Default 2017/18 NCAA Basketball (Season & Scandal)

Wow! With the arrests and subsequent revelations over the last couple of days it looks like this season is up in the air. For those of you who haven't followed what has gone on the last couple of days here is a link to a cbs sports article:

https://www.cbssports.com/college-ba...years-to-come/

I believe the four programs that had assistant coaches arrested will face NCAA sanctions before the start of March Madness I am a UCLA fan and it just breaks my heart to see Ari$ona & U$C having been implicated. With that said I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg and many more schools, coachs, AAU coachs, sports agents, and sports apparel employees will implicated if not charged with crimes before this is over. I just hope UCLA is not one of them.

UCLA has an interesting class of freshmen to go with a few key returning players from last years team that went 31-5. With what we lost (We lost a lot) the success of this years team will depend largely on 2 key Freshmen, PG Jaylen Hands and wing Chris Wilkes. I expect they will contribute from the start and the remainder of the freshmen also show great promise including 2 6'10" forwards, a 6'9" guard, and 6'5" wing/scoring guard LiAngello Ball (Lonzo Ball's brother). This year looks to be an other exciting one which hopefully will see them getting past the sweet 16 for the first time in Coach Steve Alford's career.

Now 2018 is another question. As of now the recruiting class consists of just 1 four star guard and the entire season could depend on how many of this years team returns. With the emerging scandal there may be players decommitting or transferring so I am probably getting ahead of myself. Lets see what happens this year.

Once again, the key to this investigation is the same as always.... follow the money.

Louisville head coach Rick Pitino and athletic director Tom Jurich placed on unpaid administrative leave.

It's about friggin' time. That whole thing with the strippers/whores was disgusting. There is no way that Pitino and, probably, Jurich did not know about it.

I agree about Pitino. This is going to keep growing it is going to take down a lot more coachs. As a Bruin fan I have no love for Ari$ona. They have consistently brought in top recruiting class after another including owning Southern California. Now one of his assistants get arrested in this growing scandal. Makes me wonder how long Mr Flop Sweat Millers got?

Pitino's lawyers have issued a statement that he is innocent and will be vindicated.

Really, this whole thing with the shoe companies, AAU teams, coyotes, financial advisors, and agents was a disaster waiting to happen. Through all of it, it is the players who get shafted. Of course, many of them were broke in the first place and aren't really NBA level talents. Plus, the NCAA and schools are only too glad to grub around.

Yet another illustration of the need to breed a better grade of human being.

I am sure that the FBI has done just that. This is a 2 year long investigation and they have only announced 10 arrests. Standard FBI practice in cases like this is to go after the small fish and turn them against bigger fish. Where this has the potential to explode is with the sports apparel people. If they broke the law by bribing players to attend the 4 schools that had assistant coaches arrested you can be damn sure they were making the same deals a large number of other school.

Adidas is the company involved with the bribery. UCLA used to be an Adidas school and they were still with Adidas when they landed 2 of the best classes they have had in a long time. The class with Kyle Anderson and Shabazz Mohamed and last years class with Lonzo and TJ leaf. Again I hope UCLA is not implicated but I guess only time will tell.

This is far from new. Nike was involved in a similar, although smaller in scope, scandal a few years back. I have always wondered how Oregon, Phil Knights alma matter, a mid tier Pac 12 football & Basketball team became a national power, in both sports, in a relatively short time. Hum Seriously I drove around Eugene once it is a small sleepy town with a college. Without the college it would be the kind of place older people from Los Angeles would move to to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, not the kind of place an 18 year old 5 star high school recruit with multiple scholarship offers would choose. Besides College parties there did seem to be a whole lot to do there.

Thanks to tsunamiSD for the links I have been trying read as much as I can and to of your three links I hadn't seen yet.

In many ways, college basketball--at least to me, is more corrupt than football (point shaving, shoe deals, fan payoffs). This is more validation of that.

Default Two updated pre-season rankings & 2 SDSU articles

Not a lot of change here, though I'm surprised at how high USC is, considering that their assistant coach (and 2 players?) are part of the scandal.

Bleacher Report Top 25

How They Play

****
Mark Zeigler on tonight's exhibition against division II UCSD Tritons. The last sentence of the quote I've listed gives another reason why the #10 ranking for the Trojans might be suspect.
Fans get first peek at Aztecs

Quote:
UC San Diego basketball coach Eric Olen has closely followed the progress of San Diego State and new head coach Brian Dutcher because his Tritons plays the Aztecs on Thursday night in an exhibition game at Viejas Arena. And also because he can relate.
He, too, was a long-time assistant who moved 18 inches into the next chair on the bench and wondered, suddenly, what do I do now?
“It’s not like you want to re-invent things and be like, oh, now we have to start all this over from scratch,” said Olen, an assistant coach for nine years under Chris Carlson before taking over in 2013. “You’ve got to bring your own personality to it. You have to be yourself, be true to yourself. But you don’t have to change everything.
“That’s been my approach.”
It worked for Olen – the Tritons won 24 and 27 games in the last two seasons and reached the Division II NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 twice, statistically the two best years in program history. And the early indications for Dutcher, who adopted a similar don’t-reinvent-the-wheel strategy, are that it’s working for him, too.
Infuse your personality and energy. Make a few tactical tweaks. Keep most things the same.
Ask USC, which is No. 10 in the Associated Press preseason rankings and lost 98-76 at home against the Aztecs in closed-door scrimmage Saturday.
Do any of your local college basketball teams that play home games on campus allow the sale of alcohol?

SDSU basketball games to include alcohol sales

Quote:
For years, you could purchase alcohol during concerts at Viejas Arena but not at basketball games due to a 2005 California State University ban for on-campus sporting events. That was lifted over the summer, and SDSU officials have spent the last few months formulating what athletic director John David Wicker calls “an appropriate policy” for basketball games.
The policy: You must get a separate ID check first, you can buy only two beers at a time, and sales will be cut off at the start of the second half.
