On my thirteenth birthday in 1973 my mum bought me my first stereo record player. It was an Elizabethan and was on sale in Walworths for £25 - quite a bit of dosh back then. The first record I bought to play on it was the newly released 'Pin Ups' album by David Bowie. The noise that emerged from the speakers like a waking beast filled me with a sense of profound exhilaration. In the days and weeks that followed my bedroom echoed to the sound of 'Sorrow' and 'Here Comes The Night'.
On my fourteenth birthday mum bought me a pair of Koss headphones. In those days Koss were arguably the best brand on the market, so they must have set her back quite a bit. The first record I chose to listen to through my new 'cans' was ..... you guessed it: 'Pin Ups'. As the music poured into my head I began to relive those same feelings from a year earlier all over again. To this day 'Pin Ups 'is still one of my favourite albums and remains, in my humble opinion, the best album of cover songs ever made. |

The Byrds - Mr Tambourine Man. We were allowed to listen to pirate radio whilst revising for exams. Takes me back to sitting by the window in the classroom.

1st record
Okay, I'll be the honest one here - mine was the "Mary Poppins" soundtrack (hey, I was 6 years old, okay? I wanted to dance to "Step in Time" like Dick van Dyck).
Now the first album I bought myself and paid for out of my own pocket with my own very own moolah was Abbey Road - The Beatles |

First record was School's Out by Alice Cooper. Still remember the excitement of seeing him on Top of the Pops!

First Record
Best of the Beach Boys LP, bought in 1969 in Woolworths, Erith, Kent. I was 5 years old so I was with my Mum. Still have it, along with all their other material and a lot of progressive rock, so yes, I am a bona fida old git.
