary. Of course, to get their paws on the cash, they'll have to put Adele to sleep and the man they hire for the job is Joe Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a detective with the Dallas Police Department moonlighting as a contract killer. But things don't go as planned...

In 2011, William Friedkin suddenly remembered that he used to be a director, so he decided to shoot another film in case he might croak soon. Killer Joe may not be much of a choice for a title but it really offers a nice crime story with good performances. The ending could have been better but it's nothing to make you feel disappointed.
