You can buy cans of compressed air. Get one and clean your machine. Even if that isn't the reason, it won't be wasted money. The experience will teach you something

Take the cover off the machine, and see if of ALL the fans work when you boot. Sometimes they fail, but replacements are cheap (from ca. $10) and you can instal them yourself. Instructions are available on youtube

Intermittent problems are hard to diagnose. If the above does not work, all you can do is switch out part for part (RAM, graphic card etc) and see what does work

If none of the above works longterm, you may have a screwed motherboard, as someone noted above. Your best bet is to give the machine to a specialist, pay his fee, and be prepared to get a new machine
All good advice, but there comes a point of diminishing returns when you invest in replacing so much of the machine that the cost becomes much higher than the value of the system itself. Plus, if the machine is much older, the ability to run modern operating systems becomes less viable. Yes, there are small linux distros too but at that point you may want to cut your losses and bin it if the PC is really old.

Oh, and don't ever put those tower PCs in those enclosed cabinet style desks. I've seen far too many of these die from heat exhaustion because there is no ventilation.

Oh, and don't ever put those tower PCs in those enclosed cabinet style desks. I've seen far too many of these die from heat exhaustion because there is no ventilation.

When things began going wrong with my computer, I hung in there and endured
the constant crashing for months on end, until I simply couldn't stand it any
more. I'd installed a few things over the years.......memory, rom drives, etc etc. .........
but I'd never once thought of actually building a computer from scratch. The first thing
I replaced on my Win 7 HP, was the graphics card. I just knew that was the problem,
with the overheating. The fan on my old card had gone kaput. Using a free program
called "Speccy", that basically is a thermometer, for individual parts of your computer,
I could see that my new graphics card, was well within acceptable ranges at 33 C. My
CPU however, was boiling hot, and getting hotter the longer I looked at it, till it shut down
at over 100 friggin degrees C..........hot enough in other words to boil water! To keep a
story I meant to be shorter, from getting any longer, I ended up salvaging parts from
my hot box computer, as well as anything usable from 2 others that had died over the
years and had not made it to the trash dumpster.........bought a new motherboard, power
supply, and blu ray disc burner, along with a wicked lookin' case to go along with the fancy
graphics card I'd bought previously........and for well under $400 dollars, I feel like I've
got the baddest ass computer on the planet. Sure as hell the best one I've ever had before
I know that. Even found a hacked version of Win 7 Ultimate to install in it. It basically
maxes out all of the test scores on the tests I've run on it, so I couldn't be any happier
about the end results.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is, you can damn sure build your dream computer,
MUCH cheaper than you could ever go out and pay retail for one at any store.

p.s.
I tried Win 10, and couldn't get rid of it fast enough.

Hasn't cost me any money to repair it so far so I'm happy. If it starts needing new parts then I will scrap it.
