Need some details on that to help.

What kind of system? What kind of error? Do you have Java installed?

Generally, to keep things simple, do NOT check "browser integration" as you do the install.

Windows 10 has a setting that by default it allows software installation only from Microsoft store. You can change that from Windows settings in Software or Applications section (Don't know the exact English word as my Windows is not English)

By the way, I tried to download images from a post from Pimp and host with Jdownloader2, since Imgding did not work (downloaded only some garbage, not the images), but it created a bunch of directories, so I canceled the download. I guess Imgding does not handle the current behavior of Pimp and host anymore, there's the annoying waiting period. Even manual downloading of images is just a nightmare from there now.

I'm pretty sure that if you go into Settings > Packagizer, and uncheck the top box Create Subfolder by Package Name , that's how to stop that happening

XP sp3, lol. I knew success would be less than likely, and even if it did install I wasn't really expecting it to work with MyPal (which is based on an old version of firefox), so I'm not really bothered.

Thanks for the offer of help, though.

So, skip the "browser integration" when you try to install, just see if it installs as a standalone application. Because its a Java application, if you've got Java installed, then it should run fine.

That's the thing about Java -- its encapsulated.

When you ask it for "browser integration" --then its trying to find a hook for the browser and if its something old or unusual, it may not mind one.

Oh, there's a BIG gotcha in the install process. There's something really bad going on with a deceptive ad that gets placed on the JD download page. that's not what you want to use, see this screenshot

for which the correct page is

Code:
https://jdownloader.org/download/index
-- I have never understood why JDownloader allows this -- what seems to be happening is that a third party is posting garbage via Doubleclick advertising portal. Whatever the case, its a real gotcha

JD is such a fantastic tool and its totally free! They get money with this stuff. The support is totally open about this and recommend the Adware free installer all the time. Everyone can read and everyone is responsible for their own PC, mobile phone or tablet. I have no problem with this and hope JD will be free in the future too. Everyone who clicks on something without having a clue about it should better cut the internet connection.

I support and use JDownloader, but the problem with a misleading adware ad -- that's a really big one.

This is a huge gotcha -- where you _think_ that you're installing JDownloader, but instead there's ad placed on their download page which directs you to install something which is NOT JDownloader.

That is really bad.

. . . and its why a lot of people have trouble installing JD . . . because they get to the page, and instead get hijacked by an ad to someplace else to install something else. This has been a problem for a very long time with JDownloader.

I have no problem with them making money with advertising, but I do have a problem with them permitting ads on their download page which direct people to third party software with adware. That's definitely a big "No" . . . and its likely why a lot of folks have trouble installing this very useful program -- because when you get to the page, its actually much easier to run into the adware than than it is to find the installer . . . as you can see from the user experience noted above

deepsepia, I've just tried to find out which Java I've got by looking through "Windows" on my hard drive, and though I have a folder labelled "Java", with two folders in it, one called "classes" the other called "trustlib", they are both empty.

I think I downloaded from the green button that you told us not to, which I did because I had no idea which version to download from the list. I'm presuming the fact that I don't seem to have java was why the adware stuff you mentioned couldn't install.
