Default Sharks:Protect them or kill them?

It is Shark Week on the Discovery Channel here in the US. It brought this thought to me. Should sharks be protected or killed? I hate finners, it is so barbaric a practice. As another poster in another thread said if I were dictator of the world I would not only outlaw finning but authorize the sinking of any vessels caught doing it. Now I am NOT a member of PETA (well in a way I am, People Eating Tasty Animals) and I do not see anything wrong with responsible harvesting or hunting of fish and wildlife. I just think that what drives the slaughter of sharks, tigers, rhinos, elephants, etc. is just out right wrong. The market is driven in many cases by ancient medical myths and practices that the ignorant and illiterate peoples of some countries still insist is valid. WRONG!!

Protect. Predators are just as important to an ecosystem as prey and flora.

As for finning, I view it as being as bad as killing rhinos to grind their horns into aphrodisiacs and similar superstitious practices. The problem is stopping it is like stopping religion, the people doing it can't listen to facts or accept the reality that they don't have those properties.

Guess that makes us both members

I haven't watch much of the Shark week thing. Kinda like it but sometimes it's over kill. But I do kinda like the, somewhat new found tradition. Caught a clip of some hunters trying to keep Surfside Beach clear of them. Made me think of how many people have died from backpacking over shark attacks.

Yeah the finning and Rhino stuff bugs me as well. If the meat was used, sure. But I hate the waste.

Years back a friend swore that the movie Jaws (1975) was the best movie ever. I think I still have to agree with him. Downloaded a good copy some months back and still love it. I remember how it made me think before going into the "Lake"

As I mentioned in another thread, I have been interested in sharks for many years. They are awesome creatures. To my mind they should be protected, and the practice of finning globally banned. All too often they do not even kill the shark, merely hack off its fins and throw it back overboard to drown.

These poor creatures get such a bad press, and far too many people just want to kill them on sight. As BLS said, more people are killed while out fell walking or canoing than are ever killed by sharks.

Here where I live we have wolves, bears and lynx. Sadly all too many people want to hunt them to extinction here, just shoot them on sight. Not that many people here have ever actually seen a wolf or a bear, so they are not a problem, but they still want to kill them anyway.

Sharks have their place and should be protected.

I think all such forms of life (With certain exceptions as can't stand damn blue bottles, oh or Zionists) should be given their due and treated with live and let live respect.
So yes I`d protect the sharks from "Hunters" if I could
Would also help even the odds for those despicable hunters who managed to get close to a shark with evil intent .

By arming our toothy brothers to make it a fairer fight

Sharks were around long before humans and we encroach into their domain. I don't see many sharks encroaching on ours so leave them alone, they have a right to live like any other creature and all these silly films about tornadoes and two-headed sharks just don't help their cause. As Richard Dreyfuss observes in Jaws "they eat, swim and make little sharks" so like humans they do what they're born to do. If some idiot swims near one, or enters their domain, they will obviously attack-with teeth like that what else do you expect them to do. Scientists are learning more about them but if we leave them alone, they will thrive and we can understand more. Personally I am fascinated by them and they are magnificent creatures.

Jaws was a double-edged sword. It created (or reinforced) the nasty reputation of sharks, but a lot of people were intrigued by them and began to study them. In the almost 40 years since the release of the movie, I'd say that many of the scientists who appear on Shark Week were inspired by the movie.

As Greenman said, we encroach on the shark's domain. You go into someone's residence without permission, you may suffer the consequences. Now, if a shark comes to my door saying he has a candygram, well then, all bets are off.

No contest, they should be protected and those scumbags that catch them and cut off their fins and throw the still living sharks back to die should be beaten to a pulp with a baseball bat.

Personally-I prefer to see them tied securely together in groups of two or three, numerous minor wounds inflicted to ensure they bleed profusely and then thrown overboard. Natural-and appropriate justice- inflicted by the victims' relatives....

...mind you Dr Pepper prescribes identical treatment for Somali pirates....
