Scottish Gaelic makes me laugh - it doesn't have word for anything invented after the 15th century so you get sentences like "Cuir a-steach am carburettor facal a th spark plugs a thu a' lorg?
well that is just lazy even in the 15th century the Scottish must have had a word for spark and a word for plug so why not at least try and use them together.

However lest we forget the "english" word television is actually made up from 2 ancient languages greek and latin tele meaning remote or distance and vision meaning seeing as well as telephone, telegraph etc. We also have a large "shudder" french influence words such as beef, rest, mutton etc that is what makes us Brit ish asin brit with a lot of other bits and pieces thrown in churned over and then tipped out on the groound and the bits all put back together again in no particular order.

In actual fact, "these islands" (or "these isles") is a specific term in it's own right, and is used in all documents jointly drawn up by the British and Irish governments, as the use of the term "British Isles" is considered by some to be inappropriate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British...naming_dispute

If it's clear that the term "British Isles" causes offence, I don't see the point in trying to justify it's use.

The Great was added after the inclusion of Scotland, it just means "greater" which is geographical term, The London metropolitan area is known as "Greater London"....its not a statement of how amazing someone or something is

The correct geographical term is Atlantic Archipelago. Not British Isles. The only people who call it British Isles are the British.

Noticed this online. Not much to say but "now then, now then, as it 'appens!"

It's not true, BB - that term is used in weather reports all over the world, including in other languages

Of course, not everyone talks like a meteorologist
