porn collection (discussion thread)
Does any one else find that you download loads of files but actually never revisit them? Conversely, I usually look at new stuff but once ive seen it, i tend not to look again.
Does any one else suffer/ fall victim to this gig eating phenomenon?? |

I used to download a lot. When I hit enough gigs to move it to a DVD I did and then would delete it from my computer. Now a days I download very little. Trailers for DVDs/Blurays I own or are on my wish list. Pics of actresses to add to a movie database I have so I know what they look like when I play the film and don't have to spend hours figuring it out. Other than that I am here mostly for the conversation.

I've long accepted that I'm more of a collector than anything: thousands of books, cds, mp3s, records, tapes, films (of all types) that I'll never read/watch/listen to, or even have time to (especially as I usually prefer to re-read/watch things).
So I'll never watch most of the stuff I've got from here, but I am still pleased to have it in case I want to watch it (or watch it again). And I enjoy cataloguing it all as well (a relatively recent enthusiasm).

Yep, definitely! I have recently had a clear-out. I couldn't believe how many duplicates I had. I've got it down from nearly 150 discs (CDs) to twelve DVDs.
Not just the collecting, it's the amount of time it takes. |

With collecting though, the time it takes is the point.
With a lot of collectable things - antiques, stamps etc - there's pretty much nothing you can do with them beyond cataloguing, but people still do it. Admittedly there's a financial thing there as well, but I doubt that's why many people start. Porn has as much Meta interest as any other collectable: and it is forums like this (actually, pretty much just this forum) that bring this type of interest to the fore: the history, the culture, the stories about individual films and performers, etc. So where pottery collectors talk of John Doulton, we talk of Lasse Braun (and some of us do both: Doulton's factory was about half a mile from where I live, and tiles made there line at least one corridor of the nearest hospital: so I'm interested because of that). I think Braun's early films have an interest which is far beyond the films themselves, which frankly can be hard to watch: but the fact that he was making them at all is amazing, isn't it? So it is worth having them just for that. Sorry to have gone on, but this - the history and culture of porn, as well as the porn itself - is something that I think is worth preserving: no, more than that: it is necessary. If you don't understand a culture's porn, then you have no hope of understanding the culture itself.

I think that with porn, I'm always looking for something new. Once I've seen the film (or loop) a couple of times, I want a fresh 'fix'. I do keep what I have and go back to it after a while though but it can be a long while.
(Edit) This does depend on how 'hot' I find the porn in question. If it's a corker, I'll watch it frequently but if it's just run of the mill stuff (same old same old) I'll watch it once and maybe not again for ages and might even delete it if it's very mundane. |

I realize that the whole thing is largely pathological with me. I fill up disc after disk and only revisit a few, but deleting is usually almost painful! I have a feeling that by having the vid files, I kind of "own" these women and cannot bear to part with any of them!

I guess collecting porn is like collecting everything else -- it becomes an obsession.

Some interesting stuff here. I find indexing a problem because I've let the collection build to such a size that I don't know where to start. I may need some help!
